Chapter 48: 42. Not only the beginning, but the entire process and ending of this date were all wrong_2
"Of course," Yuzao Haomei replied impatiently.
She opened up the photo album on her phone and showed Dubian Che the footage of penguins squabbling for food in the water.
Yuzao Haomei’s phone was just like her style, covered in all sorts of decorative stickers, pretty yet overly ornate.
"Look, penguins are so cute, the way they wave their flippers like they really want to be hugged!"
Kiyono Lin focused on the phone screen and said, "Yuzao, those are flippers."
"They are obviously hands! How could they be feet if they’re on the sides of the body?"
"Yuzao, if you like them, you should take some time to understand them better."
Yuzao Haomei glared at Dubian Che.
What are you glaring at me for? Don’t look at me. I may have studied marine life, but I don’t understand penguins... However, Dubian Che trusted Kiyono Lin and nodded, saying, "They’re flippers."
Yuzao Haomei’s breath intensified, and the overly sweet scent that Dubian Che had grown used to once again assaulted his senses. He dodged slightly and then noticed the very comfortable scent coming from Kiyono Lin.
"Little Che, whether it’s penguins or dolphins, which one do you like more?" Yuzao Haomei asked with the tone of a girlfriend.
Kiyono Lin propped her chin with her hand, "It’s a tough choice... but dolphins are cuter, and they’re more human-like."
"I didn’t ask you!" Yuzao Haomei shot her a glare before turning her intense gaze back to Dubian Che.
"Does my opinion really matter?" Dubian Che glanced at the pool out of the corner of his eye, wondering when it would start.
Dolphins are such lazy creatures.
"I’d like to know which side you’d pick, Mr. Dubian," Kiyono Lin said with a kind smile like a judge giving a criminal a chance, "Time to prove your aesthetic sense, Mr. Dubian."
Are these women crazy?
"Whether it’s dolphins or penguins, I don’t like either," Dubian Che said, "What I like are the wild beasts that roam the countryside and the oxen chewing grass on the ridges."
"Rural tastes," Yuzao Haomei snorted.
"Predictably bad," Kiyono Lin nodded as if she were a judge who, after listening to a statement, said ’no hope, death penalty’ with decisive coldness.
"Hey, enough, both of you. Especially you, Kiyono. Have you also read ’The Great Gatsby’? Doesn’t the first line, ’Whenever you feel like criticizing anyone, just remember that not all the people in this world have had the advantages that you’ve had,’ teach you anything?"
"But, Mr. Dubian, the world is simply unfair and the only thing you can do is try to change yourself rather than trying to negotiate with the other side to give up their advantages, even if they were born with them."
"...I can’t win an argument with you," Dubian Che conceded.
Kiyono Lin smiled slightly: "It’s admirable that you faced me with the will to win."
"Winning or losing doesn’t matter, but," Dubian Che said earnestly, "I won’t let you say cows aren’t cute. Cows are such hard-working animals; not only do they do physical labor, but they also give milk and their meat can be eaten!"
"Eh?" Yuzao Haomei looked puzzled, "That’s a weird reason for being cute?"
"Their usefulness doesn’t stop there, oh no, they can also help finish homework."
"Help with homework?" the two beauties asked simultaneously.
"That old cow in the village left a huge pile on my way to school. I remember it so well that during the summer of my second year in junior high, when I couldn’t think of what to write for my holiday report, I made up an essay called ’A Study on the Diet, Farm Labor, and Manure of Cows.’"
Dubian Che spread his hands and concluded, "See, aren’t cows just adorable!"
Yuzao Haomei was momentarily at a loss for words.
She felt a sense of fear toward Dubian Che’s hometown – there were actually cows pooping on the road? Even if it was a cow.
Kiyono Lin rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on after listening to his story.
"Mr. Dubian, cute does not equal usefulness; I hope you understand that. Also, you shouldn’t make things up when it comes to research."
Just as Dubian Che was about to continue expounding on his aesthetic views, a dolphin suddenly leaped from the pool, so no one listened to him anymore.
After the dolphin show, which wasn’t nearly as interesting as watching cows graze in Dubian Che’s opinion, Yuzao Haomei suggested going to the gift shop to buy aquarium souvenirs, but he excused himself saying he had work in the afternoon and left earlier.
After leaving them, Dubian Che turned into a DVD store near Shinagawa Station to rent some movies with original English audio.
As for Spanish, he was still an entry-level learner and didn’t plan to practice listening and speaking through entertainment just yet.
Dubian Che knew nothing about American TV series; he wandered around the store and, not finding any suitable series, but because he had some extra money, he couldn’t resist buying the Blu-ray of the first season of "Sword Art Online."
’I should have consulted Kiyono Lin earlier.’
Dubian Che didn’t mind asking for help from someone he disliked, as long as the person was indeed superior to him and willing to instruct him.
When he took out his phone, prepared to search online for similar information, a familiar figure walked through the shop door.
"Mr. Dubian, aren’t you supposed to be at work?" Kiyono Lin teased, with the addition of a dolphin and penguin plush toy to her attire.
By now, this level of venomous tongue was no longer able to anger Dubian Che.
He glanced at the two white plush toys in transparent plastic bags, "Thank you for not exposing me earlier."
"Though I really dislike lying, I don’t have the habit of exposing others as long as it’s not directed at me."
"Is that so." Dubian Che nodded, then as if he remembered something, said, "Oh right, I wanted to ask you for a favor, please recommend a few American TV shows to me that are helpful for practicing speaking and listening."
"Any American TV series is good for practice if you set your mind to it, but if you want my recommendations, I’ll go with ’Downton Abbey’ and ’Doctor Strange.’"
"Thank you."
As Dubian Che was about to search, Kiyono Lin added, "These are DVDs, and they come with subtitles for the general public, but if you need them, I can lend you mine."
"Really?"
Kiyono Lin smiled triumphantly, "One moment targeting you, the next lending you personal items, this is my sixth method to make you fall for me."
What happened to the fifth one, and why is it missing like the second and third?
But never mind, Dubian Che wasn’t interested in these things, and asking would only subject him to ridicule.
Learning was more important.
He said, "If it’s possible, can I borrow them now? I’d like to start watching them today."
Kiyono Lin considered for a moment, then nodded, "Wait here."
She then wandered around the shop, picked up a few Blu-ray discs.
When they were checking out, Dubian Che caught sight of the covers – they were documentaries about dolphins and penguins.
Kiyono Lin lived in an apartment near the school, and Dubian Che found that from his spartan rental room, he could look out and see the tall building.
Perhaps they lived so close they might have bought barley tea from the same shelf at the same supermarket—Dubian Che could only think of barley tea, but it was quite possible Kiyono Lin only drank black tea.
Soon enough, Kiyono Lin came down from her apartment, handing Dubian Che two discs, the exact Blu-ray subtitle-free versions of "Downton Abbey" and "Doctor Strange."
"You previously lent me books, and now you’re lending me discs, I really don’t know how to thank you... Next time I’m free, let me take you out to eat, somewhere fancy is fine."
Kiyono Lin shook her head, her shiny black hair swaying, "No need to, just don’t claim you have no money when I want a drink in the future."
Dubian Che laughed, "Kiyono, I’ve realized you’re actually pretty cool, even if I don’t like you, I would be happy to be friends with someone like you."
"Impossible." The rejection was instant.
"..."
Watching Dubian Che’s baffled expression, Kiyono Lin broke into a brilliant smile.
"Didn’t I tell you at the barbecue restaurant? I won’t make friends with someone who lies, unless you admit you’re not human."
"I’ll be leaving." Dubian Che turned and walked away.
Since the rental room wasn’t far, Dubian Che chose to walk home, ending up covered in sweat.
After showering, he poured himself a glass of iced barley tea and started watching "Downton Abbey" while sitting in front of the fan.
"There can be too much truth in any relationships."
Dubian Che repeated the phrase with the same sweetly indirect elegance and then translated, "Between people, too much honesty can indeed be counterproductive."
"Couldn’t agree more!"
He raised his glass to the characters on the TV screen.
Dubian Che listened to the sentence three times to make sure he had the words and tone just right before continuing.
The next time he had a verbal spar with Kiyono Lin, he planned to use this phrase and let her "taste her own medicine."
Just thinking about that scene made the barley tea in Dubian Che’s hand suddenly seem to carry the aroma of black tea.
