Chapter 223: Rookie mistakes
Chapter 223: Rookie mistakes
Dr. Rick looked at the tumor barely the size of 2 inches and he nodded his head in satisfaction, ’’The operation is successful,’’ he turned to look at his assistant, ’’Close him up.’’
The assistant nodded as she took his position while he stepped back.
The rest of the surgical team members began to disperse but before Dr. Rick could step out of the operation theatre, his assistant’s panicked voice rang out.
’’Doctor, the patient is bleeding...’’
Dr. Rick froze, ’’What do you mean bleeding?" he immediately turned around and approached the patient before he began to examine him.
"Elevate.’’
The dumbfounded assistant immediately returned to her senses when she heard the sharp tone in the man’s voice as he shot a glare at her. She quickly complied with his orders while the members that were about to disperse quickly resumed their positions again.
’’Scalpel.’’
’’Saws...’’
As minutes trickled by, with the occasional sharp tone of Dr. Rick commanding his assistant, the operation theatre was drowned in silence.
’’...How can it be...?"
The anaesthetist noticed the Doctor’s strange reaction and could not help but ask, ’’Doctor, did you discover...’’ her words were lodged back in her throat when her gaze accidentally landed on the patient and her face changed immediately.
’’How did his condition go undetected so far?" Dr. Rick snarled, ’’Who was responsible for his past medical records and recent test records?!"
His assistant shrank her neck, ’’His past records were handed to me by Miss Veronica. As for his recent records, I... you...’’ she did not dare to say that she had taken care of everything properly and it was him who overlooked things. So, the patient’s condition going undetected for so long was not her oversight, it was his.
As indignant as the assistant was, she knew that she was not like Veronica who was gaining experience by being an assistant and she would become a doctor in the future. Nor was she like Diana who had an excellent educational background and was doing this job just for the sake of it, while being fiercely protected by Maxim in the hospital.
’’What do you mean to say? Are you saying that it is my fault? You people... I feed you like dogs yet you make such rookie mistakes. Do you think I can afford such incidents in my career? Do you people want to ruin me?!"
The assistant knew that she could not rise to the ranks of being an assistant and she could not afford to lose her job so she kept mum with her head lowered, shoulders trembling.
The rest of the members of the hospital team were used to such an attitude from Dr. Rick and none of them stepped forward to dissipate the tension.
These three doctors were most popular in the neurology department. While Maxim was internationally known for his past research, Alex was equally talented as well and he shined even brighter than Maxim with the halo of his exceptional family background. As for Dr. Rick, the patients who did not know anything would choose Dr. Rick if they were asked to pick one from the three of them without a hitch.
The reason was his flawless records where one could not find a single blemish. Not only was he topper in his batch but ever since he started working, all the cases he took have been highly successful. Every patient he treated miraculously recovered, without a single miss, adding to his reputation.
But only a few staff of the hospital who had worked with him multiple times were aware of the things that transpired behind the curtains. Unlike Alex or Maxim, this man in front of them did not accept every patient that visited him. He would turn down patients with complicated cases without a shred of guilt.
And those patients who were turned down would never know that the reason they were rejected was because their health conditions were not simple to treat. They thought that the doctor was so highly sought after that he had no time in his schedule and they just turned out to be the unlucky ones who could not be treated by him. And it boosted his reputation even more, making the patients who were personally treated by Dr. Rick feel like they were lucky.
If people knew the truth behind it all, they would feel goosebumps.
For the ordinary people who treat doctors like gods, how many of them know of the malpractice that occurs behind closed doors?
But for the members of the surgical team who were standing in the operation theatre did not feel an ounce of shock. They were used to seeing such things.
And the patient lying on the operation bed happened to be the unlucky one.
All his previous records detected the obvious tumor in his head but gone undetected was the most fatal issue that was growing and spreading behind that seemingly harmful tumor.
Glioblastoma Multiforme. A grade-4 brain cancer.
Amidst the doctor’s outburst, the nurses exchanged meaningful glances as they whispered to each other.
’’No wonder Dr. Warner did not accept this patient...’’
’’He must have known how hopeless this patient’s condition is...’’
Having never worked with Maxim before, they did not know him as a person. Although they admired him and he was popular in the hospital, they had no idea what his personality was like except for being cold and withdrawn. So, it was not hard for them to assume that just like Dr. Rick, even Maxim was reluctant to treat a patient whose case was nothing but a dead end.
’’And even Dr. Qin did not treat him...’’
Although their voices were low, but Dr. Rick who had gotten hypersensitive about his future and career had his senses sharpened because of his paranoia.
He heard those whispers loud and clear.
’’What did you say?" his sharp gaze cut to the nurses who were whispering to each other.
Both the nurses shivered at his cold voice.
’’Did you just mention Maxim?" he queried, his eyes narrowed.
