Crashing into an Old Flame -
Chapter 143: Loves me-loves me not
Chapter 143: Loves me-loves me not
But then again, many other matters also spiraled out of her thoughts and control.
Diana raised her hand and touched her swollen lips as she glanced at her reflection in the mirrored walls.
’No.’
’No.’
’No.’
His straightforward rejection echoed in her head and her lips slowly curled up as the pad of her index finger grazed her bottom lips.
If it was before, his rejection would have stung her. She might have started wondering what she was thinking when she offered him such an absurd proposal.
She would have had second thoughts and those would have led to other hasty decisions like ignoring him or trying to deny how she felt.
But his rejection now...
Diana laughed, ’’He is so silly...’’ she squatted on the floor and picked up a Chanel bag, ’’To think that he would reject me after kissing me like he was starving.’’
Her smugness faded the moment she saw what was inside the bag.
She checked a few other bags but all of them were the same.
Sheer. Almost transparent nightgowns.
Diana tried to open the wardrobe, only to discover that the doors were locked.
She looked at her robe-clad body, then at the nightgowns before she closed her eyes.
As thick-skinned as she was, how was she supposed to wear this and go in front of Maxim after she freshly declared war? He would undoubtedly think that she was trying to seduce him.
What if... that poor sheep was scared away by her?
...
Maxim was still hyperventilating under the blanket when the door to his room opened and closed.
’’Are you asleep?" Diana’s soft voice was like a curse, reminding him of the torture he was trying so hard to forget.
His body acted on its own and heated up.
Maxim closed his eyes.
She wanted a friends with benefits from him? She could dream.
’’You fell asleep already,’’ she sighed softly.
The corners of his lips twitched. Yes, take it as I am sleeping and leave before my body self detonates.
’’Well, not that I mind,’’ Diana let out another long sigh.
Maxim’s brows tugged together in confusion. She did not mind what?
He wanted to ask but since he had already pretended to have fallen asleep, it was too late for him to drop the act.
His thoughts trailed off when he felt the mattress dipping and his breathing fastened.
They were on the same bed. There was only Angel sleeping between them.
Maxim’s fingers curled into a fist as he felt the heat rising in his body.
Did she trust him that much? Or did she really not mind it at all?
Did she think that he would not pin her hands above her head and kiss her till she begged him to let her go? Or did she believe that he was a saint that would withstand such torture?
Diana was speechless as she looked at the unmovable blanket that covered Maxim’s face. Not even a strand of his hair was peeking out.
She could bet on the first official job of her life that he was wide awake under that thick blanket.
She propped her head on her fist and glanced at Angel’s sleeping face before quietly looking at Maxim. Since he was not responding willingly, fine then.
Maxim did not know how long he stayed still in that position.
After a few minutes, when there were no further movements from her, he removed the blanket from his face.
But in the next moment, he froze.
’’Hey there,’’ Diana had her head propped up on her elbow as she looked at him in amusement.
Maxim blinked.
Diana blinked back.
’’When did you come?’’ he asked.
’’When you were taking a nap, I suppose,’’ Diana flashed a wide smile at him.
His gaze lingered on her damp hair for a moment before trailing down to her neck.
He averted his gaze, ’’Why are you dressed like this?"
’’Oh, it was cold,’’ Diana glanced at the robe that she wore over a long nightgown which was a little bit decent amidst the crowd of others.
’’Are you still cold?" Maxim’s gaze shot back to her face.
’’No, I am much better.’’
’’I see.’’
’’Hmm.’’
’Silence’
Before the atmosphere could turn further awkward, Maxim left the room.
Looking at his retreating back, Diana sat up on the bed and removed the bathrobe from her body as she glanced at the closing door.
She leaned back on the headboard and glanced at the tattoo sitting on the corner of her wrist.
’’Hmm, would he think I am too risque?" Suddenly, she started second-guessing everything she did today.
A deal? A proposal?
She had moved out on an impulse previously so that they would go on their different paths, and probably would only come across each other during work hours. That too only for a few minutes throughout the day. She had believed that not seeing him 24X7 would help her condition.
But it did not. So, now what?
Should she see her plan to the end by any means?
Diana glanced at the opposite wall.
What if he kept rejecting her or what if she made him uncomfortable with her approach?
Diana shook her head. It was better to drop this idea of starting a temporary relationship. Fewer complications.
But...
After she voiced it out today, she did not want to back out from what she felt for him.
She was attracted to her best friend and at this point, it was incurable. In ancient times, poisons cured poison. Since he was the cause of her restlessness, he is the only cure for it at this point.
’’Ugh,’’ Diana massaged her brows and glanced at the closed door, ’’Fine, I will just leave it up to him. If he comes back to the room even just to show his face, I will not give up on my proposal. If he does not come back, then I will treat it as if today never happened.’’
When she thought about it in that way, she was a bit comforted.
Diana glanced at the closed door in anticipation.
As the minutes trickled by, Diana’s gaze remained fixated on the door.
When she was a teenager, she had seen girls her age plucking rose petals one by one while muttering ’he loves me’ and ’he loves me not’. The last remaining petal of their rose either lifted their spirits or ruined them for days.
She had always found it cringe and silly. She had looked at them condescendingly, wondering why they were being so stupid and wasting their time by doing something so worthless.
And it must be karma that she was now sitting there, looking back and forth between the clock and the door.
Although the circumstances were different and it was not about her crush liking her back or not, but it still counted.
30 minutes passed by and her eyelids started drooping.
Forget it. Why would he come back?
She sighed and pulled the blanket before placing her head on the pillow.
’Click’
The rate at which she sat up on the bed nearly cracked her bones.
Diana quickly sneaked a peek at Angel. A relieved sigh escaped her mouth when she saw that Angel was still fast asleep.
When Maxim entered the room, he found Diana’s gaze plastered to him.
And her eyes seemed to burn with something as she watched him.
The corner of his lips twitched, ’’What is it?"
Her eyes turned normal, ’’Nothing at all,’’ she smiled fawningly.
He placed the food tray on the bedside table before eyeing her doubtfully, ’’Wait here.’’
’’Waiting,’’ Diana’s smile turned even wider.
She had the blankets up to her neck and her damp blonde hair framed her face. Her green eyes seemed to be glowing under the dim lights as she flashed him her widest smile.
For some reason... she resembled a cat.
Maxim shook his head before he left the room. He went to his mother’s room and grabbed the hair dryer before going back to his room.
Much to his surprise, Diana was still sitting in that position. It looked like she had not moved an inch after he left. Her eyes glowed once again when she saw him.
Once again, he wished he could see what went on inside that head of hers.
He stepped towards the bed before extending his hand to her, ’’Come with me,’’ The noise from the hairdryer might wake Angel up so it was better to be cautious.
Looking at her damp hair made him feel distressed. Just how long was she planning to sit like that if he did not come here?
She placed her hand on his, without any questions before she pushed herself to her feet.
As the blankets slid down her body, a black lace nightgown greeted his vision.
It was not a revealing piece but the nightgown hugged her curves in all the right places.
Maxim: "_"
Maxim’s throat ran dry and he averted his gaze, wondering whose face he saw early in the morning to end up being tested throughout the day.
