Chapter 83: Longest Night

Chapter 83: Longest Night

The night was thick with tension, the full moon casting an eerie glow over the island. It should have been peaceful, but that night, it became a battlefield.

Alaric had perceived them the moment they arrived. The stench of werewolves fouled the air, tainting the sanctuary of the island. His crimson eyes gleamed with cold calculation as he stepped into the darkness.

Be fore leaving, he had asked Ravenna not to leave the house no matter what, but he was still worried. Considering her stubborn nature, he was afraid she would follow him, so he did not go far away.

He moved soundlessly through the dark and rather dense forest. He was barely two hundred meters from the house when the unmistakable scent of wolves intensified. He stopped, his sharp gaze scanning the darkness.

Then, from the shadows, they emerged. A dozen werewolves emerged, both shifted and unshifted, surrounded him. Their growls rumbled in the air, fangs bared, muscles coiled.

Alaric merely tilted his head. "Pathetic."

One lunged. He moved. In an instant, his hand pierced through its chest, gripping its heart. He ripped it out effortlessly, hus expression unchanged as the werewolf crumpled to the ground.

Another one leapt. He sidestepped, twisting its head with a sickening snap.

The remaining wolves hesitated. With a smirk, Alaric roared, "Next?"

Their hesitation lasted only a second before they attacked in unison. He welcomed it. His body became blur, moving with inhuman precision. Every strike was deadly, every movement efficient. Blood splattered across the forest floor, mingling with the scent of death.

But then, something changed. A new scent hit him, and his eyes sharpened. More werewolves. But that was not the problem. They were not coming for him but rather heading straight for the house.

His chest tightened. Ravenna. They were here for Ravenna.

He realized it too late. This was never about overwhelming him. It was about luring him away so they could get to her. His expression darkened. A cold fury surged through him, and suddenly, he stopped holding back.

He moved with merciless speed, tearing through the werewolves with a deadly grace. Bodies fell around him, their howls cut short as he carved a path back to the house. Then, with a final, savage blow, he broke free.

The house loomed ahead and within a minute, he was inside. His sharp gaze darted around. The scent of wolves lingered outside, but they hadn’t reached the house.

Relief was fleeting as called out. "Ravenna!"

A soft click met his ears, and he turned sharply towards the bedroom. There she was, standing at the centre of the room and a gun in her hands, her killing intent sharp and unwavering. For a moment, he simply looked her. Strong, fierce and unyielding. A deep protectiveness swelled in his chest.

"Are you okay?" He asked, stepping toward her.

She nodded with a frown. "Why are so many werewolves attacking us?"

Alaric shook his head. "I don’t know. But we need to leave. Now."

Before she could respond, he moved. He strode forward scooping her into his arms without warning. He sprang to the window and with one powerful leap, he landed effortlessly on the ground.

The moment his touch feet touched the earth, a new wave of werewolves emerged from the shadows. An army. They circled them like vultures, their eyes burning golden with malice.

Alaric’s eyes flickered dangerously and was about to attack when the little figure in his arms started protesting.

"Put me down! I can help..."

His sharp glare silenced her. He would not risk her. Not her. Not their child.

He turned to the wolves and let and let out a warning growl. The werewolves hesitated, sensing the shift inbhis aura. Some faltered, easr flattening slightly. Who wouldn’t waver when faced by the legendary Vampire King who was known for his merciless killing. It is known no one has ever gotten close to hurting him let alone killing him.

A few took a step back but did they didn’t break the formation. With a flicker of irritation, Alaric moved. He leaped onto a nearby Magnolia tree, then another and another, moving swiftly through the canopy. Ravenna clung to him, her heartbeat steady against his chest.

Behind them, the werewolves gave chase.

Alaric had never run from anyone. But tonight, Ravenna’s safety came before everything, including his pride.

After gaining distance, he jumped down, landing in a clearing. Just as he prepared to move again, something made him pause.

With narrowed ears, he looked at Ravenna. "Zander and the others are hers."

His senses heightened and in less than a minute, he moved with his fast vampire speed and came face to face with Zander and the others, along with an army of vampires standing behind them.

Alaric set Ravenna down gently, his hands briefly brushing against her arms, as he checked for any injuries. Satisfied he turned about to leave and wreak his wrath on those beasts who dared attack him in his territory.

But Ravenna grabbed his arm.

He stopped, looking at her. "What’s wrong?"

Her expression was conflicted. "I recognise some of them. They are from my pack and probably here for me."

Alaric’s eyes darkened for a moment before he cupped her cheek. "I won’t let anyone harm you."

Ravenna half smiled, nodding. "I trust you."

His expression softened before hardening again, as he turned to the army of vampires. "Stop them and make sure to capture their leader." His order was loud and clear.

With a silent nod, the vampires surged forward but Zander, Finn, Nyx, Luke, Zeke and Seth remained.

Zander glanced at Alaric blankly and said, "Only half an hour."

Alaric stiffened and his jaw clenched. Worry flickered in his eyes as he turned back to Ravenna. He cursed himself for even thinking of leaving her in his rage. This night was crucial to her as well as important than killing some goddamn wolves.

Ravenna, on the other hand, was deeply drowning in guilt. Those werewolves out there, she had once upon a time called them family. Watching them dying was not easy no matter how heartless she was.

But she knew, it was either kill or be killed.

Alaric’s voice snapped her from her thoughts. "No one gest near Ravenna until it is over. That is your only mission. Protecting her."

His tone was final as he gazed at the six people. Just as they steadied themselves, Alaric’s sharp eyes caught movement in the distance.

A group of unshifted werewolves was approaching, their steps slow and cautious. More followed behind them.

Everyone was on guard ready to launch an attack.

Then, a single word shattered the tension.

"Father."

The whisper escaped Ravenna’s lips.

Everyone froze. Alaroc turned sharply toward her, his dark eyes flickering red and golden alternatively. His fingers twitched before he held her wrist, then turned his gaze toward the group of approaching werewolves, his instincts screaming to shed blood.

Ravenna took a shaky breath, as she gripped harder on the gun around her fingers.

The air grew heavy as Alpha Derek took steps forward. Following behind him were Cade, his beta, Jaxon, the council members and a handful of guards.

With a silent command, Alpha Derek raised his hand, halting them. The tension inthe clearing was suffocating as he took steps forward, alone.

On the other hand, Alaric gently let go of Ravenna, his fingers lingering for a brief second before he met her gaze and gave her a small nod of assurance. Then, without hesitation, he stepped forward to meet the Alpha.

Their gazes clashed as they remained a bit away from each other.

"I have no intention of starting a war with the vampires," Alpha Derek stated, his voice deep and authoritative.

Alaric’s lips curled into a cold smirk, and his eyes remained devoid of amusement. "It doesn’t look that way," he said coolly, his voice laced with a quiet menace.

Alpha Derek’s expression hardened. "We will leave immediately we get what we want. Ravenna."

A low growl rumble from Alaric the moment he heard her name, his stance predatory. A few werewolves were about to step forward as though ready to strike, but Alpha Derek raised his hand once more, keeping them in place.

"You should not interfere in out matter. And right now, you’re becoming a hindrance," Alpha Derek added firmly.

"No." Alaric’s refusal to hand over Ravenna carried an undeniable finality, that if anyone dared cross him the next second, he wouldn’t hesitate to take them to hell. "If you want her, then... war is inevitable."

The council members exchanged uneasy glances. One of them, an older werewolf, hesitated before speaking, "Alpha, starting a war with the vampires would be unwise. Please reconsider." We all know what he is capable of, he wanted to add but went mum when he was shot a death glares by the Alpha.

The other council members murmured in agreement. From legends, they had heard of his ruthlessness. He was not a King for nothing and if he wished, their pack would burn down to nothing. They were just hundreds of wolves but for him, he had an entire kingdom full of bloodthirsty vampires.

Alpha Derek clenched his jaw glaring at them, before he turned to back to Alaric. "Then what do you want in exchange for her?"

Alaric almost snapped but his hand was held from behind. Ravenna stepped forward standing beside him, her expression unreadable. Yet, the tur.oil in her eyes betrayed the storm raging inside her.

Her heart pounded painfully when she met Alpha Derek’s cold gaze. It was a look she had seen all her life, one filled with indifference, as if she were nothing but a stain of his existence. Even after all this time, it still hurt.

Steadying her breath, she asked, "I have no business left with the Silver Pack. Why does the Alpha ask for me?"

Alpha Derek’s golden eyes flashed dangerously. He shot up, finger pointing at her with barely contained rage.

"No business? You owe the pack your life for killing five of our members."
