Demon Hunter and His Cabin -
Chapter 253 - Chapter 253 Chapter 253 Vampire Monster
Chapter 253: Chapter 253 Vampire Monster Chapter 253: Chapter 253 Vampire Monster Perhaps it was because concern breeds chaos, but Henrik, normally full of chatter, had become somewhat silent after arriving in New Moon City.
He sat in the carriage without saying a word, his mind occupied with who knows what thoughts.
“If we find a clue to that thing later…”
“Clang!”
The carriage jolted, and Roger looked outside. The city walls were receding in the distance; he glanced at Henrik and understood the implication in his words.
Henrik wanted to resolve the issue with the female Night Demon on his own.
“I can only take you this far.”
The carriage slowed down and came to a stop.
Roger and his companion stepped down from the carriage; New Moon City was now barely visible in the distance, surrounded by a wilderness dotted with withered trees, from which a black crow descended, emitting a piercing screech.
“Please be sure to follow the marked trail on the map, the wilderness around New Moon City is very dangerous.”
The coachman sighed.
“This is an incredibly eerie place because you never know from where the monsters will appear.”
Roger nodded, watching the carriage head back the way it came. Compared to the Cursed Land he had visited before, New Moon City and the surrounding area were much larger.
He had not yet grasped many of the rules here, and his experiences in the fishing village prior had informed him of the dangers of the wilderness outside New Moon City.
He unfolded the map and walked for about an hour more before arriving at the village marked for the mission.
Here was a peculiar phenomenon: the greater the number of inhabitants, the less likely monsters appeared, and consequently, the safer it was.
When they arrived at the small village, it was midday, yet the silence was as profound as a graveyard, and not a single person was seen moving about the streets.
From afar, smoke could be seen rising from just a few households.
Henrik had intended to ask around, but before he could approach, a pair of eyes at the window hurriedly retreated, followed by the sound of a bolt sliding into place.
“What’s wrong with the people here?”
“I’ll handle this.”
Roger stepped forward, proceeding to a wooden door as per the mission information.
“We’ve come from New Moon City to investigate the dried-up corpses that were found earlier.”
A murky eye flitted through the door slit, pausing on Roger for a moment and revealing a hint of surprise.
Creak.
The wooden door opened to reveal a face etched with lines.
“You are…”
He looked at Roger with astonishment.
“I’m here to investigate the incidents of monster attacks in the village. May you take us to see the bodies?”
“Heh…”
The old man’s throat seemed clogged with thick phlegm before he nodded, “Follow me.”
Roger gave Henrik a sign, and the latter nodded, making his way elsewhere in the village.
“When did the monster attacks start?”
“About five days ago, I suppose.”
The old man furrowed his brow in thought.
“The first to die was Peter, an old bachelor. But the night before he died, it seems someone heard faint laughter coming from his room.”
“Life is already hard enough. In a world like this, who could still manage to laugh?”
The pair walked toward a place away from the village.
On a hillside, there was a shelter made of straw, and inside the shelter lay several bodies side by side.
“One each night, at this rate the village will be emptied of its people!”
The old man sighed, his murky eyes filled with bewilderment.
Roger stepped forward, examining each of the bodies carefully.
“Indeed, the essence blood has been drained from their bodies!”
A slightly surprised voice came from behind. Henrik had followed without notice. Roger gave him an inquiring look, but Henrik just shook his head.
Clearly, the people of the village were very resistant to him, and his usual successful approach in the Bordeaux region was completely ineffective here.
Under the shed lay five bodies in a row, all male. Because their essence blood had been drained, each body looked extremely small.
As mentioned in the mission brief, even though they had turned into mummies, the smile on the faces of the corpses could easily be discerned.
Seeing this smile, Henrik couldn’t help but shiver.
“Five days in a row, yet only one person killed each day.”
Roger glanced at Henrik, a trace of confusion on his face, “Does she have a different purpose, or is her strength limited to only one kill?”
“This is that woman’s usual trick. She likes to play with people’s emotions. According to her habits, she should come again tonight. We just need to wait in this village…”
An eager look flashed in Henrik’s eyes.
“Wait a minute.”
Just then, Roger suddenly noticed a distinctive red dot on the neck of a corpse. The dull color of the body and the red spot on the skin blended together, making it difficult to distinguish at first glance.
“This wound…”
Roger looked at Henrik.
Henrik’s eyes narrowed, and he quickly examined the other five bodies. When he stood up, his facial expression had changed.
“This type of wound wasn’t made by a female Night Demon.” A strange expression crossed his face.
“That creature prefers to use its tongue, their tongues are thin and long, sliding directly into the victim’s body through the mouth…”
Upon hearing Henrik’s description, Roger couldn’t help but shudder. The thought alone was very unpleasant.
What on earth had this guy been through?
“Could it not be her?”
Roger was somewhat puzzled.
Doubt also showed on Henrik’s face.
“I can’t be sure now. We can only wait until tonight.”
The two discussed for a while, then walked around the village and found a high point. All that was left to do was wait patiently.
After eating something and resting for a while, time flew by and the sun set. Night fell.
Without modern facilities, the entire village was as dark as a pit at nightfall. As the last few lights faded, the surroundings plunged into complete darkness.
As time ticked by, nearing midnight, a faint sound of air being split approached. A vague shadow swept by in the distance, then landed on a tree branch at the edge of the village.
There was no moonlight this night, and one couldn’t see their hand in front of their face. But even in these conditions, with Hunter Vision activated, Roger could still see the figure perched on the distant branch.
It was an upright humanoid creature, with a furry head and a pair of wide flesh wings on its back–the edges of the wings as sharp as bone knives.
The creature’s eyes were thin and long, its mouth protruding outward. When it opened and closed, one could see a proboscis-like mouthpart.
“It’s a Vampire Monster,”
Henrik whispered, disappointment evident in his eyes.
They had clearly got the wrong target.
This creature would inject a special toxin into its victims before killing them, a poison that could paralyze the nerves and induce hallucinations.
Then they would take their time to savour every drop of the victim’s essence blood.
“Let’s deal with it first,”
Roger whispered back.
With its ability to fly, it would be best to take it down in one shot.
Henrik gripped his gun tightly, “You just take your shot, and if it jumps into the air…”
“Click!”
“I’ll blow its mouth off!”
