Chapter 355 - 355: Leading By Example.
There were a lot of benefits to be had by sending soldiers to attack the vampires with the support of the Kunuts, but there were also many reasons to be cautious about this approach.
The Yggdrasil civilization doesn't want too many soldiers to do this dangerous work. So they limited the number of soldiers to 10,000.
They also made it that only two star soldiers could participate in the battle. These were soldiers who had participated in an expedition before and were capable enough to be significant on the battlefield but not significant enough to cause too much loss to the army if they died.
This showed the level of sincerity of the Yggdrasil civilization in assisting the Kunuts. It was sincere enough because they could have sent the noons without stars or the one-star soldiers who barely survived an expedition.
The Yggdrasil civilization didn't send cannon fodder to die. But they also didn't send their prized troops or any soldiers from the first and second divisions. Only soldiers of the third division were allowed to participate in this dangerous work.
Actually, if the army hadn't limited the number of soldiers that would leave for this mission to 10,000, they would find it difficult to meet any quota higher than that because not many soldiers wanted to leave the base.
Only adventurous and carefree soldiers like Kelvin were willing to participate in the mission. He wasn't scared of death and even thought the mission would be fun as long as he didn't attract the attention of a demigod.
He thought to himself jokingly, "Even if I attract the attention of the demigod primordial vampire, it only means that this war will end early."
He is confident of surviving an encounter with a demigod as long as he isn't targeted specifically and as long as he doesn't walk into a trap like Icon's trap because he is dedicating the Spatial Anchor ability for escaping.
He is determined not to use the Spatial Anchor ability for anything apart from returning to the base. He has already placed a spatial anchor at the base that he will use to escape when needed.
So as long as he has other soldiers to bear the wrath of a demigod together with, he is confident of using those soldiers as decoys while he runs for his life.
This confidence meant that he didn't care what army of the Kunuts he was assigned to. He didn't care if he was assigned to cannon fodder because no matter what army he was assigned to, they would always be cannon fodder meant to distract a demigod for him.
The Kunuts don't usually have an army because they don't have soldiers. They don't need to fight because they have wayfarers for attack and defense. Most of their population are farmers and workers.
99% of the population of Kunuts are the normal Kunuts who are in charge of producing food and making the things the population needs. They can do all of that in the safety of the wayfarers.
So usually, only two people in an entire city or settlement are powerful. They are the wayfarers and the librarians. The rest are ordinary people who are as weak as normal humans.
These normal kunuts work to provide food or build for the 50 years of their lifespan until they die. Then their bodies are fed to the reproductives so that another generation of Kunuts will be born with their flesh.
The advent of the vampires changed that. Normal Kunuts could now turn into vampires and hunt other Kunuts to grow stronger.
Normal Kunuts have to learn how to fight to defend themselves and to attack settlements that had been infiltrated by vampires. They tried to create an army to resist, but they weren't built for fighting and couldn't be good soldiers.
So the Kunuts needed the help of the Yggdrasil civilization army. He was told all of these and more because of his special role in this operation.
A group of 100 soldiers was assigned to one wayfarer. So the 10,000 soldiers were assigned to 100 wayfarers.
The wayfarers would be their base while the community of Kunuts in the wayfarer would be their support and logistics team.
Kelvin was assigned to be the leader of his team. It was an honor that only soldiers with the potential to become three-star soldiers were given.
Soldiers would listen to anyone assigned to command them and obey orders without question. But it is always better to pick the strongest or smartest soldier to lead the rest. That way the leader can lead in actions or with intelligence.
When he found out that he would be leader, he didn't know if he should be happy or sad. He had mixed feelings about the leader of the group because of the bad experience he had the last time he was made a leader of a squad.
He should be happy that he is the leader since he would be the one to give orders and wouldn't have to be dragged down by others. But he didn't like being the leader because the leader is usually the one that is targeted first by the enemy.
He thought to himself in amusement, "I don't know if this is a good thing or not. I have been having this dilemma a lot recently. I'm sure that is a bad thing."
He could disobey orders and use his title as paragon to get away with it, but he didn't want to reveal his identity as a paragon and cash in the privilege of that title for something as small as this.
So he took it upon himself to accept the duty of a leader, and he promised to try his best. As the leader, he was the one who met the leader of the community they were assigned to. That meant he had to lead the way into the Wayfarer.
His team of 100 soldiers entered a wayfarer through its mouth. The soldiers didn't want to do that. They were afraid that they would be eaten, so he had to lead by example.
