Chapter 48: loop hole
Chapter 48: loop hole
"Don’t be too serious, Beaumont. You really must know that nothing is free. Especially when it comes to magic." She purred and Alexander glared at her.
"We are only asking questions" Damon pointed out and the witch shrugged, ignoring him.
"Wait...how to you know my name?" Alexander asked, his voice skeptical.
"Magic." She replied and Alexander clenched his jaws to prevent himself from saying anymore.
"What price do you want us to pay?" Damon asked again and the witch smirked, her eyes a devilish sight.
"Well, let’s just say that you will owe me a favor, your highness." She set the trap.
"No, make it more specific or, we will walk out of here. You are not the only witch in the village." Alexander threatened.
He had had stories of witches coming to collect unnamed favors and they all never ended well.
"Smart." The witch praised but Alexander was unimpressed.
Witches were cunning creatures that couldn’t be trusted. Even the devil knew that.
"I want gold. Five hundred coins has a rather nice ring to it." The witch decided and Alexander looked at her like she had gone mad. That was a hefty sum. It was more than the average man made in a year and this old woman expected them to just hand it over!
Alexander frowned.
He would do whatever it took to save Damon even though he had to part with some of his savings.
"Deal." Damon spoke and Alexander nodded in agreement.
The witch smiled in what she probably thought was a satisfied smile and Alexander grimaced.
Her teeth were crooked and colored in a dark shade of amber. They were not a pleasant sight.
"Good. Now, ask your questions?" She said as she sat on a cushion before them.
"Tell us all you know of the curse that plagues my family. Do you know the wizard who cast it?" Damon went first, his heart thudding against his ribcage as he mentally prepared himself to receive some much needed answers.
"Centuries ago, I met a young wizard that was unlike any magic wielder I have ever seen. His eyes were the color of vibrant golden flames and his hair was as black as the midnight sky. He was very powerful but no one seemed to know the source of his power. Some said he had fairy blood and was immortal while others believed he was just nature’s rear occurrance. Anyway, he was the wizard that cursed your family after your ancestors had killed his younger sister a few days after her twenty fifth birthday for being a witch..." She trailed off, her eyes focused into a distant haze.
Damon and Alexander held their breaths as they waited for her to continue.
"His name was Silas Ravenwood. We were briefly acquainted throughout the centuries but I have not heard word of him for nearly forty years." She concluded and Damon couldn’t help wondering how someone could live for so long. It had to be the magic.
"I am from a family of magicians and I want to know whether I can practice magic?" Alexander asked and the witch held out her hand.
Alexander looked at her skeptically.
"Give me your hand." She she said as her palm drew closer.
"You are not going to prick him, are you?" Damon asked, his voice suspicious as he held onto Alexander’s arm.
"No, that won’t be necessary. I just want to feel the strength of his blood. The stronger, the more chances of being able to practice magic." She explained and Damon reluctantly let go of Alexander’s hand.
Alexander slowly placed his hand in the witch’s and watched as she closed her eyes and started to chant in some strange language.
"You have some strong blood ties to the Beaumont’s. They aren’t the purest but they might be strong enough to allow you to practice magic." She explained and Alexander was pleased with that information. He could be able to save Damon by breaking his curse.
His happiness however, was put to a halt when the witch spoke again.
"You will have to get a spell book and practice a few spells. You will potentially reach your full potential within three months." Both Damon and Alexander frowned. They didn’t have all that time.
They had about a month till Damon’s birthday.
"I don’t have all that time. I need to perfect my magic within a couple of weeks." Alexander pointed out and the witch quirked an eyebrow in question.
"That’s impossible, I am afraid and with magic, patience is key. You cannot rush the process. Why are you in such a hurry anyway?" She asked and Alexander was surprised.
It turned out witches didn’t not know everything. He was thankful she couldn’t read minds.
"I want to break Damon’s curse." He replied and she was thoughtfully silent.
"You love him." She pointed out and Alexander nodded.
"I do." He replied as his hand rested on Damon’s, their eyes briefly meeting in a warm gaze.
"Even if you were magically able to horn your skills in a few weeks, you still couldn’t be able to save Damon." The witch dropped a bomb that knocked the air out of Alexander’s lungs.
He was finding it difficult to breathe at the thought that all this had been for nothing.
"What...do you mean?" Damon asked, equally shaken as well.
"It means that the spell that was placed on your family can only be undone by a member of Silas’ family, something to do with blood magic. As far as I know, that wizard has no other family." She explained and the color drained from both Damon’s and Alexander’s voices.
"There is a loop hole... the curse will be broken if the wizard that cast it dies." The witch added and Alexander’s eyes burned with an emotion that was determined and terrifying.
Resolve.
"I am going to find this wizard and kill him." He said and witch briefly shuddered.
"Or, you could find him and convince him to break it." Damon suggested, finding the idea of having blood spilled distasteful.
"That could work, right?" Damon added, his voice doubtful as he looked at the witch.
