Chapter 102: Chapter 101 Concerns from Ren Lin

Chapter 101 From Ren Lin’s Concern

As the internship period had already passed a week, according to the hospital’s assessment regulations, the four of them had to participate in creating three assessment reports collectively, and then the final slots would be decided by the doctors of the hospital.

Jiang An also started preparing for the first assessment content, and for her, whether she stayed or left was not very important, as gaining experience was the most crucial part for her who was just starting out.

About two weeks later, Jiang An and Ren Lin took turns being Dr. Li’s assistants in surgeries. Jiang An, who didn’t have much clinical experience before, only truly felt the exhaustion of a chief surgeon after continuously performing surgery for five hours; all the people on the operating table were risking their lives.

By the time the surgery ended, it was already noon. Jiang An, feeling somewhat numb all over, changed out of her surgical garb and silently returned to the office. The entire five-hour surgery didn’t even allow time for a restroom break, and she was drenched in sweat when she came out of the operating room.

The girl weakly leaned on her desk, thinking that Ren Lin and the others must have gone for lunch by now. Without thinking much, she closed her eyes and fell asleep.

She did not know how much time had passed when Jiang An felt someone gently tapping on her back. The girl slowly opened her bleary eyes, slightly sat up, and saw a pair of slender hands extending toward her. Soon after, Ren Lin’s gentle voice reached her ears: "Jiang An, don’t sleep yet, I’ve brought you a packed lunch from the cafeteria."

Jiang An’s stomach had already been growling for a while, as she hadn’t eaten all day due to the tiring surgery, and she hadn’t gone down to eat. At this moment, Ren Lin’s act was like sending charcoal in snowy weather. She looked at the neatly packed lunch box placed in front of her. Ren Lin was carefully opening the lid for her, and a warm current surged in her heart.

Looking down again, Ren Lin saw the girl’s eyes glistening with moisture, perhaps because she had just woken up, a few strands of hair on top of her head were sticking up, her expression foggy. The look in her eyes towards him seemed full of gratitude, and her voice was soft, directly poking one’s heart.

"Thank you so much, my savior."

Seeing Jiang An’s appreciative look, Ren Lin’s movements abruptly paused, and for some reason, his cheeks flushed red, suddenly recalling a ragdoll cat he had once raised. The look on its face when he fed it was probably similar to this.

"It’s nothing," Ren Lin said, feeling somewhat embarrassed as he scratched his head, smiling gently.

Since lunch had been delivered, Jiang An didn’t hold back anymore; she took the chopsticks from Ren Lin and began to devour her meal heartily. Seeing her favorite braised pork in the packed meal, she immediately gave Ren Lin a big thumbs up.

She must have accumulated several lifetimes of good fortune to have such a wonderful colleague, Jiang An silently thought to herself.

Watching the girl gobble down her food, Ren Lin knew she must have been starving. He also knew that Dr. Li’s surgery might last until one in the afternoon, and thinking that Jiang An might not have time to go down for lunch, he had thoughtfully packed and brought it up.

"It was just a small tumor this time, right? Why did it take so long?" Ren Lin casually took a seat at his own desk, his gaze still on Jiang An who was eating. Feeling that the office was too quiet, he opened his mouth to ask.

Jiang An, while shoveling the rice on her plate, replied, "There was a minor complication in the middle, but luckily Dr. Li managed to hold everything together. I should probably write a report based on this surgery later and show it to you!"

Ren Lin sat at his own place, picked up a black carbon pen and twirled it, listening to Jiang An talk while eating, her stammering manner somewhat comical. He silently curved the corners of his lips.

Not long after, Dr. Li, who had just finished arranging post-surgery tasks, walked over from the general ward. Seeing Jiang An savoring her meal, he feigned envy and upon learning that Ren Lin specifically brought food for Jiang An, he instantly smelled gossip and teased Ren Lin: "Well, look at you, lad. Always thinking of the ladies. Don’t you ever think about your master here?"

Although his tone was somewhat sour, his face was smiling.

Ren Lin blushed when he heard Dr. Li’s "mockery". Jiang An, who was preoccupied with eating, did not catch the hint in Dr. Li’s words, thinking instead that Dr. Li was complaining about the smell of food in the office. She naively turned to him and said: "Dr. Li, I’ll clean up as soon as I’m done eating."

"There’s no rush, take your time. We still have a bit of time before the afternoon shift." Dr. Li hadn’t finished speaking when Dr. Bai suddenly pushed the office door open, leisurely walked in with two bags in hand, and sported a smug expression, "Did somebody miss lunch?"

The three people in the office all looked up simultaneously as Dr. Bai placed the two bags on the table, taking out two steaming bowls of wontons. His eyes landed on Dr. Li and Jiang An, "Here! The meals I brought for you."

Dr. Li, who was quenching his hunger with water, almost choked, moved to tears. He stepped forward and hugged Dr. Bai tightly, enacting a deep brotherly love scene while beginning to hum softly, "Brotherly hug~"

Dr. Bai, showing a look of disgust, pushed the man off him, "Stop whining, eat up before it gets cold," then glanced back at Jiang An who was chewing her rice, the young girl watching them with an amused smile, as if watching a play.

"Jiang An, you’ve eaten, huh..." Dr. Bai tore open the packaging of the two bowls of wontons, and before he could finish his sentence, the wontons were all handed over to Dr. Li, who had already started eating them with a spoon, "Then I’ll eat both."

Dr. Bai instantly rolled his eyes, and after his gesture of goodwill, he said goodbye and left.

Walking away, the more he thought about it, the more it seemed odd. He and Gao Chuan were eating just fine in the cafeteria. When they were returning their trays, Gao Chuan suddenly brought up Dr. Li’s surgery, saying it encountered some issues. According to the attending nurses, it might be prolonged by a few hours, causing a delay for one of his minor surgeries.

The man nodded silently, deep in thought, and then asked if Dr. Li would miss lunch. Finally, he joined him in packing up two bowls of wontons to bring over.

That felt off, way too off. How had Director Gao, usually oblivious to worldly matters, suddenly become so compassionate and started aiding his subordinates?

Could it be a pang of conscience...

By this time, Gao Chuan had finished his lunch and returned to his office. Guessing that about twenty minutes had passed and Dr. Bai should have delivered the food, he opened his phone to send a WeChat message to Jiang An.

Jiang An, who had just finished her rice, was clearing the items on the table when she felt her phone vibrate. She swiped it open and saw a message from Dr. Gao.

Dr. Gao: Did you eat lunch?

Jiang An looked up at Dr. Li, who was still scooping up wontons, and simply replied.

Jiang An: Yes.
