Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 257: Less than friends
Chapter 257: Less than friends
"I had your phone. When exactly did you call the lawyer over?" Alex interrogated Maxim as soon as they left the VIP room.
Through the gradually closing door, they could hear the sounds of things shattering as Louis lost his temper.
The lady named Evelyn walked at a safe distance from them. And the distance was safe enough for her to not catch a word of what Alex was saying, hence he was not restrictive with his mouth.
’’I did not,’’ Maxim shrugged.
’’Then what now? What are we doing?"
Maxim stopped, turned to look at Alex, ’’Following her.’’
"_"
Maxim tucked a hand in his pocket and continued walking as if he was taking a stroll in the park.
Alex stood there dumbfounded.
For the sake of god, why couldn’t he understand where Maxim’s confidence was stemming from?
And his doubts were cleared soon after when their mysterious lawyer stopped in front of Diana’s desk.
Alex glanced at Maxim who had a foxy little smirk resting on his face.
If that smirk were to be translated to human language, it would be somewhat around-’that’s my girl’.
And suddenly, Alex did not feel confused anymore.
No wonder Maxim was calm the whole time.
This seemed to have something to do with Diana.
’But all those bunch of lawyers seemed to be scared of this one. How did Diana manage to invite her over?’ Alex wondered in confusion.
Moreover, Evelyn said that she was from West Virginia. So, how did she arrive here just in time? And, how did Diana know that Louis would involve his lawyers in this matter?
Alex gave rest to his brain cells and observed the scene, hoping to catch a clue.
Evelyn tapped on Diana’s desk, ’’You seem quite busy.’’
Diana looked up in surprise but when she saw Evelyn, her lips curved up in a wide smile. She pushed herself to her feet and hugged the woman, ’’Thanks for being here in time.’’
’’I owed you this,’’ Both the women hugged each other before breaking free as Evelyn spoke up, ’’Lucky for you when you called me, I was already here in LA.’’
Diana looked at her damp hair and the hot pink swimsuit peeking from beneath her trench coat, ’’And were you up to any good?"
Evelyn laughed, ’’It was my sister’s big day. She got married in Vegas,’’ As Diana shot her an apologetic look, she shook her head, ’’The wedding was over. While they rushed to enjoy their wedding night, I was left to sing alone with vodka and my raging loneliness,’’ she added in a conspiratorial whisper, ’’So, you gave me something to get my mind moving.’’
Diana burst out in laughter, ’’Funny,’’ At this moment, she noticed Maxim and Alex standing nearby. While Maxim was giving her ’the eyes’, Alex seemed like a nosy neighbor aunty trying his best to eavesdrop, ’’This is...’’
’’You already told me about them. The director’s grandson,’’ Evelyn pointed her chin towards Alex. When Diana nodded, the woman then turned to Maxim, ’’Your man.’’
Diana began to nod instinctively but when those words registered in her mind, her face flushed.
She stood there speechlessly.
But pleased with the title of ’Diana’s man’, Maxim stretched his hand towards Evelyn with a smile, suddenly finding the woman much pleasant to his eyes, ’’Maxim Warner. Pleasure meeting you.’’
’’Evelyn Moon. Certainly,’’ Evelyn shook his hand with a smile.
Alex felt a slither of goosebumps when he saw Maxim’s sweet smile. You are smiling just because she called you her man? You are nuts, aren’t you?!
As much as he wanted to scream, he held himself back.
In his grandfather’s absence, he was holding the fort of the hospital so he could not act rampant like other days.
’’Are you leaving now?"
To Diana’s question, Evelyn’s expression hardened slightly. But with a soft sigh, she nodded, ’’I would have loved to stay for dinner with you but PDA doesn’t happen to be my favorite course.’’
Diana knew that she was simply avoiding mentioning why she could not stay but still, she felt a heat creeping up on her neck.
Evelyn reached to hug Diana and just before breaking the hug, she whispered, ’’A few weeks ago, your parents still had their people keeping an eye on my whereabouts. I am not sure if you invited some trouble for yourself by getting me here.’’
When they broke the hug, Diana gave the woman a reassuring smile.
Evelyn nodded and left.
Looking at her retreating back, Diana fell into a daze for a moment. It was only a matter of time before her made their move but the question was, what would they do?
’’So, you had it all planned?" Alex’s question brought her back from her reverie, ’’You were in this together?"
Diana glanced at him, ’’I was taking precautions. I expected something like this.’’
’’Don’t lie to me. I know you both were making me anxious on purpose. I just knew that both of you are no good people,’’ he turned around and left, pulling out a cigarette from his pocket.
Diana looked at his retreating back in shock. She felt rather misunderstood, okay?
’’Forget him,’’ Maxim walked towards her, ’’Don’t think about him.’’
’’Who should I think about then?" Diana turned to look at him.
’’You can think about me,’’ Maxim said as he tucked her hair behind her ear with utmost concentration as if it was some important project.
Diana’s heart fluttered. But I think about you. All the time.
The words somehow rested on the tip of her tongue but when she spoke, they were translated to, ’’How was it? Did Evelyn come in time?"
Maxim nodded, ’’Right on time. She seemed to have scared off the rest of the people. I don’t think they are coming back.’’
Diana laughed, ’’She used to work for my dad in his team of lawyers until a few years back when she moved back to West Virginia to stay close to her mother.’’
’’Is she your friend then?" Maxim asked her. Small talks were never his thing but with her, he loved talks, big or small.
She could go on talking about her favorite color and he would listen to her like she was singing his favorite song.
He wanted her to consume him in her life, in her world. Every small detail, every big affair of hers, he wanted to be a part of.
Weird. He thought.
’’Less than friends. More than acquaintances,’’ Noticing his confused expression, Diana explained, ’’When she used to work for the Chens, she needed to attend all our big events and annual balls. She was not good with gossipy ladies and flirtatious men. I helped her tackle them usually so we had this mutual harmony.’’
’’Flirtatious men?" Maxim’s attention stuck to those two words.
’’Yeah, you know the men who hit on her. There are lots of those in those events. They sniff a beautiful lady and they just swoop in...’’
Her words trailed off when Maxim wrapped an arm around her waist and yanked her closer to him, ’’So, you are telling me that you saw your fair share of those too?"
Her breath hitched. Proximity with Maxim always did her dirty. She always forgot her point, words, and protests, ’’Those? What those?"
"Flirtatious men,’’ he said, his gaze dark and his voice thick.
Diana gulped. For some strange reason, she felt nervous, ’’Yeah. Some...’’
’’Some?"
She averted her gaze nervously.
Maxim bit her earlobe, ’’Seems like we need to have this conversation back at your place.... or mine.’’
