Chapter 26: Priorities

Lin wei had always wondered why hierarchy existed. Why must we live in accordance to our worth?

It was for this reason. To catalogue the hierarchy of catastrophic events that had happened in her life. And duly rate them.

As things goes, this list was pretty high, considering she’s not even half the average lifespan of a person. But this, this would have to take the cake.

Karma was a bitch who was always one step ahead, waiting patiently to push you over the ledge.

Lin wei stopped laughing, she wiped her face and it came out wet. Bai yue sat back on the bed, her grizzly hair scratching against Lin wei’s cheeks as she sculpted her in for a hug.

"Everything will be fine, wei wei. You’ll see," she gently wiped Lin wei’s tears.

Lin wei clutched Bai yue’s arm tightly against her chest. Her only link to reality. The logical thing was to press the reject button, switched off her phone and throw it into the Pacific ocean.

Perhaps burn it first.

But her fingers trembled badly as she took inventory of what was at stake for her. The sole reason she’d plunged headfirst into this foolhardy mission.

And that was to save her mother. Cancer treatment cost a arm and leg. A kidney too and if things progressed nicely, perhaps she’ll get to keep her brain.

It took a while for her to notice the absence of Bai yue’s soothing warmth. She wiped the snot off her face, sat straight and squared her shoulder.

She came to a stressed induced conclusion. She was going to do it. And she’ll do a damn nice job of it too.

Bai yue came back in with a steaming pot of instant ramen and runny eggs. A luxury Lin wei hadn’t been able to afford for a while now.

Bai yue’s maniacal grin widened when she saw the hungry look on Lin wei’s face.

"The egg’s at least a day and three hours expired." She informed gleefully.

"Your brain expired ages ago, you’ll still here aren’t you?" She got off from the bed.

They sat down in companionable silence, wolfing down the soupy ramen.

Bai yue produced two cups of instant coffee. Such was life, when you need to avoid exorbitant electricity bill.

Or when you only have a dollar, could be one of the two.

"What now?" Lin wei squeaked.

"Now, now..we strategize. Say, about how much do you have in your account. Everything you can scrap together in two days?" Bai yue brought out a calculator.

Lin wei wanted to laugh. But she also wanted to cry. She wanted so badly for her mother to get well, but, if only one gets what they want.

"I think about 300 dollars and some fifty cents." At Bai yue’s disbelieving stare, Lin wei shrugged her shoulder self consciously.

"But I have ten chicken coupon. Oh and three coupon from the local rice cake seller. Five whole coupons for miss meowgly’s tuna." Lin wei laughed.

Bai yue cackled and soon enough they were both laughing like there was something funny.

"Well, food and basic stuff apart, I think I could scrap a thousand dollars together." Bai yue mused out loud. A pencil was tucked into her bun and she was tapping her chin.

Lin wei’s eyes widen.

"Yueyue!! Where will you get that amount of money?"

"Steal it." Bai yue deadpanned.

"oh for God’s sake I won’t! This is the price for winning third place at the competition." She rolled her eyes.

Lin wei could only hug her dearest friend in gratitude. This girl was willing to give out her hard earned money.

She rapped Lin wei’s head with her knuckles.

"Ow ow ow." She groaned.

"Whatever is going on in that coconut head of yours, save it for the garbage can where it belongs."

"What now?" Lin wei asked seriously.

Now that they know they could scrape such a sum together, what do they do with it? Go on vacation? Start a ukulele business?

"Now, we go shopping." A paper was seemingly snatched from thin air.

Fueled by ramen, the events of today had receded into the hazy part of her mind, swirling and swirling but not really making an appearance.

Hierarchy of priorities or something like that.

They had both reversed into survival mode. Lin wei could feel her heart pounding, adrenaline coursed through her veins, pumping liquid courage.

Honestly, another cup of coffee really wouldn’t go amiss.

"Clothes, shoes, bags, make-up, everything. If you’re doing this, you’re doing it all the way. And damn well excelling at it too. I won’t have anything less." Bai yue ranted off.

Lin wei wanted to voice her misgivings, but best stay away from the flying pencil. Once Bai yue was cloaked in this- I’ll solve all your problem for you-phase-, it’s better to lie low. Literally.

"You’re no longer Lin wei. Those people want nothing to do with her. They didn’t hire Lin wei, but they hired Victoria Wang. Fashionable, rich, and a bit low on intelligent but really good with kids, correct?"

"Pray tell, why are you going to cooking academy when you could become a movie director?" Lin wei quizzed.

Bai yue whacked her across her head.

"Concentrate." She said sternly.

Lin wei raised a salute. The nervous energy that gripped her and wedged icicles beneath her shoulder blades was slowly diminishing, leaving her hazy mind a bit clearer.

She could do this. Become someone that wants her to be so she could have what she needs. Which was money.

Lots and lots of it.

Which in reality, Ezekiel Wang,(an unfortunate development when her made-up name corresponded with his) has lots and lots of.

Her mother said Lin wei was too stubborn for her good. But that was good.

Stubbornness was needed, sheer will power to stand when life barrels toward you.

Especially when it comes i

n form of a powerful icy blizzard such as the infamous CEO of Wang corporation.

Lin wei could only hope she’d be long gone before the blizzard could harm her.
