Chapter 909: Chapter 906: Rather Be with You

At ten o’clock, Yan Bo suddenly made a phone call.

"Xiao Hua, is it okay if you come home a bit later tonight?"

Tong Xiaohua was somewhat taken aback. Since their relationship had progressed from friends to lovers, they usually met between evening and eight or nine o’clock. Generally, Yan Bo seldom asked her out this late.

"Is there something wrong? If it’s something urgent, I could let my parents know. It’s okay if I go back later."

Though Tong Xiaohua had never returned late from a date, she knew from her mother’s attitude that returning home late was not an issue, as long as she was with Yan Bo.

"I just found out that a band I really like is performing in L City tonight, starting at 10:30. Could you come with me to see them?"

Tong Xiaohua glanced sideways at Qin Ming sitting beside her, leaned slightly to one side, and with a soft chuckle, said, "If I don’t go, who do you plan to ask to accompany you?"

A hearty laugh came from the phone, "Tsk! Are you jealous?"

Tong Xiaohua raised her eyebrows, stubbornly refusing to admit it, "Who said that? I’m just curious."

"Don’t worry, if you don’t go with me, I plan to ask Ling Qingyun to accompany me."

Tong Xiaohua let out a small sigh of relief, "Sorry, my mom felt a bit unwell this evening, I want to go back early to check on her."

Being with her boyfriend was important, but never more so than her own mother’s health.

"Auntie Tong is not feeling well? What happened? Does she need to go to the hospital to have it checked out?" Yan Bo’s voice was full of concern.

"She didn’t go to the hospital, Uncle Du checked on her, it should be nothing serious." Although Tong Xiaohua said this, the image of her mother’s pale face from the evening kept coming to mind, making her feel somewhat uncertain.

"Then you should hurry back and stay with your mom. I’ll have Ling Qingyun go with me. If there’s anything, call me anytime, I’m available 24 hours."

Tong Xiaohua agreed and chatted for a few more moments before hanging up the phone.

Preoccupied with her mother’s health, Tong Xiaohua left shortly after finishing her call with Yan Bo, asking Qin Ming to continue patrolling on his own.

Even so, by the time she arrived home, it was already past eleven. The little night lamp was on in the living room, indicating that her parents had already gone to their bedroom to rest.

Uncle Yuan always waited for her to return home, and this time was no exception as he came out to greet her.

"Miss, there’s some tonic soup stewing in the kitchen, specially made for you by your sister-in-law. Would you like some now?"

Tong Xiaohua replied affirmatively and went to the kitchen to wash her hands, "Did my mother go to bed early?"

Uncle Yuan, while serving the soup, responded, "Yes, your sister-in-law went to bed at nine o’clock."

Tong Xiaohua frowned slightly, "She didn’t have any discomfort, did she?"

Uncle Yuan’s movements paused momentarily before placing the soup cup on the tray and turning to her, "No, she didn’t mention it. Her appetite was quite good at dinner, wasn’t it? After you and your brother went out, she watched TV in the living room for a while. Then, when your brother came back, he took her for a walk around the courtyard before she went to her room to sleep."

Tong Xiaohua responded with an "Oh," took the tray from Uncle Yuan’s hand, and carried it out herself.

With a heavy heart, she finished the soup. Tong Xiaohua really wanted to knock on the door to check on her mother, but she was afraid of waking her. In the end, she did nothing and returned to her own room.

After showering and coming out, she noticed her phone flashing; Yan Bo had sent her a message.

"Xiao Hua, have you arrived home? How is Auntie Tong? Give me a call if it’s convenient for you!"

So Tong Xiaohua called him back. The phone rang for quite a while before being answered. In the background, a noisy sound could be heard, then, with a "bang," the world seemed to fall completely silent.

"Yan Bo? Are you still at the concert?"

"Yeah, with Ling Qingyun and two other youths from aristocratic families, it ended at twelve o’clock," Yan Bo reported truthfully.

Tong Xiaohua held the phone in one hand and flipped the covers to climb into bed with the other, "Sorry, I couldn’t accompany you to the concert."

"Silly, what is there to be sorry for? If possible, I would much rather be with you," said Yan Bo with deep affection in his voice, and Tong Xiaohua didn’t doubt that he was speaking his heart.

"Forget it, right now I still don’t know what’s up with my mom, I always feel like my parents are hiding something from me."

As she spoke of this, Tong Xiaohua’s mood dipped once again.

"Silly, why think so much about it? If there really is something, Uncle Tong and Auntie Tong will definitely tell you. Don’t overthink it."

"Hmm..." Tong Xiaohua also felt she was being a bit neurotic, perhaps, because she cared too much about her mom?

"What band’s concert did you go to see? I had no idea you liked these things!"

Tong Xiaohua didn’t want to dampen Yan Bo’s spirits. She hadn’t accompanied him to the concert, so the least she could do was not bother him with pointless chatter, hence she quickly changed the subject.

"A rock band called Grey Leopard. One of their members got married and left, so it had been years since I saw their performance. Recently, that member made a comeback, that’s why I was so eager to see them."

It seemed Yan Bo understood that Tong Xiaohua didn’t want to dwell on any particular subject and shifted the conversation towards the band as well.

"I’ve heard of this band, they have many classic songs."

Tong Xiaohua had indeed heard of the band, but she wasn’t a fan, so her enthusiasm was moderate and she wasn’t very familiar with them.

"Do you like them? If you do, when you come over to my place some time, I’ll play their music for you. I have all their albums," he offered.

It was hard for Tong Xiaohua to imagine that Yan Bo could be so passionate about someone else.

"Okay, but I probably won’t have any time to come over to your place for a while."

Yan Bo didn’t ask why. Given his intelligence and understanding of Tong Xiaohua, he must know that she wanted to spend more time at home with her parents.

Tong Xiaohua thought it would be a long while before she could listen to those albums in Yan Bo’s collection.

Yet unexpectedly, the next morning, while she was having breakfast with her parents in the dining room, the security guard at the gate called to say that Third Young Master Yan was visiting.

"Let him in, and from now on, just let him through without announcement," Tong Xiaohua gave the directive without hesitation.

The security guard sounded surprised, "Any time, Miss?"

"Yes, any time."

After hanging up the phone, Tong Xiaohua explained to her parents, who were giving her scrutinizing looks, "It’s Yan Bo. I told the security to let him in directly next time, without informing me beforehand."

Mr. Tong and Mrs. Tong looked at each other, then Mr. Tong nodded, "Oh, it’s your decision."

Tong Xiaohua merely responded with an "Mhmm," and bowed her head to continue eating her porridge. Mrs. Tong, however, looking back and forth between the father and daughter, asked, "What brings Xiao Yan here so early in the morning?"

Tong Xiaohua shook her head, "I don’t know!"

A few minutes later, Yan Bo entered carrying a large bag of items.

Tong Xiaohua greeted him at the entrance hall and took the bag from him. Even before opening it, she could smell the wafting fragrance.

"I just had dim sum with a client at Mingxuan Hotel and thought the taste was pretty good, so I packed some snacks to bring over," he said.
