Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 150: I have plans tonight
Chapter 150: I have plans tonight
Old Master Qin let out another drawled sigh. The Chen girl was hanging right in front of Maxim like a grape but that monkey just did not how to capture it.
What a fool.
Hmm, now that he thought about it, Hazel had texted him yesterday that she had locked both of them alone before she went on her date. He wondered if there was some new progress in their status.
Some gossip would help.
He stroked his beard and pulled out his phone.
Narrowing his eyes at Alex, he turned around to left.
’’Grandpa, where are you going?"
’’To gossip.... *cough cough cough* To work, what else? Am I an imbecile like you?" Old Master Qin harrumphed before he strode away.
Alex shook his head at his demeanor as he leaned back on the desk.
His gaze landed on the two paperweights lying on the desk.
Alex’s picked them up, holding each in a hand as he examined them.
’If only you were half as good as him....’
His grandfather’s words reverberated in his mind.
’’More like... If only you did not compare me to him all the time,’’ he threw one paperweight to the opposite wall, watching it crack into pieces.
...
"Mary, are you alright?" Diana rubbed the woman’s back.
Mary grabbed her hand, ’’Why would you argue with him? He is the director’s grandson. People are already badmouthing you enough. It is tough for you as it is. I don’t want you to lose your job because of me.’’
’’You are worried about me,’’ Diana remarked with a slight smile.
’’Of course, I am. You silly girl, I know Dr. Warner is your friend. You told me about it but I still can’t help but worry. He can’t protect you all the time. It would influence his reputation amongst his peers. Not to mention that Dr. Alex holds a high position in the hospital. No matter how much the Director likes Dr. Warner, would he stand up for his grandson or him?’’ she whispered.
Diana accompanied the woman into the washroom. As Mary washed her face, Diana spoke up, "I protected Warner when we first met. Why can’t he repay me by protecting me for all my life?"
As soon as she finished speaking, she realized that there was something amiss with her words.
All her life?
What all her life?
Did she want to cling to him for all her life...? Ugh... since when did she become such a leech?
’’You protected Dr. Warner?" Mary looked up at her amidst washing her face.
’’Uh-huh.’’
"More like he must have protected you. You are a sleek liar, Diana,’’ Mary pointed an accusing finger at her, ’’You don’t even look like you are lying.’’
’’That’s because I am not lying. The Maxim back then... was too adorable. He still is but...’’ he has grown crafty. Diana laughed as she added, ’’Just looking at him softened my heart all the time.’’
’’You...’’ Mary was speechless. Softened her heart? Didn’t she tell her before that they were friends? Did friends soften hearts for each other? The young generation surely puts shame on the old. It must be a common thing between friends these days, to soften each other’s hearts.
’’But no matter what Diana, you can’t expect him to stand up for you in matters like this. It would not look good for him,’’ Mary was still worried, ’’Why would you take such a risk for me? It’s not worth it. The director won’t fire me just like that.’’
’’It’s worth it. How can you say it’s not? You are the first and only friend I made here so, of course, I will be there for you when you need me,’’ After giving it a thought, Diana added, ’’I was just joking when I said that. I don’t expect him to stand up for me all the time. He is my friend, I am not his burden and I would never want to be.’’
’’But... but...’’
’’Mary, stop worrying about me. I am more than enough to deal with such twisted doctors. You must come to me for help if you come across more such scums,’’ she patted the woman’s shoulder.
’’Okay okay, I will listen to you,’’ Mary nodded enthusiastically but her eyes teared up again, ’’But... After all, I was wrong to gossip about him. What if he holds a grudge against you? To think that I warned you to not gossip but I ended up implicating you by doing that...’’
’’It’s alright. Calm down. We both know that you did not have any ill intent. Even if it was your fault, he did not have to belittle you like that," Diana understood that Mary stuck to rules and she had never seen her gossiping before.
What happened today was purely a discussion between friends. They even talked about Maxim.
If Alex held a grudge, he could come at her. Who was scared of him?
Except for her family matters, when had she ever taken things lying down?
At this time, the door to one of the cubicles opened and Nora stepped out. She shifted her lab coat to her other hand before she washed her hands. Her small skirt barely hid her dainty thighs and her manicured nails twirled around her hair slowly.
Diana glanced at Mary who was once again trembling like a drenched puppy.
Nora came to stand in front of her.
Diana frowned when the woman scanned her from head to toe before she met her gaze, ’’Disgusting fashion sense.’’
With that said, she left the washroom.
No remarks on the conversation she overheard. Not even a glance at Mary.
But she managed to sneak in a snide remark on her dressing sense before she left.
Diana looked at her reflection in the mirror, her left brow twitching incessantly.
What the hell did Maxim’s ex-girlfriend have against her clothes?
After Mary freshened up, Diana comforted her some more before she led her to the staff room.
There was pin-drop silence the moment they stepped inside.
Diana looked around the room. Some of the people looked at her judgementally, some had their gazes neutral and observing while a few looked at her with hostility.
The atmosphere was unnecessarily awkward and their undisguised stares added to the top-notch awkwardness.
Unfortunately for them, this situation was nothing compared to the stiffness at the Chen Mansion. Instead of feeling uncomfortable, she just felt like she was taking a walk in the garden.
Diana led Mary to her seat.
’’Head Nurse, why do you look unwell?"
’’You were gone for so long and now you are coming back, looking like this.’’
’’Is everything all right?"
A few women shoved her away as they surrounded Mary.
Diana was speechless. These violent ladies.
The etiquette classes she had taken since she was young would come in handy for these people instead.
Shaking her head, Diana crossed her arms in front of her chest and leaned back on the wall to watch the spectacle.
Mary was surrounded till Diana could only see the crown of her head.
’Bam’
’’Are you people trying to suffocate me?" Mary banged her hands on her desk.
"We were just concerned about you...’’ One of the ladies mumbled.
"I am fine,’’ Mary sighed, feigning calmness.
Diana could see that she was still scared.
"Then why were you gone for so long...’’
Diana glanced at the time on her watch. The break would be over in five minutes. She still had work to do.
Just as the ladies were about to pester Mary again, Diana approached Mary’s table and spoke up before them, ’’Why were you looking for me earlier?"
’’Oh, thanks honey for reminding me about it,’’ Mary smiled kindly, ’’It almost slipped off my mind. We have kitty parties once or twice a month to de-stress. It is already the weekend so we are going out today. Will you join us?"
Diana looked around the room, ’’I won’t be able to. Sorry,’’ she shook her head at Mary.
Mary was not expecting her to reject it so fast. She stood up and dragged Diana to the corner, ’’Is it because of them?"
She could feel all the unwelcoming gazes on her, ’’Um, it has not been long since I joined so other than you, I don’t know them well. It would be hard for us to get along,’’ Mary’s face dropped and Diana quickly added, ’’But I can assure you that I did not pass it because of that. I have other plans tonight so I won’t be able to join you.’’
