Chapter 97: Jaegel[1]
Chapter 97: Jaegel[1]
"Do you know who I am?!"
His voice echoed into the void.
The Heretic didn’t react immediately. His eerie, lopsided gaze bored into Rex’s, unblinking, unshaken.
Rex continued, pressing forward.
"I am a Silvagold! You won’t be able to get away with this!" His voice hardened as he took a step forward, his body tense. "If you release me now, I might take pity on you. Your punishment will be lessened."
He spoke with all the confidence he could muster, using his family name as a weapon.
His father was the highest standing noble. The Holy Knights served the Church, but even they wouldn’t dare to ignore a Silvagold.
A Heretic wouldn’t risk angering such a powerful house, would he?
For a moment, silence stretched between them.
Then—
A deep, guttural chuckle filled the void.
It started off low, rumbling deep in the Heretic’s throat, before escalating into a loud, disturbing laugh.
His tongue slithered out with each laugh, throwing saliva everywhere. His entire body shook with amusement, his thin shoulders quivering under his coat.
Rex felt his stomach twist.
The Heretic suddenly clapped his hands together, shaking his head in sheer amusement.
"Ohhh, this is my favorite part." His voice dripped with sick pleasure. His fingers twitched as if relishing the moment.
"The best part about kidnapping a noble... is watching them squirm. Watching them try to use their family name like a shield. Like it actually means something here."
His bulging eye twitched as he took a slow, deliberate step forward.
Rex’s pulse quickened.
The Heretic grinned wider, his saliva-soaked tongue dragging over his bottom lip.
"But... you see... that won’t work."
He tilted his head, his grotesque face twisting into something even more unnerving.
"Not against me."
A sharp, sickening chill ran down Rex’s spine. His breath came out uneven, his hands instinctively curling into tight fists.
The heretic’s disturbing grin stretched wider as he took a slow step forward.
His thin, bony fingers twitched at his sides, his yellow, pus-filled eye gleaming with amusement.
Then, with a voice dripping with condescension, he finally spoke.
"My name is Jaegel."
His tongue slithered out for a brief moment before he retracted it, wiping away some of the drool that had accumulated on his chin.
"Listen well, little noble," he continued, his tone laced with mockery. "Don’t even think of resisting. And don’t you dare try to threaten me with your stupid family name."
Rex gritted his teeth, his fists clenching even tighter.
Jaegel let out a low chuckle, his hideous features twisting in amusement.
"I can already tell what you’re thinking. ’I’ll make my father send the Holy Knights after you! You’ll regret this!’" His voice rose in an exaggerated whine as he mimicked Rex mockingly.
Then his face darkened. His bulging eye twitched. "But that won’t happen."
Rex frowned, his heart pounding in his chest.
Jaegel took another step forward, his saliva-coated lips curling into a smirk. "Oh, we’re still in Lumeria, alright. But this... this is Willowbrook."
The name sent a strange chill down Rex’s spine.
Jaegel’s long tongue flicked out briefly before he continued. "An abandoned part of Lumeria... forgotten by the Holy Church. Our turf—the turf of heretics." His voice was laced with venomous pride. "And whether the Church likes it or not, there’s nothing they can do to us here."
Rex’s frown deepened. He had heard rumours about Willowbrook before, but he hadn’t expected it to be this bad.
According to the rumours, it was a forsaken village, long rumoured to be cursed and swarming with heretics.
The church didn’t even consider the village to be reclaimable, which was why they sent them here on this mission.
To find the root behind all the heretics, and then eradicate the village as a whole!
That meant, Jaegel’s words had some truth to them. There was a chance no one would come to save him.
His other teammates briefly came to his mind, but even he doubted they could find him in this strange dark place.
A part of him even doubted they’d make any attempt to.
Who was to say they weren’t rejoicing over his kidnapping right now, glad to finally be rid of him?
He swallowed hard, but his glare remained firm. He wouldn’t give this bastard the satisfaction of seeing him panic.
But Jaegel wasn’t finished. His disgusting grin widened further.
"Oh? What’s with that look? Still holding onto hope?" He let out a breathy chuckle. "Tch. Pathetic." His eye twitched again before he tilted his head mockingly.
"Here’s the thing, boy." His voice turned sharp, digging into Rex like a knife. "You’re not even important enough for the Silvagold family to care about."
The words struck like a thunderclap.
Rex’s body stiffened. His fists clenched so tightly his nails dug into his palms.
Jaegel’s grin widened. "Oh, don’t look so shocked. Did you really think I wouldn’t know?" His voice dripped with cruel amusement. "Did you think I wouldn’t learn about you before making my move?"
Rex remained silent, but his breathing had grown heavier.
Jaegel took a slow step forward, dragging out every word.
"You’re the useless one in your family, aren’t you?"
Rex’s vision turned red.
Jaegel’s disgusting laughter echoed through the void. "Ah... I hit a nerve, didn’t I?" He grinned maliciously, his saliva flying with every chuckle. "How does it feel? To know that even if you die here, your family won’t even blink?"
Rex’s entire body trembled, but this time, it wasn’t from fear.
It was rage.
That had always been a sensitive topic for him. He had spent his entire life being compared to his more talented siblings, being overlooked by his father, and now this ugly, disgusting heretic had the audacity to bring it up?
The fear he had felt before vanished.
All that remained was pure, unfiltered fury.
But Jaegel still wasn’t done.
"Why would the Silvagold family try to rescue... a failure like you?!" His voice rose with mock incredulity. "Tell me!"
He threw his head back in a loud, wet chuckle, his long tongue flailing as he laughed.
Rex’s knuckles turned white from how hard he clenched his fists.
Then, finally, he snapped.
"Enough." His voice was low, filled with barely restrained fury.
Jaegel’s laughter halted, his bulging eye twitching as he stared at him.
"It doesn’t matter anymore." Rex’s glare was like a blade. "Whether you’re a heretic or not..."
He stepped forward, his white gloves shining with power. "I’m going to punch your disgusting face into a pulp!"
Jaegel blinked in surprise. Then, his lips curled into a smirk.
"Come and try, boy."
