Chapter 30: too distracting
Chapter 30: too distracting
Valerion didn’t want to appear childish infront of his mate so he reluctantly let it go.
"Let’s go and find you dry clothes. I don’t want people to see you wet. You are too distracting." Valerion said and the tips of Eamon’s ears reddened as he watched the dragon that was holding his wrist.
Was he that distracting?
He pondered the thought as he looked at Valerion’s hand that was wrapped around his wrist in a familiar grip.
"I can walk just fine on my own." Eamon spoke his thoughts and Valerion threw him a calm look over his shoulder.
"We are no longer in the human world. This is my way to ensure some random dragon doesn’t snatch you away from me." Valerion said seriously and Eamon gulped.
Was that even possible?
Valerion smirked once he saw that Eamon believed him. Of course he was exaggerating.
No one could dare to steal his mate.
Valerion’s scent was all over Eamon and that alone was a signal for other dragons to stay the hell away.
Valerion was feared and that could protect Eamon but the dragon didn’t want to take his chances.
Dragons could be hot headed creatures and he didn’t want Eamon getting hurt.
They walked ahead in silence with Eamon looking around at the strange yet cool modernization of this community.
Dragons were both land and air creatures and it helped to explain why most of them had their elegant homes perched up in trees.
Others had their homes carved out in the trunk of some really huge trees and a few lived in neat caves that even had doors.
It was more than Eamon had expected.
As they walked on, both male and female dragons stopped to stare at Eamon with alert eyes.
The females pulled their children closer to them at the sight of the intruder and the act was disturbing to Eamon.
Did they really think he could hurt children?
Valerion hid his mate behind his broad back when he sensed the hatred and fear directed at him from his people.
His instincts to protect Eamon kicked in and his eyes passed on a silent warning to every dragon around.
Think about touching my mate and you are dead!
They all walked a distance away from the pair and Valerion ignored them as he walked further into the village.
He was searching for his cousin, the king.
"Ezekiel." He called out once he found him, examining a tree that had strange claw marks.
Ezekiel was a big man though not bigger than Valerion and his hair was the same midnight black shade.
His eyes were a rich mixture of deep brown and green and they were usually calm.
He was an ebony colored dragon. A grayish olive green color that was nearing to black.
"Valerion." He greeted with a slight nod as his eyes caught sight of the human that was meticulously hidden behind his older cousin’s back.
"A human?" Ezekiel asked, his voice calm and his eyes searching Valerion’s.
"He is my mate." Valerion said, his voice calm with an underlying air of possessiveness.
"That’s interesting." The dragon that excluded an air of quiet unsuffocating authority admitted.
"I know, what happened here?" Valerion asked once he didn’t sense any malice in his cousin’s aura.
He had always liked Ezekiel. The man was cool, calm and collected, something that was rare among dragons.
Valerion brought Eamon to stand beside him as he examined the strange claw marks that were on the huge tree trunk.
"Poison. Someone is poisoning our trees. There as three more similar cases." Ezekiel admitted and Valerion frowned.
"Those don’t look like dragon claws. Any idea on what the creature could be." Valerion asked as he looked much more carefully at the marks, a guess coming to his mind.
"Orges." Ezekiel confirmed his thoughts and Valerion felt his anger stir.
If there were creatures he detested more than humans, it was certainly those ashen trolls.
They were smart, cunning, manipulative and never fought their battles fairly. Poison was a cowards weapon.
"I am going to sniff them out of there hideouts and burn them all." Valerion hissed and Ezekiel was still annoyingly calm.
"We need to be strategic about this. Don’t worry, I will handle it." Ezekiel assured and Valerion felt himself relax. He trusted the man.
Ezekiel’s eyes darted to Eamon who was silently watching the interaction unfold.
"I am Ezekiel Skyfire. Pleasure meeting you..." He trailed off, not knowing the man’s name.
"Eamon." Valerion helped him out. Eamon wasn’t really comfortable speaking yet so he offered the calm dragon a small smile.
"It’s a pleasure to meet you, Eamon." Ezekiel repeated again.
"Thank you. The pleasure is mine meeting you as well, your Majesty." Eamon replied and Ezekiel smiled, clearly amused.
"Drop the fancy titles, they don’t apply here." He offered helpfully and Eamon was slightly embarrassed.
"Okay." He agreed and Valerion wrapped his hand around his shoulder, pulling him to his side.
Eamon was surprised at the contact while Valerion was tired of watching the interaction between his cousin and mate.
It was taking too long for his comfort.
He wanted to monopolize Eamon’s attention!
"We will be on our way." Valerion smiled faintly and a look of understanding flashed through Ezekiel’s eyes.
His cousin was still one very impatient man.
"Sure." He agreed and Valerion led Eamon away.
"He seems nice." Eamon pointed out and Valerion glanced at him as they continued walking.
"Don’t tell me you like him already." Valerion spoke, his voice thick from suppressed jealousy.
Why every one liked Ezekiel at first glance was something he could never understand.
The man was more respected than feared while Valerion was seen as a terrorizer.
Normally, he didn’t mind but Eamon was involved here.
"It’s too early to know that. I just think he is a good leader." Eamon answered honestly from his earlier analysis of Ezekiel.
"He is." Valerion agreed.
"Do you think he will be agree to stop the attacks on human villages?" Eamon asked, truly curious.
"He is already doing something about that. He found his mate in a human female a few months back. Dragons..." Valerion trialed off, not really wishing to complete his statement.
Dragons could do anything to impress their mates, particularly human mates that needed to be swayed into the mate bond that didn’t come naturally to them.
It wasn’t common knowledge and he wasn’t sure he wanted Eamon to know that.
This human mate of his was already here with plans to use him.
Telling him that could make it much easier for him.
