Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 299: I am sorry
Chapter 299: I am sorry
Maxim dropped on the bed while holding Diana in his arms.
When he looked at her from the front, the sight of her tear strained face made him freeze for a moment, and a hint of guilt filled his eyes, ’’Did I hurt you? Damn... I...’’
Diana kissed his lips, interrupting his words, ’’You should do it more often.’’
Maxim blinked, ’’Huh?"
’’That kind of hurt...’’ Diana’s face flushed, ’’I think I like it.’’
Maxim’s eyes sparkled at the insinuation in her words but there was hint of worry in them, ’’But...’’
’’Do you want me to write it down for you?" When he eyed her blankly, Diana squinted and looked around the room. Eventually, her gaze landed on the thing that she was looking for. She leaned towards the bedside table and grabbed the marker before falling back into his arms.
Under Maxim’s confused gaze, she tugged his shirt to the side before scribbling on his chest.
Once she was done, she looked at her masterpiece proudly, ’’See, I told you.’’
Maxim raised a brow and tilted his head to look down at his chest.
In beautiful cursive handwriting, there were a few words scribbled on his skin.
’Stop worrying about me.
~Diana ♥’
Maxim’s eyes twinkled when he noticed how she had positioned her name right above his heart.
"What do you think?"
He pulled her into his arms and peppered soft kisses on her shoulder, ’’Ana.’’
’’Hmm?"
’’Nothing.’’
Diana pulled back from him and slid to the side to support her head on his shoulder as she looked at him, ’’I won’t do anything that I would not be okay with you doing,’’ she raised her hand, tracing her fingertip over his face, gazing at his features. She smoothened the small frown between his brows.
As the silence between them stretched, Diana’s eyes lowered slightly, ’’You are the only man in my life, Max. No one else does what you do to me,’’ Even as she spoke those words, she felt like she was baring a part of her soul to someone. She felt strangely exposed and if it was any other time, she would have chosen to bottle things up instead of opening up about them.
But that hint of insecurity in Maxim’s voice was like a thorn in her heart. She hated that she made him feel that way. She hated that even a small part of him could think that she would ever want someone that was not him.
It was a huge step for Diana, to take an approach to changing her past habits, to try to communicate and to talk about what she felt. Because she had never done it before, she was not used to it but she knew that some things were changing, between her and Maxim.
Maybe she was delusional but the feelings that she had might not be one-sided anymore.
She knew, if it was for him, she would be willing to change things that acted like barriers between them.
Maxim was worth it.
He always has been.
A warm touch on her forehead made Diana snap out of her daze.
Maxim kissed her forehead, holding her tightly in his arms as he buried his face in the crook of her neck.
’’Maxim?"
’’Shh...’’ Maxim nuzzled his nose in her neck, ’’Let’s stay like this, shall we?" he whispered softly.
Diana could hear the exhaustion in his voice. As he adjusted their position and held her in his arms, she lifted her arms to hug him back.
Minutes trickled by in silence, and Diana could hear the sound of his steady breathing.
She slowly moved back back from Maxim and adjusted his head on the pillow.
As she looked at his sleeping face, it was only then did she notice the faint dark circles under his eyes.
It has barely been a few days and he looked like he was on the brink of exhaustion.
Diana could not help but lean closer to him to press a kiss on his cheek, ’’Sleep tight,’’ she whispered and moved to get out of the bed.
But the moment she had turned around, fingers wrapped around her wrist, holding her in place.
Diana froze and turned around to look at Maxim who was sleeping a moment ago but now he had his eyes opened as he looked at her. A hint of terror sparkled in those obsidian orbs and the grip around her wrist was firm, ’’Where are you going?" his voice was wary as if he was unwilling to get an unwanted answer from her.
Diana felt a weird ache growing in her chest when she saw that look on his face. She climbed back on the bed and sat beside him, ’’To order food for us. I did not eat properly earlier.’’
’’With your date?" there was a sour note in Maxim’s tone that even he did not seem to have noticed as he spoke.
’’With the stranger that I accidentally ended up sharing a table with,’’ Diana said, raising an eyebrow.
As she watched the frown between his brows disappearing and his face softening in seconds, she restrained her urge to laugh. Diana fluffed his hair.
Maxim glanced at her.
Diana freed her hand from his grasp and cupped his face before leaning forward to kiss his forehead.
’’Can I go now?" Diana asked.
"I am sorry.’’
Maxim’s words made Diana look at him curiously, ’’What are you talking about?’’
’’That night, I did not do it on purpose. You asked me something and I should have told you about it, regardless of what it was.’’
And it suddenly dawned on her. She still remembered the way she had asked him about his ex-girlfriend.
Although she had asked it very casually, but it had made her feel strange when people around her kept claiming that the woman was very special to Maxim.
And mostly, the moment she saw his reaction, like he was stunned and frozen and he had no words to express it, she was consumed by a overwhelming sense of jealousy, barely thinking about how there was someone in the world who mattered that much to him.
