Diana glanced at him, ’’Your point is?"
As Diana tried to stand up from the desk, her legs trembled and she almost lost her balance.
Just when she thought she was going to fall headfirst on the floor, Maxim grabbed her elbow.
He helped her dress completely. After zipping her pencil skirt and putting on her coat, he looked at her.
"My point...’’ Maxim ran his fingers through the loose strands of her blonde hair as he tilted his head to the side, ’’is that I deserve a kiss for that.’’
Diana glared at him.
She placed her hands on his chest, intending to push him away but he wrapped his arms around her waist and pulled her closer.
As they swayed side to side until Diana started feeling dizzy, she gave up and pressed a kiss on his chin before leaning into his arms.
Maxim’s smile widened, showing his dimples and he held her tighter than before.
’’We have work to do,’’ At the reminder of it, Diana broke the hug and rushed out of his office.
Maxim sighed. He did not know if having her at the same workplace, beside him all time was a bad thing or a good one.
Diana Chen was like the cup of coffee that kept him awake and efficient. But sometimes she tasted like wine, leaving him drunk and dizzy.
After Diana discussed the rest of the appointments he had for the day, she was about to leave when Maxim held her hand.
She looked at him confusingly, ’’Did I forget something?"
He pulled her onto his lap, ’’Ana, have I ever told you why I wanted to become a doctor?"
Diana gave it a thought but then she shook her head. She was always curious about it. Since the first time she met Maxim, he seemed to have been determined about being a doctor, unlike her who could not figure herself out for years.
’’ My grandfather did not have a peaceful death,’’ Maxim’s words made her turn to look at him.
’’He had a seizure. So, we took him to the nearest hospital to our house in Avalon. After the doctor prescribed anti-seizure medications, his condition showed signs of improvement. But mom could not stop worrying about him so she admitted him to the hospital in case he needed further medical attention. She stayed at the hospital with my grandfather while I left to get the essentials back from home.
It was past midnight when I returned to the hospital only to discover that while I was gone, my grandfather had two consecutive seizures. They told us that he needed immediate surgery.’’
She grabbed his hand with a frown on her face.
"There was only one neurosurgeon in that small hospital who was the main doctor of the surgical team. But, there was another emergency case in that usually desolate hospital that night. The person involved was a VIP patient and the doctor left my grandfather in the operation theatre.
We decided to have him shifted to some other place but that was the only hospital in the place where we lived in Avalon. The distance from the other hospitals was too long. The consecutive seizures made my grandfather’s blood oxygen level drop continuously until he passed away.’’
Diana was stunned.
And it suddenly dawned on her why he reacted the way he did yesterday.
It was too coincidental that Louis’ situation resonated with Maxim’s grandfather’s.
Diana inhaled a deep breath, ’’Then did you sue them? That doctor? That hospital?" Just thinking about it made her feel indignant.
Maxim nodded, ’’But it did not work. They went away scot-free.’’
Her face fell.
Maxim pressed a finger on her cheek and turned her face towards his laptop, ’’Until a few years ago when the restaurants I bought started making profits that were just enough for me to acquire the hospital, and remove all its old staff. Coincidentally, that doctor still happened to be there so he was sued again. This time, however, the case against him wasn’t dropped casually. He was found guilty.’’
On the laptop, Diana saw a slideshow of layout pictures of an old hospital and a new one, ’’You got it renovated?"
Maxim nodded, ’’Found it filthy.’’
Diana drew circles on his palm with her index finger while looking at the pictures.
A smile stretched on Maxim’s face when he saw through her tiny attempt to comfort him, ’’It has been ages. I don’t remember much about him,’’ he comforted her instead.
’’Nothing?" Diana looked at him doubtfully. Even she remembered her grandfather well after all these years.
’’He was not that much of a friendly person,’’ Maxim poked her nose, ’’And he was quite strict. Somewhat scary.’’
Diana burst out in laughter when he scrunched his brows.
’’But he was caring and sweet,’’ Maxim sighed.
’’I am sure he is in a better place now,’’ Diana smiled.
’’You know why I told you about this today?"
’’There is a reason for that?"
Maxim cupped her face, ’’I don’t want you to think that I am capable of ever hurting you intentionally," he sighed, "And if I ever hurt you unintentionally, punish me in any way you deem fit. I am yours."
Diana’s smile faltered.
Such sweet words. Yet none of them measured up to the feelings consuming her heart.
Every second. Every moment. At every juncture of her existence, her heart was blurring the lines that had always been there between them.
She was sinking into this chasm called Maxim Warner. And Diana knew that there was no way out of this.
...
’’Boss, are you not feeling well?" The man who had stayed by Louis’ side the day before asked when he noticed Louis’ absentmindedness.
Louis was looking out of the window in a daze when he heard those words, ’’Elder Qin, how long has it been since you have been by my side?"
