Cucking The Demon King -
Chapter 68: Tell me
Chapter 68: Tell me
A silence stretched between them.
Liam stood in the doorway, staring at the woman before him.
Evangeline. It had been a long time since he last saw her, but she looked just as he remembered—golden blonde hair cascading over her shoulders, striking black eyes that gleamed with warmth and mischief.
She had always been beautiful, but now, there was a certain maturity to her features, a subtle elegance that made her seem even more radiant.
Just as he was about to say something, Evangeline suddenly stepped forward and grabbed his cheeks.
She had to raise her legs slightly due to the height difference between them, but she didn’t seem to care.
"H-Hey!" Liam protested, his voice muffled as she pulled at his face.
"Wow, is this really the person I know." she huffed, stretching his cheeks mercilessly. "Look at you. You’ve really changed, huh?"
Liam tried pushing her away, but her grip was annoyingly firm.
Even though he had already gotten a lot stronger compared to before, he still couldn’t pull her hands away from his cheeks for some reason.
’What kind of strength... does she have?’ He thought, looking down at the woman in annoyance.
"I’m not a kid anymore, Evangeline!" he grumbled.
Evangeline chuckled, finally releasing his face. "Well, you look different, but you still whine the same way."
She gave him another look, her eyes lingering on his sharp jawline and well-built frame. "You’ve grown taller... and honestly, I hate to admit it, but you’re kinda handsome now."
Liam smirked, rubbing his sore cheeks. "Only kinda?"
He didn’t know what kind of grip Evangeline had, but it felt like his cheeks had been pulled by a gorilla.
However, he dared not say that to her, unless he wanted to attract more trouble for himself.
She rolled her eyes, making a small punch with her fingers. "Yes, just a little bit. Don’t get cocky."
Without waiting for an invitation, she stepped past him into the room. "Ah... it’s cleaner than I expected."
She plopped down on his bed, looking around as if inspecting his living space.
Liam leaned against the doorframe. "What’s that supposed to mean?"
Evangeline smirked. "Well, the last time I was here, your room was like a war zone. Clothes everywhere, books piled up, a mess of notes all over the floor... But now?" She gestured around. "It’s actually livable."
Liam chuckled. "I like to keep things tidy."
The only reason his room was always rough then was because he was usually busy with assignments and reading, most that weren’t even for him.
Rex and his gang, and even some students in the dormitory always packed their assignments for him to do, and not doing them would mean hell for him.
In order to maintain his little peace, he would have to read extensively, writing different answers for each of the homework.
The instructors would easily get it was copied work if he wrote the same thing for all of them, and since Rex would never get punished, he was the only one that would suffer the consequence.
He could still remember the last time something like that happened, and it sent a chill down his spine.
He turned back to Evangeline, letting out a low chuckle.
"And besides, there’s only a two-year gap between us. Don’t talk like you’re some wise elder... you’re not." He said, smirking.
Evangeline gasped dramatically. "Oh really, why don’t I show you what this ’wise elder’ can do?"
Before Liam could react, she suddenly pounced on him.
"You’ll always be a kid to me, Liam. And no matter how much you grow, you’ll never escape this!"
Her fingers moved swiftly, aiming for his sides.
Liam’s eyes widened. "Wait, no—"
He already knew what was coming, and before she could tickle him, he grabbed her wrists, spun her around, and pinned her hands to the bed.
Evangeline blinked, realizing the sudden change in position.
She was now lying beneath him, her hands restrained by his grip. Liam was leaning over her, his red eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, she felt something unfamiliar stir within her.
She had always known Liam as the scrawny boy who followed her around, the little brother figure she teased and protected. But now... Now he was looking at her with an intensity that made her heart race.
The air between them thickened.
Her eyes flickered to his lips before she realized what she was doing.
Flustered, she acted on impulse—raising her leg and kicking him squarely in the stomach.
"Ugh—!"
Liam let go of her, falling backward onto the bed.
Evangeline quickly sat up, crossing her arms with a smirk. "See? You’re still a little kid."
However, her face was flushed and her breathing heavier than before.
Liam groaned, rubbing his stomach. He shot her an annoyed glare. "Was that necessary?"
She chuckled mockingly. "It was completely necessary."
They continued their playful banter for a little while longer, laughing and teasing each other as if no time had passed. But eventually, the mood between them shifted again—this time into something more serious.
Evangeline leaned back on her hands, studying Liam’s face.
"You’ve changed a lot..." She murmured, her voice softer now. "I still remember when you were this scrawny twig running around, trying to act tough. And now, look at you."
She could barely even recognise him, it was almost like he was a completely different person.
Liam smirked. "I take that as a compliment."
She shook her head with a small smile. "It is."
A brief silence.
Then, Evangeline asked, "How’s school? Are you doing okay?"
Liam nodded. "I’m fine."
She watched him carefully, as if trying to see through his words. "And... the bullying?"
Liam’s expression didn’t change, but there was a glint in his eyes. "That doesn’t happen anymore."
Evangeline felt something tighten in her chest. A single tear pooled at the corner of her eye, but before it could fall, she quickly wiped it away.
But Liam had already seen it.
A mix of emotions swirled within him, but he said nothing.
She had always known.
Even back then, when everyone else ignored his suffering, Evangeline was one of the few people who cared. But despite all her efforts, there was little she could do.
She was his only sister—even if they weren’t related by blood.
Her mother, Rena Wilshere, had found Liam when he was just a child, abandoned in front of their orphanage with nothing but the clothes on his back. She took him in, fed him, gave him a place to stay. Treated him like her own son.
But Liam’s life at the orphanage was far from easy.
The other children bullied him for being weak. Some felt he was the one most favoured by Rena, and out of jealously, they bullied him.
And when it was discovered that he didn’t awaken a blessing, things only got worse.
Even after he enrolled in the academy, the torment followed him.
But Evangeline and her mother could barely do little to help.
Their orphanage was small, barely surviving on donations. And no matter how much she wanted to protect Liam, she had no real power.
Unlike him, she had awakened a blessing—a common-grade healing ability. But it was weak, not enough to get her into the Holy Knights.
Instead, she spent most of her time at the orphanage, using her blessing to heal the children there.
She clenched her fists, trying to bury those memories.
"...I’m glad," she finally said. "That you’re not suffering anymore."
Liam simply nodded.
She took a deep breath, then changed the subject.
"So... the upcoming mission. Are you okay with it?"
Liam smirked. "I’m not the weak boy I was before."
Evangeline smiled, her head nodding slightly. "Yeah. I can see that."
Though a part of her wanted to ask him how he changed so suddenly, within such a short time at that, she felt it was best to remain quiet.
The last thing she wanted to do was open up his old wounds, which she knew were quite terrible.
For a moment, silence reigned between them, and it felt like everything was okay.
Then, Liam suddenly asked, "How’s Mrs Wilshere? How’s the orphanage?"
The question caught Evangeline off guard.
Her lips parted slightly, then closed.
No words came out.
She lowered her gaze, gripping the bedsheet as an uneasy silence settled between them.
Liam narrowed his eyes.
Something was wrong.
"Evangeline, answer me." He said, his voice turning serious.
Even though every thing that happened in the orphanage didn’t exactly happen to him, but to the original Liam, he still had the memories.
He felt a deep connection to it, mainly because of Mrs Wilshere and her daughter, Evangeline, who have been so kind to him.
Despite the bullying he suffering at the orphanage, he didn’t wish for it to collapse, neither did he wish for any bad thing to happen to it.
But from Evangeline’s reaction, he could tell that something bad had happened.
Though Evangeline didn’t want to tell him, she was very bad at lying or keeping, so he could easily tell based on her reactions alone.
