Chapter 27: willing to fight for him

Chapter 27: willing to fight for him

"I know." Damon admitted, his voice low.

"Let’s put all this depressing stuff behind us and enjoy whatever time we have left." Damon suggested, his voice an attempted but failed try at nonchalance.

An invisible dark cloud hang over their heads as they stood there in silence.

"I am not going to let you die." Alexander assured, his emerald green eyes burning with a determination that touched Damon’s heart.

"I am going to do whatever it takes to save you." Alexander declared as he turned to face him, placing a soft kiss on Damon’s head.

"I won’t stop you." Damon whispered, knowing he had little choice in the matter and it gave him a lot more hope to see past his fate.

Alexander was willing to fight for him and the thought alone meant alot.

What had he done to deserve this man?

A small smile tugged at his lips as he gazed at Alexander.

Damon must have done something right.

At the brink of dusk, Damon accompanied Eamon down into the dungeons to help with the preparations of the escape that was scheduled to take place that night.

The Valerion threw him a skeptical look and Damon ignored him as he watched Eamon open the heavy metallic door.

"Are you here to have me killed, crown prince?" Valerion asked tauntingly and Damon looked at him, his eyes a lot calmer than the faint scowl on his face.

"I wish that is reason I am here." Damon answered truthfully.

"We are here to let you go." Eamon interrupted the violent interaction that was taking place.

Valerion was surprised and skeptical.

"Why?" He asked, his gaze fixed on Eamon who was tightening his restraints.

"I will tell you later." Eamon replied as he stepped closer, injecting a needle into Valerion’s arm.

Valerion felt his vision turn blurry and his consciousness waver.

Damon’s voice was last thing he heard before his view turned dark.

"Sleep tight, dragon."

Once the unconscious dragon was securely placed into a carriage, Damon pulled Eamon aside to say farewell.

"Be safe." Damon said and Eamon smirked.

"I know you are going to miss me." He joked and Damon smiled.

"I will." He admitted honestly and then watched Eamon climb into the carriage.

"Don’t die." Damon called out once the carriage set off.

"I will try not to." Eamon’s voice was muffled by the sound of the rolling wheels and horse movements.

Damon watched the carriage disappear into the distance before he turned to head back into the castle.

Once the carriage was off the main road and onto an uneven one that trailed off into the woods, Eamon tried to get some sleep so that he could be ready for what the next day held.

The occasional potholes rattled the carriage, making it quite difficult to fall asleep and Eamon’s body eventually adjusted as he dozed off into a light slumber.

He didn’t sleep much and when the carriage halted to a stop a few hours later Eamon’s eyes flew open.

"What’s the matter?" He asked the driver.

"The dragon is awake, sir." The man replied and Eamon climbed out of his small section of the carriage and walked around to see Valerion.

The dragon was still and his grey eyes flickered with something intense as he glared at Eamon.

"You drugged me." He spoke, his voice heavy with a sharp edge.

It was enough for Eamon to know the dragon strongly disapproved of his actions.

"It was the only way to move you and ensure there were no disastrous consequences." Eamon explained and Valerion tugged at his chains.

They weren’t as strong as those that held him in the dungeons.

"I am going to break free and burn all your soldiers alive as you watch." Valerion threatened and the half a dozen men with Eamon gulped in fear.

Eamon remained calm as he glanced at his pocket watch. It was two hours till dawn.

"Do you want me to drug you again?" Eamon asked nonchalantly and Valerion glared at him.

"No." He hissed through gritted teeth.

He hated anything that could render him unconscious and vulnerable.

"Then stay still until we reach our destination." Eamon suggested and Valerion’s anger burned but he kept quiet, his eyes glaring daggers at Eamon.

They continued their journey and once they had arrived at a clearing in the woods, the carriage stopped again.

"Go now and I suggest you make haste." Eamon told the soldiers who were unbuckling the four horses that moved the carriage.

The men didn’t need more words and were quick to leave as soon as they had their belongings.

It was a cold dewy morning and the sun was yet to fully rise as Eamon opened the door, his eyes meeting Valerion’s in an unfathomable stare.

Now he was completely alone with this dragon.

"How do you know I won’t kill you once you set me free?" Valerion asked, truly curious as he looked at the man that was unfastening his chains.

Eamon’s eyes met his in a brief silence.

"I don’t." He answered as he removed the last chain.

He could feel his heart race as Valerion’s intense eyes met his.

Eamon considered running but for some reason, he couldn’t move an inch.

Valerion’s hands were suddenly around his throat, the grip surprisingly gentle yet firm.

Eamon’s eyes that were involuntarily shut tight opened, surprised that he wasn’t gasping for air and getting choked to death.

"You thought I was going to hurt you." Valerion confirmed, his heart getting pierced with invisible daggers as his unfathomable grey eyes met Eamon’s.

Valerion subtly hated this man but the mate bond somehow prevented him from hurting him.

Eamon was confused at the statement. Of course he had thought that.

"You’ve made a good number of threats." Eamon pointed out and Valerion’s hands slipped away from his throat.

Eamon watched as he climbed out of the carriage and walked away from him.

"Why did you let me go?" Valerion asked as he turned and leaned against a tree, his eyes burning into Eamon’s who was now quite a distance from him.

Valerion needed this distance to prevent himself from pouncing on the unsuspecting man.

At least until he knew his reasons for freeing him.
