Chapter 39: 039: Dreamed about me? (1 more update)
Ruiyin Group’s grand meeting room was filled with high-level executives seated around a heavy, deep-red mahogany conference table.
Quan Yu sat at the head of the table. He had changed his clothes but was still dressed in a black shirt and black trousers, which made his sharp features look even more dominant and icily arrogant. Even though most of the executives seated below him were over fifty, Quan Yu, who had just passed thirty, did not seem any less imposing. Some people are born leaders. Quan Yu, at his age, already possessed vast experience that lent an incredibly intimidating air of authority to his presence.
When he looked down at his phone, the vice president who was speaking unconsciously paused. Once Quan Yu finished and gestured for him to continue, the vice president resumed speaking.
Quan Yu listened perfunctorily.
The delicate and beautiful face of Ning Guiwan involuntarily swam into his view. Even when she was smiling, her smile so radiant and bright, that brilliance was only superficial; deep within her eyes lay nothing but pallor and emptiness. The kind of innate cheerfulness that seemed to radiate from her very bones had vanished completely.
Quan Yu’s expression grew colder, and he suddenly pulled a pack of cigarettes and a lighter from his pocket.
Seeing this, everyone below quietly sucked in a breath of cool air. Having worked under President Quan for so long, they all knew that whenever he smoked, it meant he was in an extremely foul mood, even if his face betrayed no sign of it.
The atmosphere in the meeting room inexplicably tensed, like a drawn bow. Everyone held their breath, not daring to make a sound. Quan Yu’s management style was as swift and resolute as his business dealings, and he never showed mercy.
「...」
Ning Guiwan slept fitfully that night. Her dreamscape was chaotic, with scenes flashing by as if on a carousel: one moment, the image of her mother lying in a pool of blood; the next, Quan Xiangru and her father stood before her, shaking their heads in disappointment, calling her shameless.
In the end, the scene shifted. Quan Yu looked at her indifferently, yet his tone was very firm as he said, "Why worry about disappointing others over something you never did?"
"Ning Guiwan..."
In the haze, she heard someone calling her name, the voice so familiar.
Consciousness slowly returning, she opened her eyes. Ning Guiwan was slightly surprised.
"Uncle Yu?" She sat up in bed, glancing around. Lai Yang was nowhere to be seen.
It was quiet outside the family rest area as well.
Quan Yu sat by the bed, his deep brown, glassy eyes gazing at her calmly and quietly.
Ning Guiwan shuffled back a bit, inconspicuously pulling the blanket higher. Her gaze diverted, falling on Quan Yu’s impeccable black handmade leather shoes. Because he was sitting, the hem of his trousers was slightly raised, revealing a segment of black business socks. This man, it seems, has a preference for black, she thought.
While she was momentarily distracted, Quan Yu suddenly reached out, his palm gliding over her forehead.
The girl’s skin was delicate and soft.
Quan Yu looked down at the moisture on his palm. "Having a nightmare? You’re sweating so much."
Ning Guiwan’s brows furrowed slightly. "Not really..."
"Dreamed about me?" he asked, right on the mark.
Ning Guiwan looked up at him sharply. How did he know?
"Did I bully you?" Quan Yu’s face was devoid of any superfluous expression, but a faint trace of amusement lurked in his placid, glassy eyes.
Ning Guiwan’s expression became somewhat unnatural. She must have said something in her sleep, she surmised.
Quan Yu watched her evasive demeanor, the amusement in his eyes deepening. "You kept calling my name, and you also said... don’t..."
"Don’t what?"
The man spoke slowly and deliberately, his tone like casual small talk, but his words were obviously teasing.
Ning Guiwan’s cheeks suddenly flushed crimson.
