Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 279: At that time
Chapter 279: At that time
’’You...’’ Hazel was exasperated, ’’Who did you get this kind of humor from?’’
Maxim looked dead back at her without responding.
Hazel sighed as she opened her mouth to speak.
’’I had a loving boyfriend back when I was young, or so as I thought until I found that jerk shoving his dangling b...’’
’’Mom, language.’’
’’...until I found him cheating on me. The me now would have laughed it off. But my younger self thought that it was the end of her life. I thought the least I deserved was an apology, a closure and an explanation but I never realized that those things needed a person to have morals. Cheaters possessed anything but morals. I was heartbroken and hurt. I felt betrayed so to spite him, I said that I would have a much better man in my life.’’
’’...which I do now,’’ Hazel looked at Maxim, ’’But at that particular moment, I wasn’t referring to you. I met your father in the nightclub. He was sulking in a corner and I was curious if he got cheated on as well.’’
’’Seeing someone else going through the same misery put my heart to rest, as cruel as it sounds. At least, to my younger self, it did. I approached him with the intention that if he was cheated on by his partner, then we both could drown in our sorrows together and it would probably lessen my pain.’’
’’Unfortunately for me, he said that he did not have a woman to cheat on him...’’
Hazel slowly trailed off while she spoke, falling into a daze. She never recollected that night but now that she was doing, every forgotten memory seemed to be rushing back all at once. Uninvited.
Hazel did not what she saw in him. That man was a grump, spoke barely a few words, he seemed like a callous person despite his princely appearance and posh accent. He was handsome, gorgeous but he was not the kind of man she liked back then. He was not her type. Too serious. Too aloof.
But maybe her type changed the moment her long term boyfriend cheated on her and she met that cold yet charming man in that nightclub who was trying to comfort her with awkward one liners that made her cackle inside.
Maybe she found his seriousness a tad bit adorable. Or maybe his unique hair color, the slight tresses of silver in black, caught her attention. Maybe it was that particular night or just her heart in that particular moment.
One thing led to another until they found their way with each other.
He could not hold his drink well yet he comforted her like the world ceased to exist.
And Hazel needed it.
At that time.
In that moment, she craved his attention, touch, and all that he was saying to her. It was oddly so comforting.
’’What happened then? Did you continue talking to him or leave?"
Diana’s question stirred Hazel awake, ’’We did more than just talking but anyways. I left that place the next day.’’
’’Why are you afraid of him?" Maxim grasped the point.
Hazel’s lips twitched.
’’It was mutual, right?" Maxim raised his hand in the air, his index finger drawing a random arc.
’’Do I look like the person who would force herself on someone?" Hazel looked at him in disbelief.
Maxim remained quiet.
"_"
’’You... It’s just... I... Before I left..’’
Everyone in the room had an ominous premonition the more Hazel played around with her words instead of getting straight to the point.
’’Mom,’’ Maxim pinched the spot in between his brows.
Hazel poured herself another glass of water and downed it in a few big gulps, ’’Before I left, I tied his hand to the bed with the sheets, I locked his ankles with his belt and h-hit him to my heart’s content. When my hands hurt, I jumped on him and kicked him till he was swollen everywhere. He was a bad drinker hence he was pretty hungover so all he could do was look confused and pained while I vented on him.’’
’Silence’
One could not tell how much time passed until Maxim opened his mouth to speak, ’’Alright.’’
’’Alright?" That’s all he had to say? Hazel was dumbstruck.
’’Why would you do that?" Logan asked.
Diana felt relieved that unlike the unusual duo, at least someone had a rational question in their head regarding this whole bizarre situation.
All heads turned to Hazel once again, waiting for her explanation.
Hazel raised her hands in the air, ’’I don’t feel the least bit guilty about what I did. I accidentally dropped his wallet and found a ring in there. That liar had the nerve to tell me that he was single. Imagine a woman who just got cheated on by her boyfriend and got herself engaged with a committed man on the very same day. I loathed myself and that person so much. Unfortunately, my life and body are too precious for me to harm...’’ Hazel flipped her hair, ’’So, I decided to harm his.’’
Diana pursed her lips to stifle her laughter but she could not hold it in the end. The situation was not funny at all but the way Hazel was putting it changed her worldviews.
It was almost like seeing the best in the worst situations. Rather than crying or being sad, Hazel just chose to let her intrusive thoughts win.
’’You must have looked cool being like that,’’ Diana let go of Hazel’s hand and wiped the corner of her eyes as she laughed.
’’Sure, I did,’’ Hazel turned to face Diana. Her face lit up when she saw the bright smile on her face, ’’Oh what I would do to have grandkids with such a beautiful smile that lights up my house.’’
Diana paused, stunned by her statement.
Maxim froze.
Having gotten a crux of the whole matter, Logan turned to leave, not wanting to indulge in any sort of public display of affection.
