Chapter 94: Ugly man in the mist

Chapter 94: Ugly man in the mist

He glanced at the two girls briefly.

His golden eyes flickered, flashing with a strange glint.

Compared to the two of them, he wasn’t feeling any pressure.

It was probably because he also had divinity, due to his status as a divine incubus, but he wasn’t complaining.

Then, without saying a word, he shifted his focus back to Emma.

She hadn’t moved an inch.

Her entire attention was locked onto the golden bug hovering before her, its tiny wings beating in slow, controlled motions.

She was staring at it, her eyes reflecting its divine glow.

At first glance, she looked entranced—as if caught in some kind of spell.

But Liam knew better.

’She’s not in a trance,’ he thought.

Something about the way her pupils shifted told him she was still aware of her surroundings.

Instead, she was doing something else entirely.

’They’re... communicating.’

Somehow, without speaking a single word, Emma and the bug were having a conversation.

It wasn’t magic.

It wasn’t telepathy.

It was something deeper.

Liam could feel it.

And before he could analyze it further—

Emma’s lips suddenly parted.

Her voice was calm, yet commanding.

"Show me, Uti. Show me what really happened here."

The moment she spoke, the air trembled.

The golden bug—Uti—flapped its wings once, and immediately—

Golden dots appeared around them.

At first, they were small, like glowing fireflies in the air.

Then, they rapidly multiplied, swirling together until they formed a larger shape.

Within seconds, the golden dust merged, twisting and shifting—

Until it created a clear, three-dimensional figure.

A hologram.

Liam’s eyes narrowed as he watched the glowing particles take form.

The shape became more defined, gradually molding itself into a human silhouette.

At first, it was just a rough outline—

But then, the details sharpened.

Hair.

Facial features.

Clothing.

Liam’s expression darkened as he recognized who it was.

Rex.

The hologram figure looked exactly like him.

It wasn’t a rough sketch or a blurred projection.

It was so precise, so realistic, that it captured even the smallest details.

His posture.

His height.

The slight curl at the end of his hair.

’This isn’t just an illusion,’ Liam thought.

It was too perfect.

Too accurate.

Like a high-level hologram, created by the best engineers in the world.

It was a replay of what exactly happened in this place yesterday night.

Liam was impressed—

But he remained silent, simply watching as the scene played out.

The hologram Rex paced back and forth, his expression twisted in anger.

His movements were fluid, almost identical to how the real Rex moved.

His face twitched, his fingers curling into tight fists.

Then, suddenly—

He ripped off his shirt and flung it toward the bed.

The hologram shirt landed at the corner of the bed, resting in the exact same position they had found it earlier.

Liam’s gaze flickered.

’So this is what really happened before we came in.’

He had already suspected Rex was in some kind of rage before he disappeared.

But seeing it with his own eyes made it all the more real.

The hologram Rex continued to pace, mumbling words—

But no sound came out.

It was like watching a silent film.

And then—

Something changed.

A new set of golden particles gathered beneath Rex’s feet.

At first, they looked like mere specks of dust.

But then, they expanded.

They shifted.

They grew.

Within seconds, the golden dust morphed into something else.

A mist.

It wasn’t just any mist.

It was thick, almost tangible, moving unnaturally beneath Rex’s shadow.

Liam felt a strange chill crawl up his spine.

His instincts screamed that something was wrong.

And by the time hologram Rex noticed it—

It was too late.

The mist exploded outward, stretching until it completely covered his shadow.

Rex froze.

For the first time, his anger vanished, replaced by something else.

Confusion.

And then—

Pure, unfiltered terror.

His mouth opened, as if to scream—

But before any sound could escape—

His body was suddenly yanked downward.

Liam’s eyes widened slightly.

One second, Rex was standing firmly on the ground.

The next, he was sinking.

His legs were the first to go.

Then his waist.

Then his torso.

All the while, his face was twisted in a horrified expression.

His hands clawed at the air, trying to grab onto something, anything that could help but him back up.

But there was nothing to hold onto.

The mist swallowed him whole.

And in the blink of an eye—

Rex was gone.

The shadow mist slowly retracted, its form twisting as it sank back into the ground.

Like it had never been there in the first place.

Like nothing had happened.

Silence filled the room.

A cold, heavy silence.

And then—

"Stop it right there!"

Emma’s voice shattered the quiet.

She suddenly pointed at the mist hologram, her expression sharp and focused.

Immediately—

The projection froze.

The golden mist that was about to fully sink into the ground came to an abrupt halt.

For the first time since the vision began—

The scene was paused.

Emma’s gaze sharpened, her fingers twitching slightly.

There was a fire in her eyes—

A determination that wasn’t there before.

Liam remained silent, but his thoughts were racing.

’So this is how he disappeared...’ He mumbled inwardly, his expression turning dark.

It seemed like his fear was right, Rex had indeed been kidnapped by a heretic.

He recognised that mist anywhere, as it was something he experienced when fighting with Eva.

The power of darkness, only possessed by those called heretics.

But still, he wondered, where did the mist take Rex?

While he was staring at the frozen holographic mist, a dull figure deep within it suddenly caught his eyes.

’Is that—’

"Zoom in!" Emma’s sharp voice cut his thoughts, and his brows furrowed.

The golden bug flashed its wings once more, and the mist in front of them slowly enlarged.

It was practically zooming in, almost like a computer screen being enhanced.

The figure within the mist became clearer.

More defined.

And then—

Liam’s expression darkened.

What appeared before them was an ugly, grotesque face.

It belonged to a man.

His head was bald, completely smooth, without a single trace of hair.

His tongue hung out of his mouth—long, thin, and dripping with saliva.

The liquid pooled at the edge of his lips, stretching into thin, slimy threads.

His left eye was nearly twice as large as his right, bulging unnaturally.

Thin veins crawled around the surface of the eye, looking almost infected.

At the corners of it, gooey particles had gathered, clinging like dried pus.

His right eye was smaller, but it was just as unsettling—filled with a cold, dead stare.

They couldn’t see features like his hair color or skin tone, but they didn’t need to.

Because no one could forget an ugly face like that.

A heavy silence settled in the air.

Then—

"So that’s him." Emma muttered, her voice dripping with anger.

Liam’s brows rose slightly, surprised at the sharp venom in her tone.

He hadn’t seen this side of her before.

But she wasn’t done.

Her gaze remained locked on the hologram, her expression turning colder.

"Uti, scan his magic," she ordered. "Learn it."

The golden bug buzzed its wings lightly in response.

Liam’s eyes narrowed.

Learn it?

He wasn’t entirely sure what she meant—

But judging from the tone of her voice, he could make a guess.

Did she mean...

That Uti would now be able to recognize this man’s mana wherever he was?

If that was the case—

That was a terrifying ability.

To be able to track a person’s magical signature just by seeing them once...

Liam’s lips pressed into a thin line.

’Guess divine creatures really have... strange powers.’

It was ironic given his true identity, but the divine creature didn’t react to his thoughts.

It simply flapped its wings, floating calmly around Emma.

She turned back to it, falling into what seemed like another trance.

Her eyes glazed over, her expression becoming still—

But Liam could tell.

This wasn’t a trance.

Just like before, she was communicating with Uti.

She could somehow transfer her intent directly into her summons.

It was a frightening level of control.

And then—

Her eyes widened.

Her body jerked backward, stumbling slightly.

Her fists clenched.

And then, through gritted teeth—

"A... heretic."

She spat the word out like venom, her hands trembling.

Before Liam could react—

The holographic image on the ground began to disintegrate.

The golden particles that had formed the projection shattered, breaking apart into countless tiny specs of light.

They floated upwards, humming softly—

Before vanishing into nothingness.

For a moment, the room fell silent.

The only thing left was the soft hum of Uti’s wings, still floating around Emma.

It didn’t vanish.

Not yet.

By now, the divine pressure that had weighed down the room had lessened.

Finally—

The two girls who had been kneeling could breathe again.

Cynthia let out a sharp gasp, sucking in air as if she had been drowning.

Lela followed suit, her hands trembling as she wiped sweat from her brow.

Both of them slowly rose to their feet, their legs wobbling slightly from exhaustion.

They were panting heavily.

Their faces were pale, and their bodies were soaked in sweat.

Their clothes clung tightly to their skin, damp and sticky.

"That... was horrible." Lela muttered, clicking her tongue in annoyance.

They were supposed to be carrying out the investigation together, but throughout, she was forced to stay on her knees.

It felt... insulting.

’I can’t even stand when her blessing is fully active, I’m I really... that weak?’ She thought, turning her gaze to Emma.
