Chapter 116: Have You Fallen in Love with Him?
After finishing his shift in the morning, Gao Chuan dragged his exhausted body back home. He had been working non-stop for two days and thought Jiang An had left for work early as she was not at home, so without giving it much thought, he went straight to their bedroom to sleep.
The man slept until the afternoon and woke up to a message sent from Switzerland. It mentioned some issues at the laboratory and consulted him on related questions.
After coming to his senses, Gao Chuan walked into the study and began dealing with the laboratory situation, busy until the evening. Jiang An had not returned home yet. He glanced at the time and realized it was Thursday, guessing she might be on duty at the hospital. Thinking they hadn’t seen each other since the morning two days ago, he couldn’t help but feel concerned.
These past few days he had been busy, without any chance to talk to Jiang An, wondering if she was still upset with him.
It was only when he went to work the next day that Gao Chuan learned Jiang An was sick and had taken leave. A young nurse he met during ward rounds informed him that Jiang An was staying in City Hospital due to catching a cold.
She had been absent for an entire day and even had her monthly perfect attendance deducted.
Upon hearing this, the man’s heart stirred slightly, and his bushy eyebrows knitted together, though he continued to inquire about the patient’s condition with calm.
After leaving the ward, he stopped the young nurse heading in the opposite direction. The nurse turned around, puzzled to see Gao Chuan, who rarely spoke to her, with a somewhat distracted look in his eyes, asked indifferently, "How is Dr. Jiang?"
Unsurprisingly, Dr. Gao inquired about Jiang An, and the young nurse showed a hint of astonishment, fearfully thinking that Jiang An’s absence the previous day had drawn Dr. Gao’s attention, and quickly attempted to cover for Jiang An: "She’s very sick, seriously ill. I heard she had a high fever that wouldn’t subside, and she was home alone which delayed her request for leave."
The nurse repeatedly emphasized how seriously ill Jiang An was, hoping to evoke sympathy from Gao Chuan as a leader.
Listening to the nurse’s anxious tone, the man lowered his eyes and said softly, "Alright, I understand," and then turned and walked away toward his office.
He didn’t know when Jiang An got feverish or who took her to the hospital.
Looking back at his chat history with Jiang An, the messages he sent last night were still unanswered. The man couldn’t help but feel anxious and went downstairs to the inpatient department after finishing his work.
Jiang An was prone to catching a cold when the weather changed, and it had been snowing for two days. It was only this morning that her fever barely subsided, and perhaps due to long exposure to the cold in the old house, she began coughing again.
Wei Yan came over with breakfast just after she woke up knowing Jiang An wasn’t feeling well and had no appetite, so he brought over a simple vegetable porridge and some snacks to nourish her. Gao Chuan brought a pillow to support Jiang An’s back while the girl sat upright, slowly sipping the porridge spoon by spoon.
The porridge tasted bland and dry, and the food felt unappetizing.
She was aware of her condition whenever she fell sick; it might take a few days to recover this time. The girl tried a bite of the breakfast Wei Yan had brought and found him looking at her from a chair. She spoke faintly, "Brother Wei Yan, please go back and rest. I’ll be fine here by myself."
Wei Yan didn’t respond to her words, his mind full of the confessions Jiang An made to him during the night.
As he suspected, Jiang An’s quick marriage indeed had issues.
Yet, he hadn’t expected such a straightforward reason—it was merely because Gao Chuan had extended help during her difficult times, and to repay the favor, she agreed to the man’s unreasonable request.
So, even though they were married without love, does that man simply disregard Jiang An?
Wei Yan felt depressed inside. Last night, Jiang An was too weak for them to have a proper conversation. Now that she was awake, he finally spoke his mind.
"Anan, you don’t need to go this far, divorce him." Wei Yan advised calmly, his voice filled with tenderness and patience.
Even though Gao Chuan had once helped her through tough times, she shouldn’t sacrifice her own happiness to repay this kindness.
Jiang An heard the man’s words, and her hand holding the spoon paused, remaining silent for a moment.
Wei Yan knew Jiang An had a soft heart. He tried to suppress the anger inside him and said earnestly to the girl staring blankly on the bed, "Jiang An, do you know what marriage means to a woman?"
Jiang An maintained a wooden expression, her thin lips pressed into a line.
Yes, she certainly knew what marriage meant to a woman.
But still, she chose to marry Dr. Gao without hesitation – for that timely favor during hardship, for that insignificant flicker of affection in her heart.
She thought that as long as she did well enough, she could surely win over the man’s heart and make this nominal marriage real.
Yet now, she realized it was all wishful thinking.
It turned out that what bound them together was nothing but responsibility.
"I understand, Brother Wei Yan, I will think about it," said Jiang An, her eyes showing a thin layer of sorrow, her crescent-like eyebrows reflecting a hint of melancholy.
Wei Yan felt a lump in his throat watching the girl meekly answer his question, he had once believed in their marriage and thought of stepping back.
Now, knowing the truth from Jiang An’s mouth, he suddenly felt ashamed to speak up; he feared losing even the chance to remain friends with her.
After a long while, the man’s faint voice echoed in the room again, startling the girl.
Wei Yan asked her, "Did you fall in love with that man?"
As soon as he finished speaking, silence filled the air.
Jiang An bowed her head quietly, her gaze on the spoon filled with vegetable porridge, her lips tightly sealed, not uttering a word.
The man’s eyes rested on the girl’s dim expression, he slowly stood up from the chair, a trace of desolation flashing in his eyes, and said softly, "Alright, I understand."
"Rest well, I’ll return to the office and come back this afternoon." After saying that, he turned around and left the ward.
The ordinary ward was filled with the strong smell of disinfectant. The man in the corridor, silently watching the speaking man and woman inside, stared heavily for a few seconds before turning expressionlessly and going back upstairs.
The flame in his heart gradually rising, Gao Chuan silently clenched his fist, the veins on his hand bulging.
So, it was Wei Yan who brought Jiang An to the hospital? So, it was him who stayed with Jiang An throughout the night? The man sat on the chair, his thoughts turbulent, a cold light radiating from his pale black eyes.
