Crashing into an Old Flame
Chapter 252: No one important?

Chapter 252: No one important?

’’And if you die, I would have to work more till I get myself a new assistant. Better than that, we can sit back and watch how that cunning guy handles it. Let him send his assistant over. If she dies, it’s his loss and I can sit back and enjoy the show without suffering any losses.’’

Veronica was stupified. She should have known. Such logic can easily stem from this person.

’’Dr. Warner doesn’t send Diana around for doing rounds,’’ Veronica mumbled grumbly.

’’Huh?’’ Alex gave her a side eye, "Why not? He is so fussy."

"_"

Veronica wanted to bang his head on the opposite wall and tell him that not every doctor treated their assistant like a 24X7 housemaid, unlike him.

As they stepped inside his office, both Alex and Veronica stopped in their tracks.

’’Dad?" Alex was taken aback when he saw his father leaning back on the edge of his desk, fiddling with the pack of cigarettes he had left there.

"You are back. Finally,’’ Qin Zehan pushed himself to his feet, ’’I was getting bored.’’

Alex was speechless. His father was saying it like he had left him alone in this office on purpose.

Veronica greeted Qin Zehan before leaving the father-son duo alone in the office.

Once she left, Alex walked towards the man whose attention had shifted to the opposite wall.

’’Dad, what are you doing here?"

’’I was looking at that, trying to figure out what it is,’’ Qin Zehan pointed his chin towards the wall where a framed picture of a medical report hung in its full glory, surrounded by some of Alex’s achievements in the medical field.

Alex’s lips twitched. That’s not what he meant when he asked the man what he was doing here.

Regardless, he followed Qin Zehan’s gaze and looked towards the wall. A faint smile formed on his lips at the sight of the report, ’’Conjoined twins. They were born like that, joined at their heads.’’

’’Oh?"

As Qin Zehan glanced at him expectantly, Alex proudly announced, ’’That was the first ever complicated surgery I performed. And it was successful.’’

Qin Zehan nodded, ’’I always knew you were doing great here.’’

Alex’s face turned blank for a moment. Was that a word of praise that his father was bestowing on him?

Qin Zehan was a man of high standards. Be it his work, lifestyle, or family, things barely satisfied him unless they were perfect.

And as far as Alex knew, he was a ’far from perfection’ kind of character. So, for his father to praise him, he did not know how to respond.

All he knew was that he felt a sense of accomplishment filling him from within, making him feel rather jittery.

’’Are you surprised?" Qin Zehan arched a brow. When Alex nodded, he shook his head helplessly.

He loosened his tie as he explained, ’’I wanted you to help me with business. But Father was persistent about letting you stay here. So, I understood that in his eyes, you must be the best for him to take such a decision.’’

Alex smiled, but the smile did not reach his eyes, ’’In his eyes, I am not the best,’’, A hint of bitterness flickered in his gaze.

’’No?" Qin Zehan looked at him in surprise, ’’I have heard that there is this colleague of yours and father is quite fond of him.’’

Alex stiffened.

Qin Zehan’s eyes narrowed slightly but the smile on his handsome face did not falter in the slightest, ’’What was his name again..? Warner. Yes. Maxim Warner. Son, tell me about him.’’

He flipped the pack of cigarettes between his fingers as Alex’s face gradually paled.

’’Dad, he is no one important,’’ Alex blurted.

’’Doesn’t matter. I am curious.’’

’’I told you he is no one important!" Alex snarled, his fingers locked into tight fists.

Qin Zehan glanced at him quietly, without a shift in his expression.

And it took Alex a few moments to calm down. The way he reacted a moment ago started dawning on him and he looked at Qin Zehan in a moment of fluster, ’’Dad... I... I...’’

’’Sir, there is an emergency...’’ The door to his office was pushed open after a series of urgent knocks.

Veronica, who had left a few minutes ago was standing at the door as she tried to catch her breath.

Alex gulped and shifted his attention away from Qin Zehan quickly, ’’I will be right there,’’ he then turned again to look at the man who was still leaning back on the desk and calmly gazing around as if he was watching a show, ’’Dad, you should go back. I will see you at the mansion later.’’

Qin Zehan nodded, ’’Medical science has never been my thing anyway. And I don’t happen to be sick either.’’

Letting out a relieved sigh inwardly, Alex turned around and left. Thankfully. Thankfully, his father did not notice anything.

Veronica followed after him in a rush.

As the office door closed, the breathtaking smile on Qin Zehan’s face faded, ’’...Unfortunately, this doesn’t seem like the right time to leave.’’

He pulled out his phone and called his secretary.

’’Yize, did you look into what happened in the hospital yesterday?" Qin Zehan frowned as he slid his phone to the desk after putting it on the speaker.

’’Yes, president. It’s exactly as I mentioned to you. There has been a ruckus in the hospital because of a patient...’’

’’I don’t remember that included Alex being hit by anyone?" Qin Zehan interrupted him, ’’Why is his face swollen?"

On the other side, Yize stopped in his tracks and thought through the data he had gathered, ’’Yes, President. It seems like the patient’s family got a little... violent initially.’’

’’What about the other mark on his face?’’ Qin Zehan had noticed it on the very same day he came to LA but for a man, it was no big deal to get a few bruises so he had not brought it up.
