Chapter 53: An ugly spat

Daisy glared at her younger sister, ’’I left because I could not bear the sight of that woman. You know the last time she laid a hand on me, I twisted her fingers so hard that her nails broke. As toxic as it is, this is the only way we can defend ourselves for now because dad is too busy to pay attention to us. We are adults, Diana. I know you were not that good in self-defense classes but I am certain that you can handle a woman like our mom who has never been trained. Why do you even endure all this?"

Diana pulled her hand from her sister’s grip as she started wearing her clothes, ’’You want me to hit her?"

’’I want you to defend yourself, goddammit!"

"If it is by hitting her, then I can’t do that. Nor am I strong enough for that.’’

Daisy stepped back from Diana, her brows tugged together as she said, ’’Physically? You can manhandle her easily when she hits you. It is wrong but at least, she will be scared to lay a finger on you the next time. You have trained with me for so long and I know how far you can use your strength. But she abuses you emotionally and you don’t even notice that. She wants to control us like puppets and when things don’t go her way, she hits us. It has always been like that. I was more pathetic than you until one day I stood up for myself. If you don’t stand up for yourself, nobody will. You can at least tell me when this happens so I can be there for you...’’

’’I am fine,’’ Diana sighed as she sat on the bed, ’’If you are asking me to rebel, I don’t want to. We are still dependent on them and I don’t even know what I want from my life so cutting off ties with them will only end up with us starving on the streets.’’

’’You are such a coward. I expected better from you,’’ Daisy stepped back under Diana’s pleading stare, ’’You know what? They have been controlling our lives for as long as I can remember. You are a year younger than me yet they put us in the same grade to invoke a competitive spirit between us. They kept us far away from each other so that we won’t get distracted. And unlike you, I am not trying to help mom. She needs a therapist, not our bloody pity, Diana.’’

’’I can’t hit her back! I am not like that.’’

’’And what do you mean by ’like that’?" Daisy snapped, ’’Like me? Are you despising me? Fine, play the good girl until you are played by her.’’

’’Daisy, wait...’’ Diana called out to her when she turned around to leave.

Daisy paused near the door, ’’You remember the first time when mom discovered that you were friends with Maxim?"

Diana frowned, not knowing why her sister was mentioning it. It happened in her junior year.

Her mother’s friend saw her and Maxim together in a restaurant and she tattletaled. Her mother then reached out to their high school classmates to get information about how long they had been hanging out together.

She booked the first flight for her and Diana was clueless about what happened.

When Diana reached the Chen mansion, her mother asked her about her friends. She told the woman about everyone briefly, without mentioning Maxim.

She knew when her mother asked her about her friends, she was actually asking about their family backgrounds hence mentioning Maxim would have angered her.

’That’s it?’ The woman had asked when she stopped after talking about everyone she was close to.

’Y-Yes,’ Diana remembered stuttering at her question.

And all of a sudden, her vision turned blurry as her mother strangled her neck with all her strength.

She felt like she was losing her breath and in her struggles, the woman’s nail dug into her neck...

Her mother apologized later and hugged her, constantly telling her that she was worried about people taking advantage of her kindness.

And Diana remembered feeling numb, from the pain and from the shock.

’’Why are you asking about it?" Diana asked her sister.

’’If you think she had dropped the topic after you said that Maxim is good, then let me tell you she has not. So, if you don’t stand up for yourself, just sit back and watch her controlling your life in the future,’’ Daisy paused for a moment before adding, ’’I know you trust Aunty Zhang. But a week ago when I went to fetch some of my documents from the mansion, I overheard mom talking to her. You can say that the old lady’s first job is being your butler and her second job is to spy on you. So, be careful. That was why I was here.’’

With that said, Daisy left, leaving Diana stunned.

Aunty Zhang. She trusted that woman so much and whenever she sat to talk to the old lady about her life, Diana talked to her unfiltered.

She never thought...

Sigh... She should have known.

Diana slumped back on the bed, closing her eyes tiredly.

This was probably the first time Daisy and her had such an ugly spat and she did not how to coax her elder sister after this.

God must be having fun while playing sudoku with her life.

Diana could not sleep the whole night as she kept twisting and turning around.

The argument with Daisy and the revelation that her most trusted nanny who took care of her when she was young was the one spying on her, were creeping into her head repeatedly.

That meant Aunty Zhang could be the reason why her mother was provoked at times. After all, they lived so far away, yet her mother made it a point to call her to Beijing suddenly out of nowhere. And none of those incidents ended without her having bruises on her body.
