Descendants of Gibbous
Chapter 51: Doubts

Chapter 51: Doubts

Days passed like a summer breeze since the enrollment ceremony and soon it was the day Damien and Ahara had been waiting for all December—the day to go shopping for Damien’s school stationery.

But they had to get money from the bank in the Draconic region first.

That’s why Damien was dressed in heavy warm clothing and sipping his tea, ready for the cold he was about to face where they were headed. Charles had warned the siblings that the city they were planning on visiting would be snowing at this time of the year—which meant they had to be prepared for it, only, Ahara was taking too long to finish her preparations.

’Should I go and check up on her or not?’

Before Damien could make a decision though, a knock sounded on their doorbell, making him pause from sipping his tea. He didn’t need to guess who it was, after all, he was the one who asked the man to come—and the way he knocked was now but familiar irritating music to Damien’s ears.

"Come in," the lad yelled before the door opened with a slight creak and thud on the wall.

In walked Kingston, covered in fur that looked like a coat—but Damien knew better than to think so. The wolves had a rather good trait that allowed them to make the hairs of their bodies appear or retract at will. It worked well in the cold weather like the one Damien and his family were about to visit—a natural coat that didn’t cost a thing—except for aura.

"She isn’t done yet is she?" Kingston asked.

Damien rolled his eyes. "I go behind my sister’s back to tell you about her whereabouts so you can fix whatever beef you two have and the first thing you think of when you see me is her?"

"Wouldn’t it be weird to think about anyone else when I’m pursuing her?" Kingston shrugged.

Damien silently groaned. He had tried to get the two of them to stop being weird around each other for god knows how long now, but it seemed they had a pending issue bigger than what he wanted to acknowledge, and it all seemed to be Kingston’s fault. Damien knew his sister very well. For her to be this mad at the wolf, he must have crossed a line that she warned him not to and she couldn’t just forgive him without seeing his efforts in mending whatever he had broken.

Either way, Damien still wanted to help him.

He wasn’t really fond of the guy in any way, but out of everyone he knew, Kingston was the only person who showed genuine love and concern for his sister. That alone was a trait good enough for Damien to know she’d be safe once he left for Gibforge. But for that to happen, the two of them had to make up first.

"Right. Let me go check up on her and see if she’s done yet—"

"Who are you talking to?" Ahara asked, walking down the staircase as she tried to peek at their guest.

Damien didn’t reply. He just waited for her to walk down until she was able to see Kingston standing by the door, his expression dropping from happy to be here, to amazed by what he was seeing when she came into view. He had to be—Ahara was dressed exactly how Damien pictured the rich aunties from the human world would—classy and chic.

A white fur coat that covered whatever outfit she had inside, huge golden crescent moon earrings that dangled every time she took a step, and despite the snow she would soon be walking on, she had boots with heels.

"You look stunning..." Kingston blurted out before he could stop himself.

Damien hummed in agreement, staring at his sister in awe as she descended the stairs. However, when she was near him, her icy grey eyes glancing between him and Kingston, he was suddenly reminded of his betrayal, or rather, the explanation he owed her.

"I called him. Figured I might need help from another male in deciding what kind of outfits might be useful at school and other staff."

Ahara opened her mouth to speak but closed it almost instantly. She might have wanted to lash out at Damien but his reasoning made sense. She could only help him make decisions on the simple stuff, but there were some things that Damien couldn’t ask her and she knew it.

Although, she still didn’t want to be near Kingston.

Ever since their fight, she hadn’t tried to talk things out with him simply because she feared doing so would break her resolve to stay away from him. What he had said to her that night still rang in her head every time she saw him, and she still found herself doubting him despite him showing her that he had somewhat repented.

However, Kingston still found a way to follow her no matter where she was.

Add him and Damien suddenly becoming buddies, the chances of her avoiding the wolf until Damien was gone to school and she could hunt again were getting slimmer. Ahara knew Kingston knew what he was doing. They weren’t exactly what someone would call normal friends, and he knew how to use that to his advantage. He was good at it too. And he was fixing the root of this fight by trying to be close to her brother more than he had ever done before.

But she wasn’t one to yield so easily to temptation either. If she was, he’d already be calling her his wife by now.

"Okay, he can come with us," Ahara told Damien, not sparing Kingston another glance as she adjusted her brother’s collar. "Did you wear everything Charles gave you?"

"I did," Damien replied, noting how his sister was ignoring Kingston’s existence.

"Good, I wouldn’t want you to freeze to death on your first encounter with snow now would I?"

Damien wriggled his hands animatedly at his sides, grinning at her. He had never seen snow back in the human world since he had spent his entire life in the southern region of Africa, nor had he visited other countries before. Now though, he could, and the idea of seeing it made him giddy.

"I brought ointments and vodka-induced potion just in case," Kingston offered, tapping on the gem by his wrist with an elongated nail.

It glowed the usual ocean blue that spread to the rings. However, unlike the last time Kingston produced a weapon from thin air, Damien noticed what looked like a small black circle appearing right in front of him before Kingston placed his hand inside it and pulled a small container and a bottle.

’So that’s how he did it the last time...’

"The vodka will help keep us heated if one of us gets cold, and the ointment is capable of heating your body once you apply it on your skin," Kingston explained, shaking the contents before returning them to the small portal.

"Does that work as some sort of storage space?" Damien asked pointing at the portal.

Kingston nodded, a bit surprised that Damien could now see his weapon storage portals. "Yes, it’s a perk that comes with being a werewolf, just like how vampires can manipulate blood."

’So I can’t use it then. What a bummer.’

"Okay. Now that we have everything we need, let’s head over to the border points in the city. We need to collect money from the bank and buy you the basic stationery and equipment by the end of the day," Ahara interjected, taking her brother’s hand but stopping herself before she walked.

"Oh, I had forgotten that you’re now a big boy who needs his independence."

’Ugh, not again!’

Before Damien could reply to her, Ahara was already outside the house, ready for take-off. Damien lazily walked towards the door, stood next to Kingston, and whispered:

"I don’t know how many times I’ve explained myself and told her I didn’t mean what I said."

Kingston snorted, a saddened expression resting on his face. "At least she talks to you, right?"
