Chapter 63: Foul play
Chapter 63: Foul play
As the evening wore on, drinks and food were served in plenty and after dancing for a while, Eamon slowly made his way back to Valerion, surprised with how intoxicated he felt after taking just a few sips of wine.
"Baby, I think I am drunk." Eamon grinned as he stumbled into Valerion’s arms, snaking his arms around the dragon’s waist and nuzzling his chest.
Valerion smiled at the new nickname as he embraced his mate, his fingers gently caressing his soft brown hair.
"Yes, you are a little bit drunk." Valerion admitted, his eyes darkening dangerously as he noticed that his mate had been given the wrong wine from the strong stench of alcohol that was wafting off him.
The wine that was normally consumed by dragons had a very high alcohol concentration and it easily intoxicated humans after a few sips since they had generally weaker systems.
He had been keeping a close eye on everything that Eamon consumed the entire evening and it was quite unbelievable that he had missed such a huge detail.
Something wasn’t adding up and Valerion frowned as his arms tightened around his mate protectively. Someone was playing games with him and it was hard to know who as his eyes swept through the crowd. His dragon’s instincts to protect his mate kicked in and Valerion’s aura shifted into an intimidating and brooding one.
"Love, we are going home." His voice was stern and after getting a small nod of approval from Eamon, Valerion put his hands beneath his knees, carefully carrying his mate off the ground.
Eamon lazily wrapped his arms around Valerion’s neck, burying his face in his hair.
"You smell so good." Eamon sighed in delight as he inhaled deeply, making Valerion tremble as he picked up his pace, paving his way through the crowd so that he could find his cousin to inform him of his decision to leave a bit early.
Valerion suspected foul play and he thought it was safer if someone he trusted knew of his whereabouts.
Once he had told Ezekiel of his intentions and said his farewells, Valerion started the twenty minute walk back to their house.
He stiffened halfway the journey when Eamon licked his neck.
"If you keep that up, we might not arrive home in time." Valerion sighed and the only reply he got from Eamon was a small murmur that was quickly accompanied by another lick.
Valerion chuckled softly as he accepted his fate. He was going to have to endure the sweet torture from his mate until they arrived.
The dragon hastened his steps as Eamon’s licks turned into nibbles, trying to reach their house much faster before he lost his sanity.
Their house was now in view and Valerion felt so relieved that they were only meters away but his entire body stiffened when he heard a twig snap.
Blood pumped to his heart much faster as his senses heightened, sniffing the air for any foreign scents.
His gut feeling told him something was off and when he couldn’t pick up any weird scents, Valerion relied heavily on his hearing since it was dark and he couldn’t see everything clearly even with his sharp night vision.
His ears picked up on the slightest shift in the breeze, making him aware of a nearby movement and that was all he needed for his dragon to growl fiercely as thick scales covered his forearms.
"Make yourself known before I burn you to ashes." Valerion threatened as he carefully placed his mate down before he shifted into his enormous black dragon, his wings wrapping around Eamon and totally blocking him from view.
A sharp dart to the side of Valerion’s neck had his dragon growl angrily and without much thought, he set his entire surroundings ablaze, surrounding himself with a ring of fire.
He was under attack and even though the single dart in his neck was not enough to render him unconscious, a few hundred could and Valerion’s panic kicked in as more darts started to rain down on him.
Now that the area around him was illuminated with flames, he could clearly make out the source of the darts and with a roaring flame, he set the tree canopies on fire.
That brought out his attackers and Valerion growled dangerously as he was surrounded by three much smaller dragons that were clearly intent on ambushing him.
He had the advantage of size and strength but the reasonable amount of darts in his skin and the fact that he was protecting his mate put him at a fighting disadvantage.
He had no doubt he could do whatever it took to protect Eamon and as the three dragons lunged forward, Valerion used his claws and fangs, bitting and clawing any dragon that came close to Eamon who was now unconscious from inhaling the smoke.
He fought tirelessly but as the fight drew on and his strength reduced gradually, Valerion noticed with a heart breaking intensity that the dragons were not really intent on attacking him, they seemed to have their focus on hurting his mate and Valerion’s roar was ground breaking as he fought with renewed strength.
He had no idea why these dragons were going after Eamon but they were going to have to kill him first before they got to his mate.
Valerion was certain he could hold back the three dragons but things got more complicated when two more dragons joined the fight and cornered him.
He was strong but clearly out numbered and he fought with his all until his body was badly injured and he was bleeding severely.
Valerion’s vision slowly blurred as he collapsed to the ground, still attempting to fight and he could feel his heart breaking all over again as he watched one of this attackers walk towards Eamon with a dagger.
He was too weak to sustain his dragon form and he struggled against the three dragons that held him in a strong grip as he returned to his human form.
"DO NOT TOUCH HIM." Valerion’s voice was a rough with emotion as he thrashed violently, trying to break free from the dragons that held him back.
