Chapter 291: A blind date
The coldness in his tone had Alice flinch.
But in the next moment, she masked her reaction and squared her shoulder. She retracted her hand from him, ’’I don’t know what you want. But if you want to turn Diana against me, you better drop that idea,’’ she averted her gaze.
Helian Chen stalked towards her, watching the woman retreat a few steps immediately at his approach. He stopped in his tracks, ’’Daisy is our daughter too.’’
’’It’s worthless to think about her. She lost her virginity and she even has a child she got who knows from which man. At this moment, it’s better if we put our focus on Diana and groom her properly. If you let Daisy take over your position in the future, people will say that the head of the Chen Family is a whore who...’’
Helian Chen pinched her chin in a tight grip, interrupting her words, ’’Say that again.’’
The pain had tears pooling in Alice’s eyes yet, ’’Is this how you are going at it now? Do you want to kill me? Did I not tell the truth? Do the people not call such a woman a whore?!" she snapped.
His grip loosened her chin the moment he saw that look in her eyes. It never changed. That self-loathing in her eyes never disappeared, ’’I don’t care what the world says. It is worthless to me.’’
’’Is it really?" Alice mocked. She shook her head and stepped back from him, ’’Tomorrow, let’s go out on dinner with Diana. I have plans.’’
Helian Chen frowned, ’’It was hard for me to convince her to eat with me. Do you think she will go anywhere with you?"
’’Then, it’s up to you to convince her.’’
’’What makes you think I will do it?" he watched as the woman turned around to leave, his gaze lingered towards the spot where she had the wound and as expected the dress clung to her skin, the material of the clothing had dried which told him she must have torn her wound.
’’If you don’t do it, I will do it my way,’’ Alice calmly stated in an airy voice before she left.
Helian Chen could feel a headache.
By the time he went back to his room, not so surprisingly, Diana was not around anymore.
And that did not surprise him.
He had taken a step towards Diana and it was already unexpected that she gave him the chance because he had not thought that she would agree to eat with him.
He had expected her to hold a grudge against him, maybe be angry or throw a tantrum like she used to do when she was young. But it never dawned on him that his little girl had grown up now.
It filled his heart with a hint of sourness.
Helian Chen turned around to leave the room but from the corner of his eyes, he spotted something that caught his attention.
He walked towards the bedside table and picked up the polaroid picture that was awkwardly pinned near the photo frame.
’’Did Diana see this?" Helian Chen picked up the photo, tracing it’s edges with his thumb.
That picture always stayed hidden, away from everyone’s view because that was probably the only memory he had of the girl who taught him love. Of the person that Alice used to be.
He looked at the picture of the young girl and unconsciously, adoration filled his eyes. He placed it in one of the drawers, promptly locking it right after.
The following evening in a seven-star hotel, Diana sat at the table, puzzled as she looked at her parents who were sitting opposite her.
The food was yet to be served and the waiter had not even taken their orders yet which was even stranger.
Usually, the managers came over to bootlick her father or greet them personally but now even the waiters were not taking their orders.
Diana massaged her fingers under the table, ’’We...’’
’’Come with me,’’ Alice cut her off as she glanced at her husband.
The man seemed reluctant initially but he got up quietly, ’’Wait for us. We will be back soon.’’
Diana’s lips twitched.
Why did it sound so much like parents dropping their kids at school and going to private to have some ’me’ time?
Had she not known her parents’ equation, Diana would have assumed that they were looking for an excuse to romance each other.
’’Speak of wild thoughts,’’ Diana rolled her eyes and reached out for the glass of water that was at a little distance.
A long hand appeared in her view as slender fingers wrapped around the glass of water and passed it to her, ’’May I know what wild thoughts are occupying your mind?"
Diana tilted her head only to find a man taking the opposite seat. His blonde hair was coiffed to perfection and he seemed every bit of a gentleman, ’’This table...’’
’’...is booked?" the man smiled charmingly, ’’I am aware, Miss Chen.’’
Diana’s eyes widened when the man addressed her by her surname, ’’How do you know my...’’ And her face dropped slightly when the realization dawned on her.
’’It seems like you have realized. I am Noah,’’ the man reached out his hand towards her.
Diana sat frozen in her seat. A blind date.
She should have known.
It took her a moment to compose herself. As she looked around, her lips parted.
As expected, there were paparazzi everywhere, cameras planted in discreet corners of the grand hall.
’’Miss Chen?"
Diana closed her eyes and sucked a deep breath, trying to accept the reality of the situation that she was stuck in.
It was not any ordinary dinner. All along, it was a blind date for her.
Diana knew that she should have expected something like this from her mother after everything that had transpired in their family in the past months.
Just go through it for the moment. She told herself.
’’Yes,’’ she reached her hand towards him.
The man stood up and shook her hand before kissing the back of her palm.
Her fingers twitched.
Diana resisted the itch to pull her hand back immediately.
