Crown Of Hearts
Chapter 41: I will fight

Chapter 41: I will fight

Damon’s heart raced a marathon from nervousness as his eyes slowly studied Aya’s face.

"Why could you think that?" Damon asked, truly curious.

"I usually see couples holding hands." She replied casually and both Alexander and Damon let out the breaths that they hadn’t realized they were holding.

It was only a childish observation and it helped them realize they were not yet comfortable enough to let other people know of their relationship.

"You have very nice hair, Damon." Aya praised, her eyes sparkling as she looked at the unique shade of hair she was seeing for the first time.

"Thank you, Aya. I happen to find yours beautiful as well." He admitted and she grinned.

"We have a visitor!" his mother, Nadine exclaimed, her voice welcoming and curious as she walked through the door along with a tall and skinny middle aged man.

Damon smiled faintly as his eyes met those of the woman that had her eyes fixed on him, the realization of who he was slowly sinking in.

"Your highness?" she asked hesitantly, remembering her son worked for the crown prince.

Damon offered her a small smile as he noticed how much she resembled Alexander.

"Yes, guilty as accused." Damon joked lightly to lighten up the atmosphere that was suddenly awkward as everyone expect from Alex gawked at him.

"You are a prince?" Aya asked, disbelief and surprise coloring her small face.

Damon nodded in response before he turned to face Alexander’s mother.

"Forgive my appearance without prior notice." Damon spoke, his voice genuine and respectful.

"You have nothing to worry about, no inconveniences caused. If I may ask, any particular reason for your visit?" she asked.

Damon inhaled sharply as he chose his reply to the question.

Heavens help him, because he knew the reason he was here was to see Alexander but he had somehow missed out on the preparation to meeting his family.

Damon’s lips curled into a soft smile as he met those sharp green eyes that were eagerly waiting for his response.

"Alexander is a close friend of mine and after a few weeks of being away, I just wanted to make sure that he was alright." Damon replied honestly and Alexander hide an amused smile as he gazed at him.

Damon had handled the situation quite well because his mother could be quite intimidating especially when meeting people for the first time.

"I am pleased to hear that prince Damon, I am Nadine, Alexander and Aya’s mother." she introduced herself as her aura eased into a more relaxed one.

"Its a please meeting you." Damon admitted as he bowed slightly in respect to the woman that had given Alexander life. A person that had come to mean so much to him.

"Do you intend to stay a while?" Nadine inquired as she recalled the large travel carriage that was parked out in her compound.

"Yes, if that’s alright with you." Damon answered and she offered him a welcoming smile.

"Of course it is. Come, I will show you to the guest room." she offered as she ushered Damon towards the door.

A subtle admiration flashed through Damon’s eyes as he took in the view of the room he had been given. It wasn’t anything grand, but it was quite homey and welcoming. He liked it.

"I hope this is comfortable enough." Nadine spoke as she placed a vase on the bedside table.

"Yes, it is more than enough." Damon replied, his voice modest and appreciative.

Nadine offered him a gentle smile. The man before her was way too humble for a prince. Maybe he just had proper upbringing.

"I will leave you to settle in." She said and with a nod from Damon, she turned and left, shutting the door behind her.

Damon let himself collapse on the soft bed once he was alone and with an amused smile tugging at his lips, he unconsciously drifted off to sleep.

Alexander’s mother liked him as far as he could tell and that made him happy.

"Will she be alright?" Alexander asked the doctor that was still checking up on his sister.

"Yes, the symptoms of her illness are down a notch and its safe to assume that she will be completely healthy within three days. Just keep her well rested and hydrated." The man replied and a soft sigh of relief left Alexander’s lips.

"Thank you, doctor." He replied as he felt his taut muscles begin to relax before the exhaustion, he had fought off for days started to wash over him.

"I will be on my way then." The doctor smiled faintly as he packed up his equipment.

"I will walk you out." Alexander offered but the man was quick to decline.

"No thank you. I think you should get some rest. You don’t look so good." The doctor offered and Alexander sank into a chair as he walked away.

"Alex, are you alright?" Aya’s concerned voice brought his attention to her.

"Yes, just a little tired. Could you like something to eat?" Alexander asked.

"No, not really." She whispered.

"You need to eat something, you have been unconscious for two days." Alex reminded her and she lowered her eyes.

"I know, my stomach just doesn’t feel good. I will eat later." She assured him.

"Okay, I will be going off to my room to rest. You should get some more sleep too," Alexander suggested, and she nodded.

...

Alexander drifted off to sleep the moment his head hit the pillow and even though he desired a peaceful slumber, his dreams did not let him.

The familiar warmth and liveliness of Damon’s room was replaced by a dull and sickly atmosphere as Damon lay unmoving in the center of his bed.

His fine face was deathly pale, and his luxuriously silver hair had started to turn into a much darker shade of grey.

The view wasn’t pleasant and a pool of dread and fear settled in his chest as he ran to his bedside, tears freely rolling down his cheeks as he held Damon’s hand in his.

"Damon...?" Alexander whispered and his stomach knotted when Damon opened his eyes and looked at him, his clear blue eyes nearly lifeless.

"Alex." Damon breathed and Alexander smiled faintly as tears trickled down his cheeks.

"Yes, its me. You are going to be fine. I promise." Alexander said, his hand trembling slightly.

"Both you and I know that is less likely. I love you, Alexander." Damon confessed and Alexander slowly felt his fear turn into anger and desperation. He was right but Alexander did not want to believe that this was happening. It was Damon’s twenty fifth birthday and he was slowly slipping away and it terrified Alexander.

"If you love me, then promise me that you will fight. I cannot lose you, Damon!" Alexander pleaded, his voice raw as his eyes burned with unshed tears.

"I will fight." Damon smiled weakly and Alexander quickly embraced him in a hug, kissing his hair a couple of times.

"I will save you, just hang in there." Alexander whispered as lay Damon back on the bed and placed a kiss on his forehead before dashing out of the room.

He had only four hours to midnight! The pressure he felt was palpable as he run through the corridors, having absolutely no clue on where to begin his search for a cure.

"No!" His scream was earth shattering as he sat up in his bed, sweating profusely. Alexander’s heart was racing and his fully awake eyes frantically took in the view of his room.

He had to find Damon.

The door to his room swung open before he could make it out of bed and the sight of his mother helped to calm his nerves a little.

Nadine frowned at the sight of he extremely shaken son.

"What happened, dear?" She asked carefully as she walked into the room.

"I had a bad dream." Alexander replied as he lowered his eyes, looking at his arms that were still trembling.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Nadine asked as she sat done beside him and held his hand.

The comforting touch gave Alexander courage to speak as he raised his eyes, looking at his mother.

"Damon is sick and....I don’t want to lose him." he whispered, pain and fear burning at his throat.

Nadine embraced her son, realizing that he had grown quite attached to this prince and the idea of losing him was understandable.

The only way she knew how to help was to comfort him.

A lone tear rolled down Alexander’s cheek as he let himself hug his mother and seek some much needed comfort.

"I am sorry this is happening." she whispered as she gently caressed his hair and Alexander held back more tears.

"I want to save him but I don’t really know how. He is cursed and if I don’t find a way to save him, he will be gone next month." Alexander sniffled and Nadine was a little surprised at the revelation. If this prince was indeed cursed, then she knew a way she could help but it was a long shot. It was something she had promised to take with her to the grave but seeing how broken and tortured her son looked, Nadine decided that it was worth a try.

"How well do you remember your father?" Nadine asked carefully and Alexander pulled away from her embrace, his eyes teary as they meant hers.

"Well enough." he replied, quite confused on why they were talking about his father. He was sixteen when he had died and that was nine years ago. Alexander still missed him.

"He made me promise never to tell you this for your own safety but its the only way I know how to help." she sighed as her grip on his hand tightened.

"Tell me, mother." Alexander pleaded, his heart racing in anticipation.
