Chapter 29: Tendrils of Darkness

He continued toying with the fire ball above his palm, moving it up and down, and then sideways.

His eyes shone with excitement, like a little child that had just gotten his first toy.

A part of him wished there was a target in front of him, that he could test his new skill on.

But unfortunately, he was in the academy’s dormitory, and damaging any of its facility would bring serious trouble to him.

It simply wasn’t worth the risk.

’But then... how do I explain to the academy that I somehow got a fire blessing at the age of nineteen?’ He thought, clicking his tongue in annoyance.

Though there were indeed other holy academies other than light, they were all far away from Lumeria, the kingdom he lived.

The holy fire academy for an example, was located in a northern continent called Sertia, which was one of the smallest continents in this world.

Life there was very different from Lumeria, as the main god they worshipped was the god of fire, who bestowed upon them blessings of the fire element.

Although there were cases where someone awakened a blessing different from the one worshipped by those around him, it was extremely rare.

As for a case where someone awakened a blessing at the late age of nineteen, that was practically impossible.

Blessings were usually awakened during the age of ten to thirteen, though there were some cases where it is delayed until the age of fourteen.

From fifteen upwards, it was completely impossible to naturally awaken a blessing.

If it got to that stage, the child would then be taken to the church, so he could be bestowed one directly through the holy priests.

However, blessings gotten through this method were usually weak, as over eighty percent of them would end up with a common rank blessing.

If there were lucky enough, they could get a rare rank, but it would be quite weak compared to others at the same rank.

But since blessings were so respected in the kingdom, that those without it were seriously discriminated against, most preferred to end up with a common rank rather than none.

Liam could remember from his memories that he had also been taken to a church, but unfortunately, he failed to awaken even a common rank blessing.

"Hah..." He sighed, remembering how heartbroken he was as he walked out of the church that day.

’I guess it doesn’t really matter...’ He thought, snuffing out the fireball above his palm with a simple thought.

The wisps of smoke left by the skill slowly rose up, before vanishing into thin air.

A notification suddenly flashed across his eyes, and his brows furrowed slightly.

’As expected, using skills consumes my energy.’ He thought, nodding his head subtly.

He then summoned the spins tab back in front of him, his eyes locking on the last of the three spins he could purchase.

’Should I really?’ He thought, his brows creasing in confusion.

Though he was curious about what kind of reward he could gain from the spin, he also felt a bit reluctant due to the huge amount of lust points needed to purchase it.

The price of the spin was a hundred thousand, which was nearly half of the total he had currently.

But after giving it some thought, he felt like it was worth it.

After all, he could always acquire more lust points simply by meeting with more women, and also performing some ’unholy’ acts with them.

His lips curled into a sinister smirk at mere thought of it, unable to hold back his perverted thoughts.

Besides, his lust points were meant to be spent, in order for him to get stronger, so holding onto them was just dumb.

’Epic spin.’ He thought, finally clicking on the spin.

A small silver box immediately appeared in front of him, spinning for a few seconds before popping open.

It seemed like the colour of the box changed based on the rank of the spin.

The common rank spins were copper, the rare rank was bronze while the epic rank was silver.

Based on these, he could guess that the legendary spin box would be gold in colour, but unfortunately, he didn’t have enough lust points to unlock it... yet.

Nonetheless, he had to make do with what he had.

Above the silver box, there was a highlighted notification, displaying the reward he gained.

Liam’s eyes widened in shock as he stared at the skill’s description.

The skill’s description was white vague, but he easily understood what it meant.

However, that wasn’t what shocked him about the skill, instead, it was the elemental nature of the skill—Darkness.

’A darkness related skill...’ Liam mumbled inwardly, his brows furrowing slightly.

Though humans didn’t know the truth about the demons hierarchy, they believed all demons worship the god of darkness and shadow, an extremely evil god compared to their benevolent goddess of light.

In return, they gained blessings of darkness or shadow, two elements which the church saw as baleful and corrupt.

Those two elements had the ability to directly attack a person’s soul or will, tainting it with their corruption.

Nonetheless, there were humans who gave in to the corruption, forsaking their original god and choosing to serve the god of darkness.

Humans like that were called heretics, and if any of them were caught, they would be condemned to death... publicly.

If the academy, or even worse, the holy church found out he could use a darkness skill, they would immediately put him to death, thinking that he was a heretic.

’That would be really... troublesome.’ Liam thought, clicking his tongue.

’I’ll just have to get stronger, so I would be able to live freely, without worrying about any dumb law!’ He thought, chuckling to himself.

[That’s right. But I didn’t expect you to get this skill... I’m a bit surprised.]
