Demon Hunter and His Cabin -
Chapter 728 - Chapter 728 Chapter 597 Chessboard
Chapter 728: Chapter 597: Chessboard Chapter 728: Chapter 597: Chessboard Click-Clack!
The chess pieces began to move, as if an invisible hand was maneuvering them through the game.
This time, perhaps because Roger’s own power had greatly increased, he watched for a long time, but no monsters appeared.
Gradually, Roger still discovered the pattern on the chessboard.
Repetition.
A peculiar state.
The chessboard was clearly in the midst of a game, yet after moving the pieces around for a while, they would return to their original places and, after a certain interval, begin another cycle.
This repetition prompted Roger to draw some associations.
After pondering for a moment, he leaped down from the edge of the patio.
The moment his body became airborne, the surrounding environment changed suddenly; the sunken patio disappeared, and the chessboard at the bottom vanished as well.
The space before him twisted, segmented into various transparent compartments. Through these invisible barriers, Roger saw many struggling life forms.
Some were strong, some were weak, but no matter what they did, they couldn’t break the barriers. More horrifying was the fact that when they tried to break through, they would be crushed by an oppressive force, instantly turning into a lump of flesh.
Quickly, everything inside returned to normal, and the crushed flesh reformed into its original shape. They seemed to forget everything that had just happened, and charged forward again with roars.
Time and time again.
Over and over.
His body floated in mid-air, surrounded by one transparent cell after another. The space was cramped; this was no chessboard but rather a series of prisons.
Roger looked up. Above him was the cyclical chessboard. With each move, a creature below struggled to break free from the cage, only to be crushed into a mass of flesh.
Was this really a chessboard or a prison?
Unfortunately, the power of the Mist Hut was limited. It couldn’t assimilate other World Fragments like the Shadow Cottage, or else Roger could have learned much more about this chessboard and its connection to the world.
As he moved through the space, Roger faced no restrictions and quickly arrived at a square stone stele. A flash of light, and his mind was filled with new information.
It contained nothing related to this world, but it did include methods to control the chessboard and the process of containing or releasing the monsters within it.
“The Mist Forest is going to be much livelier now,” Roger said with delight.
The function of the Mist Forest was quite practical, but its distribution of monsters was not rich enough. Now, with a ready-made template, by manipulating it, he could place many more monsters in the Mist Forest.
“Was this chessboard generated by this world, or… is the Misty World just a box to hold the chessboard?”
Roger couldn’t explore the secrets behind it for the time being, but he was already quite satisfied with what he had gained.
There was no so-called battle, but if Roger had come here when his power was still meager, without any surprise, the moment the light flashed, he would have exploded due to the immense mental pressure.
Whether he would truly die or be crammed into one of those narrow cages to endlessly repeat the same cycle like those creatures he saw, Roger couldn’t tell.
One must always be careful in any Cursed Land.
Because chaotic rules are often more dangerous than powerful enemies.
Who knows how many years this chessboard has been in operation; even its seemingly perfect rules had begun to show loopholes. Without external interference, it wouldn’t be long before the contents would escape due to the damage to the chessboard.
But even then, they would merely move from a narrow cage to a slightly larger one.
Roger vaguely associated something in his mind; he thought of the Mountain Woman and Uma, creatures also trapped within World Fragments.
The difference is that the rules of the two worlds vary slightly.
“Chessboard space… Misty World…”
This world held too many secrets, some without any answers. Roger set aside his doubts, focusing on sorting through the information in his mind.
The creatures here couldn’t be released into the real world, but as long as they appeared in the Misty World, the training grounds could project them into the Mist Forest.
Containment and release.
Having mastered the method and carefully studied the types of monsters, Roger returned to Kaer Morhen through the Mist Hut.
He informed Henrik of some matters that needed attention, then left the Mist Forest and returned to the heights of Kaer Morhen.
There stood a pitch-black tower.
So far, almost no Demon Hunters had ventured here.
The majority of Demon Hunters were still in their growing phase. It would take some time before they had enough strength to explore the unknown worlds.
Before entering the Tower of Shadows, Roger opened the Fairytale Manuscripts and released Yuan Guanghai. As for Higurashi Chika, he had already brought her out and introduced her to the others soon after arriving here.
“I like this place,” Higurashi Chika said fluently in Armenian. As for Yuan Guanghai, due to the attributes of his body, he had been repelled from the moment he arrived here.
What puzzled him even more was that Roger somehow had the ability to cross the boundaries between Everworld and reality.
When he learned this place was Armenia within the real world, Yuan Guanghai looked conflicted.
The Tower of Shadows’ exterior was almost meaningless; its internal space was peculiar, with each floor acting as a separate door, each door leading to another world.
