Chapter 34: 034: How does it taste? (2 more updates)
Almost the moment Lai Yang finished speaking, a Maybach smoothly pulled up beside Quan Yu. Its mature and impressive design further accentuated the man’s commanding presence and distinguished status.
Ren Yong got out of the car and first said to Quan Yu, "Sir, the car is ready." He then turned to greet Ning Guiwan and Lai Yang.
Lai Yang was momentarily speechless. So, they weren’t waiting for her. Awkward.
Quan Yu’s gaze swept over Ning Guiwan’s bare shoulders, finally resting on his niece’s exposed shoulder.
He spoke in a flat tone, "Wearing so little, aren’t you cold?"
Lai Yang looked down at herself. She hadn’t felt cold before, but now that Quan Yu asked, she actually did.
Snuggling closer to Ning Guiwan, she smiled sweetly. "I won’t be cold once we’re in the car. Xiaowan and I drove here, so maybe we should first..." As she spoke, she timidly pointed towards the parking lot.
Quan Yu shifted his stance. His white shirt, bathed in the dim yellow light of the streetlamp, seemed to be edged with a golden shadow. He nonchalantly flicked the ash from his cigarette, his voice mild. "Driving after drinking? Are you trying to get a DUI?"
"I only had one drink..." Lai Yang whispered. "I can’t be that unlucky, can I?"
"Besides, Xiaowan and I are planning to get hot pot, so we won’t take up more of Second Uncle’s time..."
Quan Yu glanced at his watch, his calm yet compelling gaze sweeping over the two girls. "Get in the car."
Lai Yang didn’t dare haggle any further. With a woeful expression, she glanced at the front passenger seat, then at the seat beside Quan Yu, and decisively chose the front passenger seat.
Ning Guiwan remained silent for two seconds before sitting next to Quan Yu.
The car started moving slowly. With Quan Yu present, Lai Yang fell completely silent and quietly played with her phone.
Ning Guiwan focused on the nighttime scenery outside, but the window curtains suddenly closed without a sound.
She was startled for a moment.
Beside her, she heard the gentle gurgle of liquid being poured into a glass. The unhurried sound conjured an image of the pourer’s leisurely ease.
"Second Uncle, are you drinking?" Lai Yang twisted around, leaning over the back of her seat, her eyes fixed on him eagerly.
"Want some?"
Quan Yu filled two glasses and placed the bottle back into a slot on the solid wood console.
Lai Yang nodded. After a pause, she asked in a small voice, "May I?"
Quan Yu didn’t put on an elder’s airs to lecture her about underage drinking. Instead, he handed the glass that had been closer to Ning Guiwan over to Lai Yang.
Tilting his head slightly, his deep gaze fixed on Ning Guiwan. He picked up the glass closer to himself and asked in a low voice, "Will you have some?"
The interior lights were on, casting a soft yellow glow that made the man’s sharply chiseled features appear even more distinct.
The atmosphere was tinged with a strange awkwardness. Ning Guiwan, also wanting something to break the tension, reached for the glass Quan Yu offered and absently thanked him.
Quan Yu appreciated good wine, so naturally, the wine he had was of the finest quality.
Ning Guiwan took a sip. She faintly tasted a hint of smoke, and her dark brows slowly knitted together. After a moment, she turned to look at Quan Yu.
Ever since they got in the car, this man had been drinking. This glass... it was probably the one he had been using all along. She couldn’t believe she hadn’t realized it immediately.
Just then, Lai Yang finished her glass and turned around, asking for more.
Quan Yu poured her another, his voice low and deep as he asked, "How’s the taste?"
Grinning broadly, Lai Yang nodded, eager to flatter him. "Second Uncle’s wine is, of course, the best!"
To Ning Guiwan, however, his question sounded entirely different.
Placing her glass back on the console, she said somewhat petulantly, "It’s just alright."
"Hmm?" Lai Yang smacked her lips. "I don’t think so. It’s from Aubicon Winery in France; it’s quite mellow."
Ning Guiwan said nothing more.
Quan Yu also remained silent. He reached out, picked up the glass Ning Guiwan had drunk from, raised it to his lips, and drained it in one gulp.
Ning Guiwan’s face burned. This man was simply... unbelievable.
The Maybach stopped in front of a hot pot restaurant.
Lai Yang was stunned for a moment. Then, realizing her Second Uncle was actually going to join them for hot pot, she looked utterly flattered.
The three of them got a table for four. At this hour, there were few diners in the restaurant, and the staff had already begun cleaning up.
Lai Yang ordered a large selection of her favorite dishes, and Ning Guiwan added a few more. Quan Yu, however, took no part in the ordering process, sitting opposite them, detached and smoking a cigarette.
The hot pot broth arrived quickly, followed by the various dishes. Steam, thick with the potent aroma of hot pot, rose and wafted through the air. Amidst this, Quan Yu’s unflustered demeanor and noble air seemed utterly out of place.
Seeing that her Second Uncle hadn’t even touched his chopsticks, Lai Yang attentively picked up a piece of shrimp paste and placed it on the small plate in front of him.
"This is delicious. You should try it."
Quan Yu glanced at it indifferently, tapped the ash from his cigarette, and didn’t move.
Lai Yang assumed he didn’t like it. Just then, Ning Guiwan, wearing disposable gloves, peeled a shrimp and placed it in Lai Yang’s bowl. Lai Yang immediately transferred the shrimp to her Second Uncle’s plate, fawning, "Xiaowan peeled this shrimp. You should try it."
Quan Yu first raised his eyes to look at Ning Guiwan, then picked up his chopsticks with his left hand, the one holding his cigarette.
Delighted, Lai Yang thought he liked shrimp. She quickly put on a pair of gloves herself and began diligently peeling shrimp for her Second Uncle.
She absolutely had to win her Second Uncle’s favor. In a little while, she would need him to put in a good word for her with her father, who was far away in Singapore, so she could stay in the country a bit longer.
However, though she peeled one shrimp after another until they formed a small mound on his plate, Quan Yu never reached for his chopsticks again.
"Second Uncle, why aren’t you eating?"
Just as she finished asking, Quan Yu’s phone, resting on the table, began to vibrate. The buzzing sound seemed particularly dull in the relatively quiet space.
"You two go ahead and eat," he said, picking up his phone and walking out.
Lai Yang pouted. All those shrimp she had painstakingly peeled...
Ning Guiwan glanced at Quan Yu’s retreating back as he answered his phone. Then, she reached over and took the plate of shrimp. "If he’s not eating them, fine. We will."
