Chapter 148: 148. Side Story 12: Alan’s leaving.
As she had requested, Alan attended the party with Champagne and the twins. It was a warm simple party with just people from the church and some others around.
All through the party, Alan’s eyes were on her and only her he couldn’t help it. She was beautiful.
Champagne noticed this and teased him for it. She had whispered to him saying, "She’s totally legal now." Alan just laughed it off with a hidden blush on his cheeks.
After some time Janey cut her cake and although her mother and champagne were the ones passing around slices of cake to people who wanted a taste, Janey had taken a slice in a small plate and walked up to Alan herself. She couldn’t hide the blush on her face as he smiled and accepted it.
All the while Mr Conroy’s eyes were always going back to Alan. He did just like the fact that someone was trying to steal his baby girl. But like his wife once said, he forgot that he also stole someone’s baby girl too.
Soon it was time to present gifts and everyone who had brought something for the celebrant began presenting her with gifts.
When Mr Conroy saw that Alan didn’t give her anything, he whispered to his wife, "See, I told you he is good for nothing. He looks well to do so why will he come here without a gift for her? He just came for the free food, I tell you. And Janey, that crazy girl, has been feeding him everything like he’s some kind of special VIP guest when he didn’t even have the decency to get her a gift."
Mrs Conroy looked at her husband and just shook her head
She knew he could be quite petty when he wanted to, so this was nothing new to her.
"Oh stop being so bitter." She says to her husband as she hands over plates of food on a tray to Champagne to pass out to some more guests who just walked in. "And don’t go around saying things you don’t know."
"What? I’m being bitter? Why do you always take his side? Am I not your husband? Shouldn’t you take my side no matter what?"
"Honey, look." She holds on to his head and turns it towards Janey. "Look at her wrist." She says. "The young man you call good for nothing got her that for her birthday." She explains and his eyes widen as if to say,’ Ooh’.
"And guess what honey," She says as she takes her hands off his face. "It’s got real diamonds on it and I don’t think Janey knows it but that is real gold. Nothing lower than 14k from what I saw."
"What?! He’s trying to use expensive jewelry to steal my baby girl." At this point, Mrs Conroy could see that nothing she said was going to make her husband see the man in a better light unless he sincerely wanted to.
"First you complained he didn’t get her any gift and now that you know he did get her a gift, you’re complaining that he’s trying to steal her using an expensive gift. What do you want, my dear husband?" She says with a soft laugh.
"I want him to stay away from my baby girl." The man grumbles.
"Hasn’t it occurred to you that your ’baby girl’ just clocked twenty and is now at an age where she’ll seek companionship outside her normal family circle? Your ’baby girl’ has grown up darling. You can’t keep her forever, just like I left my normal family circle to be with you and make a new family, Janey also will one day leave us and make a new family." Sweetly she explained to her grumbling husband.
"But does it have to be him?"
"What do you dislike about him in particular? Truthfully honey, think about it and tell me."
"Well, I dislike the fact that he’s pursuing my daughter."
"See, you’d have disliked any other person, be it him or not! You are just being childish now, honey. You were exactly like this when Bella brought Hanson home but look how well you and Hanson are today. So why are you doing it again? "
"Maybe. Well, fine, I agree I would have had a problem with whomever Janey liked just like I had a problem with Hanson, but this guy just has the face of a player. He looks like he messes around with every girl he sees."
"You know what honey, I give up. Think whatever you want I’m sure if he’s God’s will for our Janey you’ll end up sorting things out yourselves. For now, I give up."
With those last words, Mrs Conroy forbade any more buzzing grumbling from her husband about Alan for the rest of the evening and the man held his peace.
After staying for the cake cutting and the gift presentations, Alan finally stood up to leave because he had something he needed to go do. He didn’t want to just leave without informing the birthday girl, but she’d been dancing and laughing with her friends and he didn’t want to disturb her so quietly, he informed Champagne he was leaving and stepped out.
He glanced at Janey one last time before stepping out of the house. But just as he walked away from the door, one of Janey’s friends tapped her and pointed out the window, "Your crush is leaving."
Janey instantly walked past her friends and ran out of the house. "Alan!" She called out to him and he turned.
"Why are you out here? You should be inside with your friends."
"You’re leaving?" She asks with her chest heaving up and down.
"I didn’t want to pull you from the midst of your friends. I asked Champagne to tell you." He explains.
"Y_you were uncomfortable weren’t you?" She asks with her head and eyes downcast. Her fingers played with her dress and she was hating herself for selfishly inviting him when she knew it would turn out like this.
"Well, I don’t think uncomfortable is the word. It did feel a little weird but," his hand touches her chin and he lifts her head so she would look at him but her eyes remained shadowed by her lashes. "It was fun watching you have fun." He confesses. "I enjoyed watching you laugh without restraints."
Her lashes finally lifted and the evening sun rested upon her eyes making them glitter before his eyes and he was mesmerized once again by how smitten he was by this one little human being.
"Damn you are beautiful." The words spew out of his lips before he could even stop himself and her face reddened as she could feel the sincerity in those words just by staring back at him.
God knows his words weren’t the only thing he couldn’t control. The longer he held her, the more he was finding it hard to control his desire for her. Dear God have mercy but he wanted to kiss her.
"Go inside. The birthday girl shouldn’t be absent for too long from her own party." He says and looks over her shoulder, he could see all heads gathered by the windows, all eyes staring at the two of them. She didn’t know because her back was turned to the house.
He could see her mother holding back her father. The man looked like he wanted to burst out of the house and snatched his daughter out of Alan’s hands and it made Alan laugh. He wondered how the man would react if he were to kiss Janey right that moment.
"I’ll call you." He says and takes his hand off her face. She nods with a soft smile. She turns her back to him and slowly his hands sink into his pockets as he watches everyone standing by the window scurry around so she wouldn’t see them.
She suddenly turns around again and faces him with a big smile she says, "Bye... See you next week." and turns her back to him again.
And damn it, she just had to smile so beautifully!
His hands that had sunk into his pockets reach for her and he grabs the wrist he had put a bracelet on. He spins her into his arms and everyone inside the house gasps. Even little Shelly and Renny were enjoying the show.
He pulls her close and ever so naturally her lashes as her heart raced like a warhorse as he leaned in and the lips she’d been dreaming of touched her cheek.
It was cold. Nothing like she had expected.
And the cold sent sweet shivers down her spine where one of his hand rested. Another kiss touched her forehead and her lashes lifted to meet his gaze. "Happy birthday... again." He says and finally releases her. "Bye now." He says and turns her around as she seems to have frozen to the ground. He gives her a little push and she tottles back into the house in a daze.
All the while Mrs Conroy who had a big smile on her face was holding back her husband who was breathing fire from his eyes, nose and mouth.
Alan turned his back to the house after she entered and he with a rather fulfilled heart, he walked away humming.
It was a beautiful evening.
