Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 162: Greedy for her
Chapter 162: Greedy for her
Daisy stroked Diana’s back, letting her hug tighter, ’’I am so relieved that I accepted Ryle’s offer for this job and came here.’’
Diana pulled back from her, ’’You are in a disguise," she glanced at her from head to toe.
Daisy nodded.
Before Diana could speak again, she was pulled back from the collar of her coat and she found herself standing beside Maxim.
She raised her head to look at him, ’’Warner, this is...’’
’’Dexter,’’ Daisy cut her off, her scrutinizing gaze shifting between her and Maxim.
Diana could sense that Daisy had no intentions of revealing her identity, ’’He is...’’ she began to introduce Maxim as if it was the first time both of them met each other.
Daisy waved a hand, ’’Maxim Warner. Childhood friend. I know about him.’’
Maxim glanced at Diana. She mentioned him to others but she never mentioned this person to him.
Diana pulled her hand out of his grip, ’’We are leaving.’’
’’Where are you going?" Maxim looked at her.
’’My place,’’ Diana glanced at him from above her shoulder as she stepped towards Daisy.
Daisy observed their expressions and quietly held her sister’s hand.
’’What do you mean, your place?" Maxim frowned, ’’You are going to take him to your place?"
’’Yes.’’
"No."
"Why not?" Diana frowned. She just wanted to get over with all this and go back with Daisy so that they could talk.
Her mind was not working. Out of all the places in the world, she did not think she would bump into Daisy at the airport when they came to pick Ryle up.
It filled her with fear when she thought that she was asking Maxim to drop her midway. What if he did not insist on bringing her along to the airport? What if she took a cab back to her place? Undoubtedly, she would have missed the opportunity to meet her sister and the thought of it made her feel uneasy.
"You can’t take him home no matter what," Maxim stepped closer to her, almost towering over her.
Diana scoffed, "You are being unreasonable," Some time ago when she was talking to him in his car, he was being casual and pushing her buttons as if her words did not hold much weight.
Now that she wanted to leave, he was imposing.
At the end of the day, what was he thinking? What in the world did he want from her?
Maxim massaged his brows, "It’s late. Do you want to take a man to your place at this hour? And you think I will let you do that?"
"She... he is not a stranger," she calmed her voice, trying to coax him.
"Stranger or not, I don’t care. You want to talk? Great, you all can come over to my place and talk as much as you want to."
"You..." Diana was rendered speechless. She had never seen Maxim acting so unreasonably before.
Now that she thought about it, Maxim had no idea that Dexter was Daisy in disguise. He must be worried about her safety.
"I won’t disturb you," Maxim added when he saw her hesitation.
Diana looked at him for some before she nodded, "Fine, but from your place, do you mean Ryle’s mansion?"
Before Maxim could speak, Ryle interjected, "He has his own place but it’s rather far from here. My mansion is closer. I would love to be a good host while you catch up," he rubbed his hands together.
The expression on his face told Diana that he was up to no good. She doubted he would give a moment of privacy to her and Daisy.
She did not want to agree to it but she was not willing to make Maxim worry.
Maxim seemed adamant about his decision not to let her take Daisy home.
There was no harm in agreeing to him now and finding a chance to tell him about Daisy’s identity later if she permitted it.
"Okay..." Before Diana could finish speaking, she felt a grip on her wrist.
"I haven’t shared my opinion yet," Daisy stepped forward, her eyes shifting from Maxim to Ryle.
"Opinion?" Ryle’s playful gaze landed on Daisy, "Don’t forget who you work for now."
Even though he looked as cheerful as before, but Diana could hear the threatening edge in his voice.
Ryle and Maxim were good to each other because they were best friends. From Diana’s observation, Ryle treated Maxim with sincerity but that did not mean she was not wary of the former.
Ryle was no joke. She had known it since their encounter in his place. If she had made a tiny slip-up that day, she would not have survived to this day to see Daisy.
And knowing that Daisy was working for such a man filled her heart with discomfort.
"Are you threatening he...him?" Diana glanced at Ryle.
Ryle tilted his head to the side, "Is that any of your business?" He took a step towards her, his eyes narrowing.
"Back off," Maxim’s cold gaze landed on Ryle.
Both the men had their gazes locked. In the end, Ryle took a step back, his usual playfulness back on his face, "I was not threatening Dexter. He is my right-hand man so I was just giving him a gentle reminder of how he should act," Ryle explained to Diana in a very amicable manner.
Diana glanced at Daisy worriedly but the latter gave her a reassuring gaze.
Daisy tilted her head to look at Ryle, "I can take up this petty job. I can throw it away. Do not assume that it can tie me up."
Ryle raised an eyebrow, but in the end, he burst out in laughter. He looked like he heard the biggest joke in the world, "Poor thing, don’t forget the contract you have signed. It will haunt you if you dare to quit the job."
A contract? Diana grasped Daisy’s hand, worry filling her heart. This conniving man even made her sister sign a contract?
Maxim’s gaze landed on their interlocked hands. He stared at it for a few moments before looking at Diana’s worried face but she was not looking at him. She did not spare a gaze in his direction.
And he had the urge to punch the man next to her.
But he reminded himself that he was a doctor. His job was to save lives, not to take them. Yet the incessant chanting was proving to be ineffective as the frustration continued piling up in his chest.
Why was he feeling so suffocated?
Didn’t he reject her already? Knowing that she just wanted him as a one-night stand they might not be able to reverse it after it’s done and it might ruin everything they had, he continuously pushed her away.
He rejected her again and again without considering her feelings because he was selfish.
He wanted more. One night. Only lust. Only body. Were these enough for him?
When they were young, he did not dare to look into her eyes for fear that he would expose himself. She thought he kissed her wrist as a way to console her when she was down. She assumed that it was a friendly act on his part.
But it was way more than that. It was all that she was willing to give him and he was determined to take every bit of it.
He was determined to not be greedy for more.
But now? He was greedy.
He wanted to chain her to him.
She wanted him temporarily but he wanted her for the rest of his life.
She wanted one night from him but he wanted to keep her with him during every waking hour till the darkness descended.
Sunrises, sunsets, moon, sea... he wanted to see her face while she admired every beautiful thing in the world.
It was crazy of him to possess such thoughts for the girl he grew up with. But with every passing day in her presence, his rationality was like thin ice which was being trodden on by her.
"You are crossing the line," Diana glared at Ryle, defending another man with her words.
And Maxim held himself back from rushing forward and separating her from the amorous-looking man who was holding her hand.
She might hate him if he interfered. But he would hate himself if he didn’t.
Maxim’s lips thinned.
For fuck’s sake, who installed these emotions in human beings? Without them, life would have been easier.
He could have done what he wanted without shackles or fear of consequences.
