Chapter 109: Order [2]

"Akamir."

Nayomi’s voice echoed from behind him.

"The food is poisoned."

Akamir didn’t even flinch at her words.

He leaned back, casting a quick glance over the dishes lined in front of him.

All of them were beautifully presented, like made by the best chef out there.

Yet...

’So this is why he called me,’ he thought. ’To give me an end—’

"Aldric’s food is also poisoned," Nayomi said, taking him by surprise. "So is Darvin’s food."

Akamir rubbed his eyebrow with his thumb as he looked at Prince Lucien.

The boy wasn’t even trying to hide the grin on his face.

’Oh, you stupid child,’

Akamir thought as he looked at him with nothing except pity.

’You really wanted to die so badly.’

Akamir could have just told everyone that the food was poisoned and the prince would be fucked.

Even though he didn’t have any proof, his words would have definitely created a huge effect in his plans.

But...

’I don’t want Aldric alive as well,’ he thought, glancing at the king who gulped down his food. ’He is far more dangerous than his son.’

Akamir glanced at Nayomi as if asking her for more information.

Nayomi hovered near his shoulder, invisible to the others.

"It’s not strong poison," she whispered. "Won’t kill you instantly, but will chip down your mana core slowly."

"A way to cure it?" he asked, keeping his voice barely audible.

"Yes," she replied softly. "There is a potion in my palace that can help with it."

Akamir nodded silently.

Aldric was chewing a piece of meat, wine trickling down his chin like blood.

He looked completely unfazed, either too drunk or too mad to care.

Lucien was eating his food as well, and so were the others.

Akamir glanced at Balkri. ’Is he with Lucien now?’

It could be possible, and Akamir wasn’t happy with it.

’Inara barely has any support and this stupid prince is getting everything.’

"Not hungry?" Lucien asked suddenly, his mouth full. "Come now, Asher. You haven’t touched a thing."

"I was admiring it," Akamir said. "Would be a shame to waste such effort."

"Then eat," the prince smiled. "Let’s not be rude."

Akamir raised his fork, spearing a thin slice of the duck.

"Don’t worry," Nayomi said, floating close by. "I would die if you die too."

’Is she trying to say she really has a cure?’

Akamir wondered as he took a bite of the food.

Surprisingly, there was nothing out of place.

The food was definitely delicious.

He chewed slowly, letting the flavors melt on his tongue.

And when he swallowed, Lucien couldn’t hide the smile on his face.

’He seems more happy by eliminating me than his own father.’

That told him how much he desired her more than anything.

And Akamir didn’t like that one bit.

’I would give you the most painful death, Lucien.’

---

It took them almost a quarter of an hour to eat all of their food.

As the maids took away the used plates, Akamir glanced at Aldric.

Aldric fished around his mouth with a golden toothpick, lounging back in his chair like a lion after a kill.

His robes had loosened even more, revealing a faded scar running across his collarbone.

"Damn duck," he muttered, picking. "Always gets stuck between the back ones."

One of the maids stepped forward to pour him more wine, but Aldric waved her off.

"No more," he said. "I’m already half in the clouds."

The others were as silent as before, keeping themselves in check.

Lucien looked the most relaxed of all.

He leaned back in his chair, arms stretched as if this was his victory feast already.

"Quite the dinner," he said. "Wouldn’t you agree, Father?"

Aldric grunted. "I’ve had better. But the company was... entertaining."

Lucien tilted his head. "You still seem quiet, Asher. Feeling alright?"

"I’m just full," Akamir replied. "And don’t have energy to spare on idiots."

Lucien narrowed his eyes for a brief second before the smile returned.

"You should be careful with your tongue, boy," Aldric said, still smiling. "He could be the next king."

"Not until Inara is alive," Akamir replied, looking at the king. "She is more suited for the throne, don’t you think?"

Aldric didn’t respond to his words as he threw the toothpick away.

"Come with me," he said, grunting as he stood. "We should have some talk."

Akamir silently stood up from his seat as he followed him.

Darvin still gave him a stern look, but Akamir didn’t respond.

The king walked down the hallway, staring at the paintings that were hanging on the walls.

Finally, he stopped at one of them that was placed opposite the window.

The moonlight shone on it, illuminating the painting.

"Do you know him?" Aldric asked, pointing at it.

Akamir looked at the painting of a man, wearing graceful armour.

He looked tall and imposing, the arrogance of his face remained clear.

"He was the last member of the otherworlder Akira Fujii’s bloodline,"

Aldric said, after not getting an answer from him.

Akamir looked at him. "The one who died due to his potential?"

"Partially, yes," Aldric nodded, staring at the painting. "But the reason for my ancestors to rebel against him was different."

Akamir looked at him in silence.

"It was for a girl," Aldric replied, his voice filled with mockery. "He died because he and my ancestor fancied the same girl."

Akamir blinked slowly.

That was... underwhelming. But also, strangely believable.

Aldric laughed dryly, running a hand through his messy beard.

"You expected something grander, didn’t you?" he said. "A rebellion sparked by injustice, power, or betrayal."

He tapped the side of his head with a thick finger.

"No. Men are simpler than that. Pride, lust, and jealousy. That’s what brings kingdoms down."

He looked back at the painting again, eyes distant.

"That fool, he had power and potential. Blood from another world, but he lost everything over a woman."

Akamir tilted his head slightly. "What happened to her?"

"The woman?" he asked. "She married some fancy guy on the other side of the world."

A pause.

"And you know what my ancestor did?" Aldric chuckled, stepping closer to the window. "He burned himself after the rejection."

Akamir frowned, unable to understand what was so special about the woman.

So, he asked, "Why do this all for a woman?"

"Because that woman was special," Aldric replied. "She was Avatar of Goddess Morana."

"..."

Akamir’s face turned cold as he looked at the king’s back.

It only took him a few seconds to grasp the entire situation.

And the first thing that came to his mind was—

’Can I kill him right now?’

"You can’t," Nayomi said, making him halt. "Not yet."

Akamir drew in a deep breath as the king looked back at him.

"You’re a strange one, boy," Aldric said suddenly. "You don’t smile, you don’t bow, and yet you sit at my table like it belongs to you."

"I didn’t notice," Akamir replied. "Must be subconscious."

Aldric barked out a short laugh. "True."

He turned back to face him, his eyes now sharper.

"You hate my son."

"I don’t think that’s a secret."

"You think he’s not fit to rule?"

"Who am I to say that?"

Aldric looked at him before he replied.

"I think he is," his voice remained unsure. "At least he can’t become a puppet like Inara."

Akamir drew in a deep breath as he asked, "Why call me here?"

Aldric didn’t respond right away.

He stepped away from the window and continued walking down the corridor, hands behind his back.

Akamir followed, waiting for his response.

"I know about Zaina," Aldric said what Akamir predicted. "That she is the new Avatar."

Akamir closed his eyes and opened them again. "What about it?"

"I plan to not repeat my ancestor’s mistake," he replied, laughing on his own. "I would have married her myself but I don’t think the church will allow it."

"....."

Akamir stopped and so did Aldric.

He turned around and walked closer to him.

Aldric placed his heavy hand on his shoulder and squeezed tightly.

"I have an order for you, Asher," he said, his voice cold. "When the Duke of Polama returns in two months, you will revoke your engagement with her."

Akamir met his gaze. "Why so?"

"So I can marry her to Lucien," he replied, squeezing his shoulder bone. "I want her to bear the child of the royal family."

He squeezed even more tightly.

"And you..." his cold voice echoed, "will be a good boy and let it happen."

Aldric patted his shoulder once before he walked past him.

"Don’t do anything foolish and die early, boy."

With that, he walked away, leaving Akamir alone.

Akamir bit down hard on his lips.

The anger that he was controlling, only he knew how hard it was.

"Ahh, this entire family,"

Akamir said, looking at the moon.

"They all want to die, don’t they?"
