Chapter 86: When Men "Marry Off"

Faced with Meng Chao’s anger, the agent truly felt a deep sense of fear and began regretting his actions.

But in his heart, he knew that even if he had to do it over, he would still make the same choice. He had gambled—betting on Lin Qin’s place in Meng Chao’s heart. And now, it was clear: Lin Qin was Meng Chao’s greatest treasure, his sole untouchable.

He lost. Completely and utterly.

The agent let out a bitter laugh. "I understand. I won’t stay in this industry any longer."

If he had simply resigned today without using underhanded tactics, a manager who had cultivated an international award-winning actor would be highly sought after in the business. He not only had the skills but also the connections. But now everything had changed. By thoroughly offending Meng Chao, whose word carried immense weight in the industry, he had ensured that he was finished.

He had sabotaged his own bright future.

The agent felt both unwilling and powerless.

He now only hoped that the Meng Family patriarch would disapprove of Lin Qin and act against him. That way, he could at least vent his bitterness and resentment.

Without any words from Meng Chao, the agent left promptly.

Everything that took place in the office was clearly visible to those outside through the transparent glass wall.

So, as the agent walked out of the office, he could feel the mocking gazes fixed on him—gazes that seemed to laugh at his overestimation of himself.

Inside, the agent bitterly mocked himself: Yes, of course, he overestimated himself, constantly coveting something that was never within his reach.

Lin Qin kept his eyes on the agent as he left, then turned to Meng Chao with a displeased expression. "He just hugged you," Lin Qin said, his tone sour, as if he had just chugged an entire bottle of vinegar.

Pulling Lin Qin back into his embrace, Meng Chao responded with a question instead of an answer. "Do you trust me that much? Hmm?"

"Of course I trust you," Lin Qin replied. "I know you wouldn’t do anything to betray me."

Meng Chao opened his arms.

Lin Qin looked at him, puzzled. "What is it?"

"Didn’t you just say he hugged me?" Meng Chao teased with a smile. "Then how about you hug me now and cover up his scent?"

Lin Qin, without hesitation, threw his arms around Meng Chao and held him tightly. Possessively, he declared, "Only I’m allowed to hug you!" His playful glare and ferocious, puppy-like demeanor made him both fierce and adorable.

Meng Chao hugged him back, his laughter low and affectionate. "Alright, this embrace will always be yours alone."

Finally, Lin Qin broke into a smile.

"What’s going on with your agent?" After sharing the intimate moment, Lin Qin eventually voiced the question that had been lingering in his mind.

He had heard Meng Chao mention before that he and his agent didn’t see eye to eye, but Lin Qin felt that mere differences in philosophy shouldn’t have escalated into such a complete fallout. Clearly, something had transpired that Lin Qin wasn’t aware of.

Not keeping anything from Lin Qin, Meng Chao explained bluntly, "He went behind my back and complained to my grandfather, attempting to use him to harm you. I can’t keep someone like that around."

"What did he complain about?" Lin Qin asked.

"Do you really want to know?" Meng Chao raised an eyebrow as he looked at Lin Qin.

Lin Qin’s curiosity flared at Meng Chao’s expression. Without hesitation, he said, "Just tell me. I can handle anything."

Meng Chao made a show of reluctance before relenting. "He told my grandfather that I’m dating a man named Lin Qin."

Lin Qin: "!!!!"

So, Meng Chao’s grandfather knew he existed? Had he inadvertently made an impression on Meng Chao’s grandfather?

Could things catch him off guard any more than this?

As if that weren’t enough, Meng Chao added, "Now that my grandfather knows about you, I’ve decided to take you to meet my family tomorrow."

Lin Qin: "!!!!"

Flustered, Lin Qin said, "Isn’t that a bit rushed? I haven’t prepared anything."

Shaking his head with a doting expression, Meng Chao reassured him, "There’s no need. Just having you there will be the best gift for them."

Lin Qin’s heart melted at Meng Chao’s words, but he still couldn’t suppress his nervousness. After all, meeting the family was a big deal, and one day to prepare just didn’t feel sufficient.

Meng Chao gently ruffled Lin Qin’s fluffy hair and comforted him, "It’s alright. I’ll handle everything tomorrow."

Those words—"I’ll handle everything tomorrow"—were the strongest dose of reassurance Lin Qin could ask for. Instantly, he felt his fears subside.

However, recalling Meng Chao’s earlier remarks, Lin Qin hesitantly asked, "Does your grandfather not like me?"

Not hiding the truth, Meng Chao responded, "He doesn’t like anyone who isn’t someone he picked to be his grandchild’s spouse. It’s not about you specifically."

Lin Qin immediately understood the implication of Meng Chao’s words. His grandfather was probably a domineering, controlling elder who insisted on dictating the course of his grandson’s life, including choosing a marriage partner for him.

Without needing further explanation, Lin Qin’s mind began to paint a picture of a stubborn, old-fashioned man. Facing someone like that, Lin Qin—completely inexperienced in dealing with such personalities—felt his anxiety flood back, washing over him like a rising tide.

"Then... how about I don’t go?" Lin Qin faltered, suggesting cautiously, "Maybe we should take this slow?"

"No way!" Meng Chao immediately rejected the idea. "I can’t wait any longer. I can’t wait to claim you openly, to announce to the world that you’re mine."

That declaration was both domineering and urgent—just like the emotions surging through Meng Chao at that very moment. Even though their relationship had lasted less than a year, Meng Chao was certain that Lin Qin was *the one*, the love of his life. A voice in his heart resounded with conviction: it had to be Lin Qin—forever.

He refused to delay any longer. He wanted to brand Lin Qin as his, to make it known that Lin Qin belonged to him and no one else.

Even so, he wanted to shield Lin Qin from any form of hardship. Though his grandfather had this or that flaw, he was still family, and Meng Chao hoped to win his grandfather’s blessing. He didn’t want Lin Qin to face continuous pressure from his family after they married.

Lin Qin was moved by Meng Chao’s words. After a long pause, he smiled resolutely and said, "Alright, tomorrow it is."

As long as Meng Chao was by his side, he would be willing to brave any danger—even the lion’s den or the tiger’s lair.

...

The following morning, Meng Chao’s car was already parked outside the Lin Chengdu family villa.

Lin Qin had woken up extra early and had someone deliver a custom-made suit. By the time Meng Chao arrived, Lin Qin was standing in front of the mirror for the 101st time, scrutinizing every detail of his appearance. He couldn’t help worrying about making even the slightest mistake and leaving a bad impression on Meng Chao’s family.

"It’s just meeting a family member. Why so formal?" Lin Chengdu remarked from the doorway of Lin Qin’s room. Watching Lin Qin dress up for someone else, he felt conflicted.

Why do grown sons also have to act like they’re "marrying off"? What was this bittersweet, fatherly feeling of sending a daughter away for marriage?
