Chapter 908: Chapter 905: He Found a Treasure
That afternoon, while Tong Xiaohua was taking a nap, the acupuncturist her mother mentioned, Brother Du, came to take her pulse seriously. Throughout the pulsing process, Brother Du wore a solemn expression.
"Wei Yao, the issue you had before has indeed been alleviated by the surgery, but the surgery also severely depleted your vital energy. In the next year or two, you should try to avoid overworking yourself."
Tong’s mother, Shen Weiyao, nodded her head in agreement, showing little surprise or dismay. After all, she had lived with her body for dozens of years and was well aware of its condition.
After the examination, Shen Weiyao was left to rest in the bedroom, while the eldest of the Tong family accompanied Brother Du to walk out of the courtyard.
"Eldest, if possible, you should take Wei Yao to a peaceful place to recuperate. After all, this is a place filled with worldly noise, not conducive to healing."
The eldest of the Tong family had considered Brother Du’s words before, but Shen Weiyao always had her precious daughter on her mind and was reluctant to move away from this place.
"I’ll talk to her about it slowly. She always feels that she wants to take each day as it comes and spend as much time as possible with Xiao Hua."
Even a person as fearless as the eldest of the Tong family was very cautious whenever this issue came up.
Those familiar with him knew that ever since he met Shen Weiyao in his twenties, he had been utterly smitten, and then when his precious daughter was born, the number of people who could completely captivate him grew by one.
"Eldest, I think you should really talk to Xiao Hua. It’s not fair to her to keep her in the dark about this," said Brother Du, disagreeing with the couple’s decision to remain tight-lipped about the illness.
"Xiao Hua is no longer a little girl. She has the responsibility and the courage to take it on. Telling her is no scarier than keeping it from her."
The eldest of the Tong family was silent for a long time before finally responding, "I’ll think about it..."
Tong Xiaohua’s nap that afternoon was a bit deep, and by the time she woke up, the evening shadows had already begun to darken the sky outside the window.
Moving to the window, she pushed it open and saw the morning glory vines that had climbed up the big tree outside, dotted with blue and white flowers.
With her hands on the windowsill, Tong Xiaohua leapt nimbly, jumping neatly into the garden outside the window, and then ran over to the big tree. She reached up to pick a handful of blue and white flowers, holding them in her arms as she ran to her parents’ bedroom and knocked on the window.
After a while, the curtains inside opened and her mother, clad in a coat, looked out to see her daughter. Her face lit up with a radiant smile, and she hurriedly opened the window.
"Girl, what did you run outside for again?"
Tong Xiaohua extended her hands, which had been hiding the flowers behind her back, "Mom, for you!"
Her mother’s face was full of smiles as she leaned down to accept the flowers, "So beautiful, thank you!"
Then, seeing Tong Xiaohua standing barefoot on the grass, she quickly tugged at her hand, "You girl, running around barefoot again, come inside and put on shoes, it’s cold outside."
Tong Xiaohua giggled and, propping herself on the windowsill, zipped from the outside in through the window.
Her mother sighed helplessly and quickly got a pair of slippers to put on her daughter’s feet, bending down to help her into them.
You talk about getting married, but you’re still like a child."
Tong Xiaohua smiled warmly as she watched her mother crouching down to help her put on shoes, feeling as cozy as if she had returned to the warmth of her childhood when her mother used to scold and look after her.
"Mom, didn’t I say it? I won’t marry out; whoever wants to marry me shall move in with us."
At this point, Tong Xiaohua was still too young and took too much for granted.
Her mother looked up at her and shook her head helplessly again.
"I always feel that Xiao Yan has picked up a handful of trouble."
Tong Xiaohua immediately retorted, "He has found a treasure, the treasure of mom and dad."
Her mother clicked her tongue twice and stopped arguing with her, finished helping her with her shoes, and leaned on her knee as she stood up.
Her body had not fully straightened before a wave of dizziness hit. Tong Xiaohua’s mother swayed, and luckily, Tong Xiaohua, with quick reflexes, grabbed her arm and yanked her up.
"Mom, are you okay?"
Pulling her into an embrace, Tong Xiaohua asked anxiously, leaning in to closely examine her mother’s complexion.
Shen Weiyao’s face was pale, and she closed her eyes briefly. When she opened them, she met her daughter’s worried gaze and raised her hand to touch her face.
"Silly girl, Mom’s fine."
Even with her usually carefree nature, Tong Xiaohua could vaguely sense that something was not quite right with her mother.
After dinner, she and Tong Lao Da went out patrolling together. In the car, she couldn’t hold back and asked Tong Lao Da.
"Dad, is Mom sick?"
Tong Lao Da glanced at her warily and denied flatly, "Who told you that? That’s not true."
With a grave expression, Tong Xiaohua stared unblinkingly at Tong Lao Da, as if trying to discern whether he was lying.
"Nobody said anything. It’s just that Mom’s complexion looks really off. At first, I thought she was just jet-lagged, but how many days has it been? This evening, she almost fainted!"
"What? Your mom almost fainted? Why didn’t she tell me?"
Tong Lao Da suddenly raised his voice in a question, startling Tong Xiaohua.
"Mom didn’t tell you?" Tong Xiaohua’s doubt deepened.
Tong Lao Da shook his head, urgently glanced out the window, then turned to Tong Xiaohua and said, "Xiao Hua, I can’t accompany you. You’ll meet up with Ah Ming in a bit, have Ah Ming go with you to patrol."
Before Tong Xiaohua could say anything, Tong Lao Da had already leaned over to the driver’s seat, "Xiao Yang, pull over up ahead, I’ll get off."
"Dad..." Tong Xiaohua wanted to ask more, but seeing that Tong Lao Da’s mind was clearly elsewhere, anxiously surveying the traffic outside, she forcibly swallowed the words she was about to say.
Tong Lao Da hurried off the car and squeezed into the bodyguard’s vehicle behind. Tong Xiaohua, sitting in the car, turned to watch as the vehicle carrying Tong Lao Da merged into the stream of traffic, her unease growing like a snowball rolling downhill.
That evening, Tong Xiaohua seemed somewhat distracted.
"Xiao Hua, is something the matter?" Qin Ming rarely saw Tong Xiaohua like this and asked with great concern.
"Nothing..." Tong Xiaohua shook her head.
She wanted to ask Qin Ming about her mother’s condition, but then thought if her parents wanted to keep it from her, it was certain she wouldn’t get anything out of Uncle Ming either.
"Did you have a fight with Young Master Yan Bo?" Qin Ming teased with a smile.
In his view, for someone Tong Xiaohua’s age, probably only romance could make her this sentimental.
Tong Xiaohua still shook her head. Someone like Yan Bo, unless she went too far, probably wouldn’t argue with her, right?
Though Tong Xiaohua denied it, Qin Ming was still convinced that the girl had argued with Yan Bo, which was why she was restless all evening.
Accordingly, he deliberately steered clear of mentioning Yan Bo afterward, whereas normally, Qin Ming quite enjoyed teasing Tong Xiaohua about him.
Since Tong Lao Da returned, those previously simmering undercurrents within the Tong family seemed, somehow, to have calmed down again.
It seemed they were still more wary of Tong Lao Da. As for Tong Xiaohua, the new head of the household, it appeared she still had much work to do.
