Chapter 46: crown prince

Nadine stood unmoving for a while, unable to believe the statement that had just left her son’s lips.

"He is a man, Alexander." she pointed out the obvious, afraid to even look at Damon.

"I know but he is the man, I love." Alexander replied as his fingers tightened around Damon’s.

Nadine sighed softly, trying to keep her emotions under control.

"How long has this been going on?" she asked, her eyes darting between Damon and Alexander.

"A month." Alexander replied and Nadine gazed at him, her eyes unfathomable.

"Does anyone know about this?" She asked, her voice stern and serious.

"Only a couple of friends. Why?" Alexander asked.

"It doesn’t matter. Come with me." She pointed at Alexander, her face frighteningly serene as she turned her back and started to walk away.

Alexander reluctantly let go of Damon’s hand and followed his mother.

"You can go to bed, your highness." Nadine called out to Damon in a neutral voice that made him flinch as he headed to his room.

The reality of being referred to by his title and not his name was nerve wrecking. What if Alexander’s mother hated him now?

He tried not to think about that as his thoughts drifted to Alexander, hoping that he was alright.

"Mother?" Alexander whispered once the door to his mother’s room was closed behind him.

The atmosphere was chilly as he looked at his mother’s back. She didn’t want to face him.

"I didn’t not know that you liked men. What other things are you hiding from me, Alexander?" Nadine asked as she slowly turned to face her son. She couldn’t help doubting him and worse was the fact that she felt more betrayed than angry.

Alexander should have told her about his relationship with Damon.

Damon seemed like a nice guy but that didn’t make it suddenly okay. The man was a freaking crown prince!

"I am not hiding anything, I was going to tell but then you saw us..." Alexander paused, his voice genuine as his eyes met his mother’s in a firm gaze.

He had been considering telling her about his relationship but he had wanted to first discuss it with Damon.

The skeptical look on his mother’s face broke his heart. She was trying to figure out whether she could believe a word he had said.

Alexander swallowed his pain and continued.

"It was a relationship that was unexpected but then Damon came along and took my heart. I don’t like men in general. I just like Damon." Alexander explained and Nadine let out a long weary sigh.

This was really happening. Her son was in love with a fellow man!

She couldn’t even master up the courage to be angry at him. Nadine loved him too much to cause him pain and if he really loved this crown prince, she was going to step aside and leave them alone.

It was not going to be easy but she was going to try.

What really mattered to her was Alexander’s happiness and if it was Damon that made him happy...

She didn’t want to get in the way of that. Getting in the way could make Alexander resent her and she didn’t want that to happen.

"Does his family know about you?" Nadine asked after a long bearable silence.

"No, not yet." Damon replied and Nadine bit down on her lower lip, trying to hide her discomfort at discovering the danger that Alexander could be in if this came to light.

The royals couldn’t want something so scandalous tied to them and their first move could be to eliminate the threat.

That threat could be Alexander.

Nadine shuddered at the thoughts that were running through her head.

"He is a crown prince." Nadine stated and Alexander’s brows furrowed into a small frown.

"What is that supposed to mean?" Alexander asked, trying to keep the anger that had started to boil up within him from his voice.

"It means that his affairs are the kingdom’s affairs as well. Do you think the people will be pleased to know that their crown prince has a male lover, Alexander?" Nadine reasoned and Alexander clenched his jaw.

She had a point but he was far beyond reason and consequences. All he wanted was to be with the man he loved.

Was it too much to ask for?

"I don’t care about all that. All I want is to be with the man I love. He might be dying, mother..." Alexander’s words poured out in an emotional outburst that surprised Nadine.

Her son was always clear headed and in control of his emotions.

Seeing him being so emotional and torn apart was something she was witnessing for the first time and her heart cleanched.

This was really important to him.

"Damon is dying and the worst part is that I am not sure I can save him." Alexander whispered, silent tears rolling down his cheeks as he gazed at his mother.

Nadine quickly threw her arms around him, embracing her son in a motherly hug as she softly patted his back.

"You will save him." She said the only thing that came to mind as she continued to caress his back.

Alexander returned the hug, letting himself find solace in the comforting embrace of his mother.

The future was bleak but his love for Damon was certain and he was going to do whatever it took to save him.

Alexander headed to his room afterwards and tried to get some sleep.

Normally, he had no trouble sleeping but as he lay in bed that night, his thoughts kept him awake.

The one that stood out most was that he wanted to see Damon and with soft footsteps across the wooden floor, he left his room and headed to Damon’s.

He was surprised to find Damon awake and standing by the window, staring out into the night.

The faint moonlight that entered the room made him look so magical and complimented his looks.

He simply looked like a fairy with his long silver hair glistening under the moonlight.

Alexander took a moment by the door, taking in the view since it was clear that Damon has not yet noticed his presence.

"My love." Alexander called out as he started to make his way towards him.

Damon slowly turned to face him, his serene face lighting up with a small smile as he wrapped his arms around Alexander’s waist.

"How did it go with your mother? Damon asked as their eyes met.
