Chapter 42: Unplanned for
Bai yue might be poor, but audacity was something she had in abundance. It was either going to be her savior, or going to be the death of her.
Her fingers resisted on the oakwook door and she thought to rethink her life decisions. She took a deep breath and knocked.
You only live once or some such sayings like that. But no one talks about how hard living was.
Or how failure was always easier and success was so hard to come by.
"Bai yue! I was just going to send for you. It’s good that you’re here."
Bai yue sat down, her apprehension turning to wariness. The vice president of the school don’t just send for you because she misses your presence.
"Remember the talent hunt we did last time?"
Remember? She was asking if Bai yue remembered? It was all she could do not to think of it every minute of her day. As it was, it was her waking thought and also the last one she had before sleeping.
But perhaps that wasn’t the information the vice president was after, because her gaze turned speculative.
It was then Bai yue noticed her face was hot. She patted her cheeks and managed a meek smile.
"Yes ma’am. I was a participant."
The vice president nodded.
"Well, yes. And I have good news for you."
Bai yue sat straighter on the chair. Good news were hard to come by around here.
"You’re one of the few selected to a one on one meeting with the sponsors." She beamed at her.
Bai yue tried to find the good news in that. She could be like that sometimes. Looking for the good in everybody and everything.
Only this time she couldn’t come up with something.
The vice president was annoyed at Bai yue’s considerable lack of enthusiasm.
"That means you have a higher chance chance of being sponsored. If your presentation is good enough, you’ll even be offered many opportunities you haven’t think about. "
Bai yue finally managed to summon a smile close to enthusiastic without looking insane. She still couldn’t process the information.
That would be after getting out of this oppressive faded white walls.
She took a deep of fresh air and thoughts swirled inside her brain. Each one making a circle, and eventually puffing off into dust.
Food. Food was just what she needs to get back her bearing.
Getting to the cafeteria, she ordered burger and french fries with coke. Loading up on calories but who cares? Definitely not her.
The first three bites of the greasy burger did a lot to reset her brain.
She tried to catalogue her feelings. Tangled and rough as they seemed.
She was apprehensive and scared. Where she should be overjoyed. Maybe that’ll come later.
The event of the previous encounter with Lin wei played inside her brain. From the moment of laughter, to where they were yanked straight into an unpleasant reality that came in the form of Ezekiel Wang’s cousin, Lu Chen.
She was half sure he had add two and two together, and came to the conclusion that she was mad.
She drained the coke and sighed when there was nothing inside the bottle.
She grabbed her bag and went to class. The class was boring and she caught herself drooling a time or two.
"Miss Bai yue, care to tell us what you think about it?"
Bai yue peeled her eyes open, drop her bag on the seat beside her and groaned. The whole class, bleary eyed as they were, stared up at her.
Well oh well. She tried to think about what the last word she heard was.
"While we’re still young Miss Bai yue."
Bai yue scowled and glanced at the projector screen. Antimicrobial properties of garlic.
"I think it can either be enhanced or decreased, depending on the method with which it was added to the food." She finished doggedly.
The lecturer sniffed, but having no retribution.
"Crass," she glanced at Bai yue pointedly, "as it was explained. It is true. Garlic isn’t just for flavor, it’s antimicrobial properties can’t be denied."
Bai yue let the words washed over her as the woman drone on and on about type of garlic and their uses.
Honestly classes like this were akin to torture. She’d rather be in the kitchen, with chef drilling her about either cutting the filet too thick or thin.
Finally the class ended and there was only blessed silence.
She grabbed her bag and headed out.
Her phone rang shrilly. She cursed soundly as she picked.
"Is this miss Bai yue?" The voice was weary.
That gave her a start. At least it wasn’t her creditors.
"Yes, this phone belongs to her." Better not be specific Incase something is up.
"We’ve been trying to get in contact with miss Lin wei for the past three days. You number was listed as one of the emergency contact for Mrs Lin,"
Bai yue’s heart jumped into her throat. She clutched her bag tightly.
"Is..is she okay?" No she wasn’t. If she was, would she be in the hospital, getting treatments for cancer?
But she dreaded the man’s answer. Lord, let her be alive, she thought feeling feverish.
"She will be, if can get her tested and treated soon. Her white blood cells keep depleting which with her medication, isn’t supposed to be. But this isn’t a conversation to be had on the phone."
"Yes, yes. I’ll be on my way." She said thickly.
Her heart thudded dully against her ribcage, fear latched unto her throat, making it difficult to swallow.
She tried, but her tongue felt as dried as paper. This development was quite unplanned for.
Lin wei was trying her best, trying to raise the money for her mother’s surgery and here was anoth
er thing that needs taking care of.
She boarded a taxi with a heavy heart, praying that this isn’t going to be something huge.
But deep down in her heart, she knew it wasn’t possible.
