Chapter 1096: Chapter 1093: Xiao Lizi and Baby Boy. Extra (54)

Old events from childhood, recounted by someone his own age but with the tone of an elder, made Yan Xu’s face flush, despite his usually thick skin.

However, Bai Lu wasn’t speaking idly. The young version of himself she mentioned was indeed the little boy who enjoyed his mother’s love while always yearning to grow strong and protect Mommy—a true reflection of his past self.

He coughed softly to hide his shock and the embarrassment of being seen through, "You have a really good memory..."

Bai Lu teased him with a smile, "Your memory is pretty good too... So, I sometimes doubt whether I might have offended you in the past!"

To this day, Yan Xu still couldn’t recall any memories of his childhood with Bai Lu.

But upon hearing her self-deprecating remark, he dismissed the idea without a second thought.

"How could that be! If you really had offended me, someone as vengeful as I am would remember you until death."

Bai Lu burst into laughter, "If I had known you were like this, I should have really offended you back then. Still, I’m very curious why you remember everything else but not me?"

After sipping some wine, Bai Lu asked more directly than usual.

After spending more time with Bai Lu, Yan Xu had pondered this question too.

"You and my family also said that we were very close and had deep feelings as children. Could it be something you said or did hurt me so much that my memory automatically blocked you out?"

Bai Lu rolled her eyes at him, "Wow, you’re using your confusion to frame me as an ungrateful woman—I protest."

As for why Yan Xu had specifically forgotten that part of his memory, perhaps there would never be an answer.

But neither Bai Lu nor Yan Xu was averse to discussing it.

Of course, both Bai Lu and Yan Xu felt it was a pity and regretful, but it seemed they had reached a consensus.

Whether Yan Xu ultimately regained that memory or not, it wouldn’t affect their current relationship.

They decided to leave the topic of amnesia behind, and Bai Lu couldn’t help being curious about the reasons behind Yan Xu’s insistence on staying at Jun Camp.

"I always hear my Mommy and Aunt Ying Zi say that you stayed at Jun Camp because of your grandfathers’ insistence. Is that true?"

She always felt that Yan Xu was a person with strong convictions and a fierce sense of self; if he didn’t like something himself, he wouldn’t force himself just to satisfy the wishes of his elders. After all, in this day and age, even if he performed very well at Jun Camp, he was not irreplaceable.

Yan Xu stared at the wine in her glass for a long while, then let out a long sigh, "I could really use a drink!"

Bai Lu deliberately brought the glass to his face, teasingly shaking it.

"Ding ding, Doctor Bai is online to remind Mr. Yan Xu that your body is still recovering and it’s not suitable for you to drink."

Yan Xu gave her an exasperated look, "I was just saying, not that I wanted to drink it!"

Bai Lu nodded approvingly, "Exactly! That’s why I’m letting you have a whiff, consider it a reward!"

Yan Xu was both annoyed and amused, "I’d rather not have such a reward."

Bai Lu nodded briskly, "Alright then, I’ll keep this reward on the account and make it up to you next time."

Yan Xu actually nodded, "I’ll remember that!"

When Bai Lu handed over an unwrapped lollipop, he took it and popped it into his mouth, smacking his lips once before immediately making a sour face, furrowing his brows.

"So sour! Bai Lu, did you do this on purpose to mess with me?"

Bai Lu looked innocent. "Sour? I think it tastes quite normal!"

As she spoke, she unwrapped a lollipop with the same taste as his, put it in her mouth, and smacked her lips a few times. "It’s very normal. Where is it sour? Try drinking some water, the taste buds will fully open, and the water will taste sweet and refreshing."

Following her suggestion, Yan Xu took a sip of water, and indeed, just as she said, a refreshing fruity sweetness mixed with the aftertaste of water spread through his mouth.

"The way you eat lollipops is strange, isn’t it? Or is it that you don’t actually like sweets?"

Bai Lu explained with a smile, "I love sweets, but the dentist warned me I can’t eat so much sugar anymore, so I tried switching to these pure fruit juice-derived candies that supposedly don’t damage teeth as much."

Yan Xu shook his head with a smile, "You’re the biggest loophole-finder of a doctor I know!"

Bai Lu chuckled. "What about doctors? Doctors are people too. We occasionally need to indulge our little whims and enjoy some small happiness. As for lofty ideals, they are often empty talk. We need to seize the pleasures and joys at hand to have the motivation to do those boring but meaningful tasks."

Yan Xu was somewhat surprised. "Do you find the things in your own field boring?"

Bai Lu nodded, "Sometimes, but I still find it more interesting most of the time."

Bai Lu thought that Yan Xu didn’t want to discuss the real reason he stayed at Jun Camp, choosing instead to talk about random things with her.

Little did she know, Yan Xu steered the conversation back himself.

"Actually, I feel the same way. The days in Jun Camp can occasionally feel dull and bland."

Bai Lu had always believed choosing to be a doctor was following her own heart’s desire, without going through too much strife or uncertainty.

But for Yan Xu, she always thought it was because of grand ambitions and a sense of responsibility.

"Yeah, so, I really admire you."

Yan Xu shook his head, "There’s nothing to admire. When I decided to stay in Jun Camp, it was because I felt I was not strong enough. At the very least, I wasn’t strong enough to protect my family and myself."

Bai Lu was taken aback. "How old were you then? And you set such high standards for yourself?"

Yan Xu fell silent for a while, then asked her, "Do you know about the time when I was a little over five years old and nearly lost my life being pushed into a pool?"

Bai Lu nodded. Although the incident occurred after Bai Lu had left the Yan Family, she had indeed heard about it from Mommy.

The situation then was extremely perilous, but fortunately, Yan Xu, even at his young age, was calmer and knew how to save himself better than his peers, allowing him to survive until the rescuers arrived.

"After I was rescued, it took a long time to fully recover. During that slow recovery period, I did a lot of thinking. It was that experience that made me see the reality clearly, that if I didn’t become strong, I would not even be able to protect myself, let alone my Mommy. So, when Great-Grandpa wanted me to return to Capital City and go to Jun Camp for training, even though my Mommy disagreed, I insisted on going."

Whether his family knew these reasons or not, Yan Xu wasn’t sure. After all, he had never personally mentioned it to Mommy or Daddy, because he feared that it would sadden them and make them feel guilty.

And tonight, despite not having consumed any wine, he felt the urge to speak truths as though he were drunk.

Perhaps it was because sitting beside him was Bai Lu, who gave him a sense of peace, so he naturally found himself sharing these old memories.
