Chapter 35: 035: Banished from Canada, never to return to the country

"Old men are really enigmatic," Lai Yang pretended to shake her head dramatically. With Quan Yu not around, she instantly perked up. "One minute he’s eating, the next he isn’t. My future second aunt’s life isn’t looking too bright..."

Ning Guiwan continued to eat, head lowered.

With few customers in the restaurant, the trio already stood out. Quan Yu’s mature demeanor, suggesting he had seen it all, combined with his notable height and appearance, had long made him the subject of the waitstaff’s whispers.

Overhearing faint discussions nearby, Lai Yang sighed like an old soul. "Look, my second uncle can charm a whole host of young ladies wherever he goes."

After finishing his call, Quan Yu didn’t return to his seat. Instead, he stood under the hot pot restaurant’s modest doorway and lit a cigarette.

When Ning Guiwan looked up, she happened to see him through the glass door. He flicked the lighter’s lid shut, exhaled a slender stream of smoke, and tucked the lighter into his pocket. His every movement and pose exuded leisure, without a hint of impatience.

Quan Yu finished his cigarette and went to the cashier to pay the bill.

Lai Yang didn’t dare make him wait too long. She hurriedly finished her meal and pulled Ning Guiwan along to leave with him.

Shortly after the car started, she noticed a milk tea shop still open, which tempted her. But when she turned her head and saw her second uncle’s emotionless face, she didn’t dare ask for anything more.

Quan Yu saw immediately that she had something on her mind and spoke up, "If you have something to say, say it."

By then, they had already passed the milk tea shop.

Lai Yang glanced toward the back of the car and said, "I wanted some milk tea, but we’ve already passed the shop. Never mind..."

Hearing this, Quan Yu directly ordered Ren Yong to turn the car around.

Lai Yang couldn’t help but feel flattered once more. Why was my second uncle so accommodating all of a sudden? It hadn’t been like this before.

"I’ll go then, I’ll be back soon!" As soon as the car stopped in front of the milk tea shop, Lai Yang pushed open the door and dashed out.

Ning Guiwan had been about to say, "I’ll come with you," but the words never escaped her lips.

In the cramped and silent space, one’s senses became sharper.

Ning Guiwan couldn’t ignore the strong presence of the man beside her, nor his direct gaze.

Reaching for the car door handle, Ning Guiwan turned to Quan Yu with a faint smile. "I’ll go check on Lai Yang."

"Does it still hurt?" the man asked, his question unexpected.

Ning Guiwan paused for a couple of seconds before realizing what he was referring to.

Touching the spot above her right eyebrow, she smiled gently. "It doesn’t feel like anything anymore."

Quan Yu nodded, grabbed the suit jacket draped over the armrest, and tossed it to her. "It’s cold at night. Put this on before you get out."

The fabric of the custom-made suit was comfortable to the touch and seemed to still hold the man’s body heat. Ning Guiwan looked at her own exposed shoulders, a smile playing on her red lips. She didn’t refuse. "Thank you."

After slipping on the suit jacket, she got out of the car and walked towards Lai Yang.

Quan Yu leaned back in his seat, his hands resting on the armrest, his gaze fixed outside the vehicle.

The suit jacket reached her thighs, its hem revealing a sliver of her long red skirt. It was like a fierce, unrestrained flame, drawing the burning gaze of passersby to her snow-white, straight legs.

Quan Yu raised his hand, lowered the car window, and lit another cigarette for himself.

Ren Yong caught sight of this in the rearview mirror and spoke up with a smile, "Sir, you should smoke less."

Quan Yu glanced at him, his eyes cool. "Has the old lady been talking to you again?"

Ren Yong chuckled. "The Matriarch is just concerned about you."

Quan Yu slowly exhaled a cloud of smoke. Finally, he let out an ambiguous chuckle, one that seemed both mocking and indifferent.

...

"Did my second uncle give that to you to wear?" Lai Yang asked, seeing Ning Guiwan wearing Quan Yu’s suit jacket.

"Yes, he said it gets cold at night."

Lai Yang glanced several times at the Maybach and lowered her voice to whisper in Ning Guiwan’s ear, "Coming back this time, I’ve noticed my second uncle is really different from before."

Ning Guiwan looked down at the small and unique lapel pin on the suit jacket. That man certainly has a distinct taste in clothing.

"How is he different?"

"My eldest uncle and his wife have been married for decades without children, you know that." Lai Yang was referring to Quan Yu’s half-brother, Quan Heng; his wife was, naturally, He Yunqing.

Ning Guiwan nodded; of course, she knew.

Everyone in Shencheng knew the Quan family’s eldest son had no children.

Quan Xiangru was their adopted child, not their biological son.

"Do you know why they don’t have children?" whispered Lai Yang, her voice growing softer, her usual cheerful expression replaced by a solemn, cautious look.

Ning Guiwan shook her head.

"Actually, it’s not entirely true they didn’t have any. Sixteen years ago, my aunt was pregnant with a boy. At that time, my eldest uncle was the heir to Ruiyin. If the child had been born, he surely would have been raised as the heir. But when my aunt was six months pregnant..."

Lai Yang glanced at the Maybach again, fear creeping into her beautiful eyes. "...she was pushed into the swimming pool by my second uncle..."

Surprise registered on Ning Guiwan’s face.

"After that, the child didn’t survive, and because of that, my aunt also lost the ability to have more children."

"Everyone said my second uncle did it for the position of heir to the family enterprise. He was only sixteen years old at that time. To have such thoughts at such a young age, how frightening!"

Ning Guiwan couldn’t help but look towards the Maybach as well.

She couldn’t see the man’s expression, but she could imagine it. Surely cold, distant, and unemotional.

"Then what happened?" Ning Guiwan asked.

Lai Yang said, "Then he was banished to Canada, forbidden ever to return."

Ning Guiwan didn’t know how to describe her feelings at that moment. "But he still came back."

"Could he not return?" Lai Yang said. "My eldest uncle deeply loved his wife and didn’t want to divorce and remarry just to have children. Without a child, what would become of the family business? They had no choice but to call back my second uncle."

"However, the original plan was for my second uncle to marry, have a son, and then have that son adopted by my eldest uncle to inherit the family business. But somehow, my second uncle used some means to become the Chairman and CEO of the group himself..."

...

On the way back, Ning Guiwan held her milk tea, her mind full of the information Lai Yang had given her.

Even though she was quite close to Mrs. Quan, no one had ever mentioned these things to her.

She couldn’t help but turn to look at the profound and handsome man beside her. Was he really as ruthless as Lai Yang had said? Or... was he like her?

Somehow, Ning Guiwan felt a strange kinship with this man whom the entire city feared.
