Chapter 726 - What is the truth?
Chapter 726: Chapter 726 - What is the truth?
After Zhu Qianying finished speaking, she exchanged a glance with Yan Bo. If their speculation was indeed true, then, from this point onwards, perhaps there would be even more unpredictable events unfolding.
After all, their child was out in the open, and their enemy was in the shadows. How many people, like this little boy, were unknowingly being used?
Apart from this young boy, were there any others?
The more Zhu Qianying thought about it, the more she felt a chill run down her spine.
Yan Bo seemed to notice her internal fear. He patted the back of her hand, attempting to comfort her.
"It’s okay, we should be able to find the uncle this boy mentioned."
Zhu Qianying wasn’t so sure, "How can we find him among so many people?"
Yan Bo confidently replied, "Silly goose, there must be surveillance cameras around the school gate and the nearby main roads. Even if this boy refuses to tell us who his uncle is or where he lives, we have plenty of ways to find him."
Yan Bo was a man of action. Since this matter pertained to the safety of his precious son, he immediately called the principal to get access to the school gate’s surveillance footage over the past couple of months.
The principal was still in a state of fear. This time, the near-disaster involved Yan Bo’s son. If it were the child of any ordinary family, it would have been terrifying already.
Now that Yan Bo seemed to have no intention of squarely blaming him, he felt as though he had dodged a bullet.
So, when Yan Bo said he wanted to view the surveillance footage, the principal quickly replied, "Okay, okay, no problem. I will return to the office right away to prepare."
Yan Bo didn’t waste any time on pleasantries and hung up the phone right away.
As for the principal, he would deal with him after he found out the truth and identified the perpetrator. Unless the principal wasn’t at fault, he won’t be adding any undeserved blame.
"Ying’er, you don’t have to wait for me tonight. Go to bed early. Ke Kai and I are going to take a trip to the school."
Just as Yan Bo was about to step out of the house after getting dressed, Zhu Qianying suddenly remembered something that everyone seemed to have overlooked.
"Yan Bo, I just thought of something strange. That kid, being an orphan, should be going to a school run by the welfare institute, or a public school, right? The tuition at our baby boy’s school isn’t cheap, it’s highly unlikely that the welfare institute can afford it, right?"
Upon hearing this, Yan Bo also felt that something was amiss. Conveniently, Yan Bo’s grandfather was still in the living room reading a magazine. Zhu Qianying nudged Yan Bo, "Go to the school to review the surveillance footage. I’ll talk to dad about what we just discussed."
Yan Bo gave a nod of agreement, pecked her forehead, touched her face and specifically warned her, "Go to sleep early, don’t wait for me. I might end up staying up until dawn."
Zhu Qianying nodded her head, stood on her tiptoes, and kissed his lips, "Okay, I got it. If you’re not back by twelve, I’ll go to sleep first."
After seeing Yan Bo out, Zhu Qianying went back to the living room to discuss the issue of tuition fees with Yan Bo’s grandfather, who also seemed taken aback by this revelation.
"How could we forget such an important matter?"
Afterwards, he immediately picked up the phone and called the dean of the welfare institute again. As soon as the call was connected, he got straight to the point.
"Dean, I’d like to know who’s paying the boy’s school fees? Is it the welfare institute?"
Without even thinking, the dean replied, "Mr. Yan, back then, we received an anonymous donation specifically marked for Xiao Hai’s tuition, and the school was also specified. When we took Xiao Hai for school registration, we found that the amount was indeed the same as the donation."
After pondering for a moment, Yan Bo asked, "It was anonymous? Could you please send me the details of that donation? I want to investigate the source of this money."
For the dean of the welfare institute, tracing the origin of this money could be tough. However, for Yan Bo, it would be a cakewalk.
Only at this moment did the dean seem a bit worried, "Mr. Yan, you’re not suggesting that Xiao Hai has been involved in some kind of money laundering scandal, are you?"
"Don’t worry, there’s no such thing."
Although he was saying this, both Yan Bo and Zhu Qianying believed that this boy, Xiao Hai, was very likely involved in the incident with their son.
It could even be said that he played a very significant role in it. As to what actually transpired, perhaps they would have to wait for their son to recount what happened, or Xiao Hai to disclose it before the truth would be revealed.
Zhu Qianying sat with Yan Bo in the living room, waiting for the dean’s call. After about half an hour, the dean sent all the details related to the donation to Yan Bo’s email.
After Yan Bo had a look at the information and checked the time, he turned to Zhu Qianying and said, "Ying’er, it’s late. You should get some sleep. I’ll have someone investigate the source of this money first thing tomorrow morning."
Being constantly urged to go to bed, Zhu Qianying obediently got up, took a shower, and lied in bed, using her iPad to check out information related to the upcoming International Gourmet Fair her mother would be attending.
Then, she noticed the Quiet Restaurant and her mother’s names on the participant list on the main page of the Gourmet Fair.
It seemed her mother would be participating in the Gourmet Fair in three days. She wondered whether she should arrange a meeting between her mother and her son before her departure for the fair.
If they were to meet, how would they explain the scars on their son’s face? Regardless of how they told it, her mother would likely force out the truth.
So, would the knowledge of her grandson being threatened affect her mother’s performance in the competition?
If they didn’t meet, her mother, who adored her grandson, would definitely be anxious, which in turn could still affect her performance in the competition.
Zhu Qianying, who had difficulty making a decision, thought of discussing it with Yan Bo when he returns.
In the meantime, Yan Bo and Ke Kai had been staying in the principal’s office for several hours.
They were prepared if they couldn’t find any useful videos at the school, they would then retrieve surveillance footage from all intersections around the school from the Traffic Police Department and comb through it bit by bit.
Luckily, to their relief, at around two in the morning, Yan Bo and Ke Kai finally spotted a man who, from their class lineup, led a boy called Xiao Hai to a car.
The surveillance camera seemed to be a bit far from where the students were lining up, and the man was facing away from it. They weren’t able to see his face until Xiao Hai got into the car.
Even when he showed his face, because of the distance, it was still pretty blurry. When Ke Kai enlarged the footage, they were able to make out the facial features of the man.
"Is it him!?" Yan Bo and Ke Kai exclaimed simultaneously.
