Chapter 116 - 115 I Forgot My Dad’s Death Anniversary

Chapter 116: Chapter 115 I Forgot My Dad’s Death Anniversary

After getting drunk, Jiang An cried and refused to go home. Wanwan supported the unsteady girl, listening to her softly murmuring in her embrace, "That place is not my home..."

From the groggy Jiang An, Wanwan heard her muttering another address. The woman steadied her into the back of the car, navigated to an old residential building.

The sky had completely darkened, several street lights beside the road were broken, dimly illuminating the path barely. Somewhere along the way, it had started snowing, the snowflakes danced outside the car window like willow catkins in spring.

Wanwan woke up the passed-out Jiang An to ask for the apartment number. Upon getting the number despite her hesitance, she supported her up the stairs, took out keys from Jiang An’s bag, and opened the door to be greeted by a cloud of dust.

Though neatly arranged, the room clearly hadn’t been lived in for quite some time. Wanwan felt for the switch on the wall, and the dim light suddenly lit up.

This must have been Jiang An’s former residence, the woman guessed.

She led Jiang An to a bedroom inside, and just as she was removing the drunken girl’s shoes, she received a call from the agent. She had temporarily left the film crew and needed to rush back for night scenes. She got up, covered Jiang An with a blanket, took one last look at the girl still looking sad in bed, and then turned to leave.

Wanwan got back into the car, found Gao Chuan’s number on her phone but hesitated when she suddenly recalled what Jiang An had drunkenly told her.

"Don’t want to go home."

"Dr. Gao hates it when I drink."

"He will hate me."

She wasn’t aware of the complications between the two, but even today she could sense the grievance and sadness in Jiang An’s words. Her finger hovered over the phone screen but ultimately did not make the call.

Jiang An came down with a fever, the events of the night.

Due to the prolonged vacancy, the heating was off, and the girl curled up under the blanket in the cold room, her whole body shivering uncontrollably, hands and feet ice-cold.

Outside, the snow still did not stop, the cold wind howled, and the immaculate snowflakes fluttered in the air, while a man, busy until late at the hospital, had fallen asleep at his desk.

That night, Jiang An had a very long dream.

In the dream, she hadn’t followed Fang Qing to Jing City, her father hadn’t died on duty, there was no endless snow, just the bird-and-flower filled hometown.

She was still the little girl who lived by the sea and loved to laugh.

It had been a long time since she had such a happy dream that she didn’t want to wake up, despite her burning forehead.

Jiang An stayed unconscious until the next afternoon, the ringing of her phone beside the pillow woke her, her eyes slowly opened, her consciousness still blurred, her head dizzy, and her body feeling utterly weak.

Jiang An weakly pressed the answer button, Wei Yan’s voice came through the cold current into her ears, bringing her to full awareness.

Wei Yan asked where she was now.

Asked why she hadn’t picked up despite multiple calls.

Asked if something had happened.

Jiang An lay in bed listening to the man’s anxious voice on the phone, her face pale, her lips colorless and moving slightly: "I’m at Mom’s place."

For a moment, Jiang An even felt that only in this small house could she feel she wasn’t completely alone.

Wei Yan, hearing her hoarse voice and sensing her low spirits sighed silently, "Anan, don’t be sad, next year I’ll go with you to visit Uncle."

Yesterday was the memorial day of Jiang An’s father. Wei Yan had remembered it from the time he stayed at Fang Qing’s house. Although Fang Qing and Jiang An seldom talked about that man, living together for a long time, they somewhat understood the situation.

Jiang An’s father was a meritorious sailor who died in the line of duty during a navigation mission, and at that time, Jiang An was only six years old.

Listening to Wei Yan’s heavy words over the phone, Jiang An was stunned, and then she flipped through the calendar on her phone, January 29th, the tenth day of the last lunar month.

Yesterday was her father’s memorial day, the girl suddenly realized, her light brown pupils instantly contracted as her body began to tremble.

Wei Yan, listening to the sudden silence on the phone, thought he had touched on Jiang An’s sorrow again, and before he could start to comfort her, he heard the girl cry out, "Brother Wei Yan,"

"I forgot my dad’s memorial day." Subsequently, the girl hysterically cried over the phone.

Wei Yan, hearing Jiang An’s feeble crying, was slightly taken aback, feeling somewhat anxious he called out, "Anan..."

No matter how the man tried to comfort her, Jiang An just kept crying non-stop.

She blamed herself for being so terrible.

By the time the man drove there, Jiang An had already fainted back onto the bed, her face burning red with fever. It was only when Wei Yan picked her up from the bed that he felt the burning heat of her body.

Looking at the feverish girl in his arms, Wei Yan’s heart clenched painfully, he couldn’t imagine how Jiang An had spent that night, couldn’t imagine the desperate condition Jiang An must have been in during their phone call.

By the time Jiang An was taken to the hospital, it was evening, and her temperature was 39.4 degrees. Due to the high fever lasting for an entire day, the already physically frail girl was even more seriously ill.

Wei Yan stayed with her as she had an IV drip, the girl lying weakly on the hospital bed still hadn’t awakened.

The man sat on the chair looking at the girl’s pale face, his expression dark, now it seemed like a luxury just to quietly watch the person in front of him.

He remembered when Jiang An was sixteen, she had a severe illness during their high school graduation exams. He recalled Fang Qing, with tears washing over her face daily, taking care of the critically ill Jiang An while arranging their college entrance exam issues.

It was said that she only gradually recovered that winter. The teacher’s wife always said Jiang An was born lucky, she helped save her father’s life at birth, and later on, she herself had survived a brush with death.

When Wei Yan went to university, Jiang An was still ill. Before he left, despite being in pain, she cheered him on, urging him to focus on his studies and not get involved in fights at university.

It seemed as if the girl’s young face was once again in front of him, and a faint smile broke on the man’s face in the silent room.

During the IV change, it seemed Jiang An was awakened by the noise. When she opened her eyes and saw Wei Yan by her bedside, she realized she had been brought to the hospital.

Wei Yan noticed she was awake and approached with concern to ask if she wanted to eat something. Jiang An weakly shook her head, the first thing she did was request Wei Yan to help her request leave from the oncology department.

She had been asleep the entire previous day, was considered absent for a day from work.

Wei Yan agreed compliantly, relieved to see her complexion had slightly improved, but anger flashed in his eyes as he quietly questioned, "Is Dr. Gao just going to watch you suffer from fever and do nothing?"

He had long wanted to ask this, thinking of Jiang An lying alone in the old house suffering from fever made him unbearably heartbroken.

If he hadn’t rushed over, would she have just been left there?

The girl he cherished, why should she suffer such wrongs?

When Jiang An heard Wei Yan’s angry question, she originally thought the fever would help her forget those unhappy incidents, but now that she was awake, the memories of that morning flooded her mind and she couldn’t help her eyes from reddening.

The girl remained silent until she heard Wei Yan speak of confronting Gao Chuan, then suddenly panicked and grabbed the man’s arm, then softly said, "Brother Wei Yan, Dr. Gao and I are just a marriage of convenience."
