Chapter 85: The Protective Little Bunny
Feather-like snowflakes drifted down from the sky, swirling and covering the entire world. In just one night, the next day had brought a pristine blanket of white, adorning everything in a silvery embrace. It was breathtakingly beautiful.
Early in the morning, Meng Chao headed out. His studio was situated in the busiest area of the city center. Even though he had left early, he still ended up stuck in traffic.
After crawling at a snail’s pace for an hour, Meng Chao finally reached his studio, just as the workday began.
The employees at the studio looked up and greeted Meng Chao as he entered. With a brief nod in acknowledgment, he headed straight to his office.
His agent was already waiting in the office, holding a resignation letter. If one had to leave, it should be done with dignity—proactively resigning was better than being fired.
"You’re here," the agent said, crossing his arms as he sat in the chair, his expression calm.
Meng Chao sat opposite Golden Wheel, his long legs crossing casually, his chin tilting slightly upward. "I know you’re a smart person. Farewell," he said, cutting straight to the point without unnecessary pleasantries.
The agent chuckled, "Meng Chao, are you really so heartless? All these years working with you, if not for contributions, I’ve certainly endured hardships. And now you’re just letting me go like this?" Although he already knew the answer and understood Meng Chao wouldn’t try to keep him, the agent couldn’t stop himself from asking again, despite knowing it would only humiliate him further.
"I’ll have the finance department add some extra pay for you," Meng Chao said. He wasn’t entirely cold-hearted; at least he gave what was owed.
Just as expected.
The agent wasn’t surprised at all by this response. He allowed a bitter smile to surface, pushing the resignation letter toward Meng Chao. "I don’t care about the money. I just hope, once I’m gone, you won’t regret it."
Having worked closely with Meng Chao for many years, the agent naturally knew many of his secrets. This resignation appeared frictionless on the surface, but in truth, it wasn’t amicable. At least, from the agent’s perspective, it felt deeply unfair. He had poured years of effort into Meng Chao, only to be cast aside just because of Lin Qin’s arrival. Not even a thank-you—and he was simply terminated. Anyone in his shoes would feel aggrieved, especially someone who...
...was deeply in love with Meng Chao.
Meng Chao let out a faint smile. "I’ve done nothing wrong, so why would I regret it?"
The agent’s threats were meaningless; he might think he had dirt on Meng Chao, but Meng Chao was confident he had behaved honorably all these years. He had no fear of any revelations.
"True enough." The agent shrugged indifferently, his gaze shifting to the glass wall of the office. Suddenly, his lips curved into a smile.
He unexpectedly rushed toward Meng Chao.
Caught off guard, Meng Chao was thrown off balance as the agent collided with him. But just as the agent lifted his head in an attempt to kiss Meng Chao, Meng Chao avoided the advance.
Meng Chao quickly pushed the agent aside, his sharp gaze flicking toward the window. At some point, Lin Qin had appeared, standing outside.
"So this is the ’dirt’ you were hinting at?" Meng Chao immediately understood the agent’s ploy and mocked him with a sneer.
The agent shrugged again, climbing up from the floor. "Yeah. This kind of dirt depends entirely on who sees it. Do you think Lin Qin, having witnessed this scene, will still believe you?"
Meng Chao smiled with absolute confidence, "Why don’t we bet on it?"
"That he trusts me unconditionally."
"Fine, it doesn’t harm me at all anyway." The agent perched himself on the desk, crossing his arms with a defeated air.
Before long, Lin Qin opened the door and walked in.
He walked up to Meng Chao, standing firmly by his side, his round eyes glaring directly at the agent. "You were the one who used Brother Chao’s name to call me over just now, weren’t you?"
His tone was heavy, coupled with a severe expression. He resembled a protective little beast. Rather than intimidating, though, his display was endearing.
The agent froze, surprised that Lin Qin’s first question wasn’t about doubt over Meng Chao’s relationship with him.
Lin Qin seemed to see through the agent’s thoughts and proactively clarified, "Sorry, I’m not stupid. If it were really Brother Chao who invited me here, he would never have let me witness such a scene—he’s not foolish either."
Pausing for a moment, Lin Qin added with a touch of disdain, "So the only idiot here is you. Have you watched too many overly dramatic soap operas? Did you really think something like this could drive a wedge between me and Brother Chao?"
The agent: "..."
Meng Chao pulled Lin Qin close, seating him on his lap. Right in front of the agent, he planted a deliberate kiss on Lin Qin’s cheek, then shrugged at the agent.
It was a childish display—a little like a triumphant child flaunting victory before their opponent. It didn’t match Meng Chao’s usual refined persona.
But that exact defiance caused the agent’s fury to boil over, his teeth clenched tightly as he glared at Meng Chao and Lin Qin. His gaze carried venom, as if his glare alone could tear them to pieces.
Lin Qin adjusted his position to shield Meng Chao behind him, puffing out his chest as if daring the agent to confront him. His posture brimmed with a bold and protective spirit.
When it was about Meng Chao, Lin Qin had vowed to himself—he wouldn’t back down.
The agent stared at Lin Qin with hatred. Just a little while ago, Lin Qin had been timid and cautious, but now he displayed unexpected courage, even attempting to protect Meng Chao. Laughable. Ridiculous.
Meng Chao chuckled deeply, his voice low and rich, tinged with pleasure. His little bunny—a protective one—filled him with an intoxicating sense of joy. The feeling of being guarded by someone was addicting.
Nonetheless, Meng Chao whispered gently into Lin Qin’s ear, "Alright, let me handle this myself."
Lin Qin immediately obeyed, retreating to the side. His warning glare, however, remained fixed on the agent.
"This didn’t have to end this ugly," Meng Chao said, rising to his feet. His towering frame exuded a palpable sense of authority.
Lin Qin glanced at Meng Chao and instantly noticed Meng Chao’s smoldering anger.
Even the agent could feel it. He tried to step back, only to realize the table was right behind him. He had nowhere to retreat and could only watch as Meng Chao approached.
Meng Chao stopped two steps away from the agent, his dark, piercing eyes locked onto him, brimming with an intensity akin to a deep-sea predator poised to drown its prey in an instant.
The agent’s body quivered involuntarily, stumbling over his words, "I... I..."
Having worked closely with Meng Chao for years, the agent knew his temper. While Meng Chao appeared calm and easygoing, trampling on his bottom line unleashed a fury that few could withstand.
The agent understood this, yet because of his bitterness, he’d boldly stomped on that boundary.
