Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 151: Taking you out on a date
Chapter 151: Taking you out on a date
Mary’s eyes widened, ’’No wonder you rejected my invitation without a second thought.’’
She looked like she wanted to probe a little more but in the end, she did not ask further about her plans.
Mary was a stickler for rules in the first place and on top of it, she must have gotten PTSD after the encounter with Alex earlier so she did not dare to gossip.
Diana felt a bit speechless.
Old Master Qin was such a disciplined person with a heart as big as the sea, how did his grandson turn out to be a battered boat?
Later that evening.
Maxim sat on his office desk, tapping the laptop impatiently.
After every five minutes, he checked the time on his watch before he went back to gazing out of the window.
The indignance on his face was undisguised.
It has been 37 minutes and approximately 23 seconds since he went to Diana Chen.
He wanted to tell her that it was almost time to get off but the first time he called her, she did not respond to him.
He did not get a response for the second time.
The third time, he did not call out her name. He fluffed her hair and said, ’Time to go home. You need to take a rest. Also, did you eat or did you skip lunch again?’
And that was when she raised her head and looked at him with narrowed eyes as she spoke, ’Stop annoying me, Warner. I will stab you with my pen if you touch my hair again. Also, I am busy.’
No matter how Maxim thought about it, he could not help but translate all those three sentences into two lone words.
’GET LOST’
Maxim gazed at the photo frame that displayed a white page, ’’How ungrateful.’’
’’Are you talking about me?" Diana pushed open the door and stepped inside his office.
The corner of his lips twitched, ’’Where are your manners? Did you knock before entering?" he looked at her coldly from above his shoulder.
She halted in her tracks, ’’Oh? You don’t want me here? I can leave,’’ she turned around.
’’Wait,’’ Maxim pushed himself to his feet and strode towards her, ’’Did I ask you to leave?"
Diana turned around to look at him, ’’Neither can I stay, nor can I leave. What am I supposed to do? Are you muddleheaded, Warner?"
’’You called me annoying earlier,’’ Maxim gave her a pointed stare.
Diana’s brows twitched when she saw the aggrieved bunny look on his face. What the...
Why was she the bad person here?
’’You were messing with my hair. Go, mess with another girl’s hair, and see if they slap you or not. You are lucky that I can’t bring myself to do that to you,’’ she rolled her eyes.
’’You want me to mess with some girl’s hair?"
’’I mean you can try if you want to see Newton’s third law coming into effect.’’
He squinted, ’’You can dream.’’
She laughed, ’’I was busy, Warner,’’ she ruffled his hair.
’’Even I am not that busy anymore,’’ Maxim sighed, feeling her fingers gently raking inside his hair. Her casual movements slowed down.
Their eyes met and she quickly retracted her fingers from his hair.
Diana cleared her throat, ’’That’s because unlike how Mary used to organize all this for you partially, I do it all so that you can have a breather.’’
Maxim nodded, ’’And you do the best job.’’
Diana rubbed the tip of her nose, ’’I know right?"
Looking at her smug face, he could barely restrain the urge to poke her cheeks.
He still remembered that when she first joined, he had not wanted to let her work here because he thought that she would not be able to get accustomed to the environment of the hospital.
But she proved him wrong.
Not only did she get accustomed to the environment, she even did a great job at handling the work.
Either, she was a super fast learner or his girl was just good at everything.
’Who are you calling your girl, you creep?’ the devil sitting on his left shoulder spoke up, its pointed tail swinging back and forth.
The angel on his right shoulder stroked its halo, ’His childhood girl friend. In short, his girl. There is nothing wrong with it.’
’Delusions, oh, delusions,’ the devil smirked.
’’Oh, Warner. I didn’t tell you the reason I was so busy, did I?" Diana tugged his sleeve, pulling him out of his inner battle.
Maxim cleared his throat, ’’You certainly didn’t.’’
She smiled, a crafty glint sparkling in her eyes, ’’Then, I will tell you. Follow me.’’
...
"Where are we going?"
"Take a left,’’ Diana double-checked the location on her phone, "I wasted a good amount of time looking for this place that’s why it took me a long time to wrap up the remaining work. Just follow my directions. Trust me.’’
Maxim gave her a look before he focused on the road.
’’I can be trusted. I assure you,’’ Diana grabbed his hand, ’’Stop. We are here.’’
Maxim looked at the five-star restaurant that greeted his vision. A strange look flashed in his eyes.
"This is one of the places we used to frequent back in the school days,’’ Diana glanced at him, ’’This used to be a small street food store at that time and it was one of my favorites. When I chanced upon this restaurant, I realized that both the places are the same.’’
Maxim’s lips parted.
"You can’t believe it, can you? Even I was surprised," she took in the blank look on his face. Shaking her head, she said, ’’Coincidentally, it happened to be the nearest to the hospital.’’
Maxim regained his composure and turned his head to look at her, ’’Why are we here?"
Diana shoved her bag and phone onto his lap, ’’Because I am taking you out on a date.’’
"_"
It took him a few moments to let it register in his head. Maxim pressed the back of his hand on her forehead, ’’Nothing external. Do you feel feverish internally?"
Diana’s face felt hot suddenly. She shoved his hand away, ’’What are you talking about?"
"Are you sick?"
"What made you reach that conclusion?" Diana removed her beige trench coat.
Maxim glanced at the royal blue dress that she was wearing inside. Within a moment, she went from his assistant to his date and a few of his brain cells lost momentum at the sight of her.
His heart skipped a few beats even as he calmly spoke, "As far as I remember, you wanted a one-night stand before we go back to being friends. Now, you are bringing me out on a date,’’ he threw her bag and phone to the backseat before he leaned towards her, ’’Don’t tell me you have changed your mind about it. Do you want a relationship now?"
Diana cringed, "You...’’ she pressed her palm on his chest and pushed him back before she leaned towards the backseat and grabbed her bag, "Must you be so calculative about it?"
’’Of course,’’ Maxim pursed his lips.
Diana rolled her eyes, ’’Just take it as I want to eat some good food. As you know, I don’t like eating alone so I am letting you tag along.’’
Maxim squinted.
Diana smiled sweetly as she took out a lipstick from her bag. Before she could turn to the rearview mirror, the lipstick in her hand was gone.
Long fingers wrapped around her jaws as Maxim leaned towards her, ’’Don’t think I don’t know what you are thinking,’’ he met her gaze before he dropped his gaze lower and applied the lipstick on her lips.
’Even if you know, what can you do?’ Diana thought as she smacked her lips together when he pulled back.
She grabbed her phone from the back seat and checked her reflection, ’’You are good at everything,’’ she murmured, examining her lips closely.
Maxim’s gaze dropped to her lips. He averted his gaze almost instantly and glanced at her face for a moment before he alighted the car and walked to the other side.
He opened and held the door for her, ’’Regardless of what you do, my answer won’t change. It will be a no.’’
Diana alighted the car with an unbothered smile, ’’We will see about that.’’
"You don’t believe me?" he grabbed her hand when she walked past him.
Diana stopped in her tracks and turned to look at him, ’’I have been pretty passive about you. I moved out so that we don’t have to share the same space 24X7. I tried to ignore you. But were persistent about not letting me succeed in any of it. When I kissed you, you should not have kissed me back. I was treading carefully, Warner. You were the one who waved the green flag at me. Now, you don’t know how to deal with me?" she stepped towards him, stopping one step away, ’’That’s. your.problem."
His jaws clenched.
’’If you lock a thirsty person inside a room and hang a glass of water on the ceiling, of course, he will do everything to drink it. The only solution? Take the glass away.’’
Maxim watched as her eyes twinkled with mischief. She knew she was affecting him and hence, she tormented him even more on purpose, ’’So, am I the glass of water?" he stepped towards her.
Diana retreated, ’’It was just a reference. Hehe... he... *cough*"
She turned around and walked away.
Maxim followed her as the solemn expression on his face was replaced by a smile.
Two could play the game, sweetheart.
As for who the glass of water is... who knows?
