Chapter 147. Side Story 11: Alan’s birthday gift to Janey

Chapter 147: 147. Side Story 11: Alan’s birthday gift to Janey

After that night, they began sending simple random texts with each other. Although Janey would think for long minutes, then type and then delete what she typed, she’d do that for at least close to five times before finally sending a text.

And once he responded, the conversation would go on for minutes.

What did they talk about? Nothing serious. Just simple things like; How is your day going, have you eaten, what did you eat,? They would go on to explain each other’s day, how messy or how lovely it had been or was still going.

The calls and texts brought them a little closer, so when they saw on Sunday’s, they talked for longer than they used to. And Janey had made it an habit to bake different cookies for him and he was always expecting them, but he’d never accept them without checking her hands for any sign of being burnt. When he was certain she had kept her promise of being careful in the kitchen, then he’d accept her cookies.

More than handing him the cookies she baked, Janey was more expectant of how he’d hold her hands and check for bruises. She loved it when he did that. She loved it too much.

And just like that, time flew by, and it was already Easter Sunday and coincidentally, that day happened to be Janey’s birthday.

Since it was her big twenty, her parents were holding a small birthday party for her at their house and they invited some church members and some of her friends. Champagne and the twins were invited too.

And although Alan already knew beforehand that it was her birthday, and he also heard Champagne talking about attending the party with the twins, Janey herself had not invited him yet. In fact she had not spoken a word about it to him.

Knowing her, Alan was sure she was probably thinking too much about how to tell him personally.

After service that Sunday, she sort him out and when she found him, she realized he was also going to find her.

"Hi." She waves and he smiles.

"Hey Janey. Happy Easter." He says.

"Happy Easter." She says in turn and he could tell she had something to say to him but was over thinking again. "Uhm, so uhm—" And truthfully she was. She was wondering how he’d feel to attend her party. To be honest the people who’d be there were people he wasn’t familiar with. Only Champagne and the twins would be the familiar faces. It hadn’t been too long since he started church so she wasn’t certain if he’d gotten close to the youths of the church.

She didn’t want him to feel out of place in her party. Besides, most youths that would be attending were the ones who were in her age group, and then the adults would be her parents age group. Champagne would be the only one in his age group.

What if he attends and ends up feeling uncomfortable? She couldn’t help thinking this way.

With him she was always overthinking.

"Janey."

"Hmm?"

"Can I have your hand?" He asks.

Shes looks at her hands then looks back at him and she lifts them up in front of her and he laughs. "Just one." He says and her cheeks turn a light shade of pink as he takes one of her hand in his own and she drops the other to her side.

With his eyes moving from her their hands to her eyes and then back to her hands, he pulls a small flat black case out of his jacket pocket and when he opens it, her eyes widens.

Sitting inside the flat case was a dazzling gold bracelet with tiny brown stones all around it.

It sparkled so beautifully that she almost believed they were real diamond stones. But it couldn’t be. Why would he give her something that had real diamonds?

He took out the bracelet and places the case back into the pocket of his jacket and without saying a word, he places it around her wrist.

After smiling at it for a while as if he was entirely satisfied with his choice of gift, he stares at her eyes and nods to himself, "As I thought, brown diamonds suit you perfectly. Happy birthday Janey."

"I hope you like my gift." He says.

Janey now realized that he was aware today was her birthday and he even got her a gift.

But rewind a bit, did he just say diamonds? "D_did you say diamond? Brown diamonds? D_do you mean these are real diamonds!" She was raising her voice.

Alan looked around him at the people who were passing by and staring at them because of Janey’s voice then he turned his attention back to her. "Of course they are real diamonds, were your cookies fake?"

Janey could not understand how he’d compare ordinary cookies that didn’t even cost up to one hundred to make and diamonds that could cost over a thousand!!

"Why did you get me real diamonds?! They are expensive!!" She was asking with her eyes and mouth wide open. She was shocked beyond normal. She could never had guessed that he would get something like this.

This was definitely not the reaction Alan had pictured in his head when he was getting that gift for her. He had pictured her being extremely excited but right now she was worried about the price.

He wasn’t a CEO or anything but damn he wasn’t poor either. At least not so poor that buying a thousand more of that same bracelet would cause a dent in hiss account. He could literally buy her a million more of that and he still wouldn’t feel it.

But she probably didn’t know that did she? He wondered if he looked poor.

"Wouldn’t it be more strange if someone like me got you fake diamonds?" He asks and Janey couldn’t be more dumbfounded. "Besides, it’s not even that expensive. Brown diamonds are not as expensive as white and pink diamonds. Why am I even explaining this to you?" Alan wondered. She might go berserk if she finds out that the main body of the bracelet 18 karat gold too. He was going to go for something with 24 karat but they said it wasn’t the best for jewelry. Alan was thinking to himself. She might even return it back to him at this rate.

"Still they are just too—"

"Janey," He takes her hands and pulls her a little closer to himself, "When a person gifts you something... No, when I gift you something, the expense is not your concern. It’s rude to ask for the price of a gift." He was talking to her like he was explaining to Renny.

"Just accept it if you think it’s beautiful and say thank you Alan." it was that easy, he had no idea why she was overthinking again.

"And besides, you can just say it’s the payment for all the free cookies I’ve been receiving and plan to receive in the future." He shrugs with a smile on his face a a little shaking of his brows.

"I still don’t think the price of my cookies would be—"

"Janey, do you like it?"

"Alan, this—"

"Just tell me if you like it or not. Do you think it’s beautiful?"

She really hadn’t received something so expensive in her life. But truly, it was beautiful. She indeed liked it, but was it alright to accept something so expensive?

"Stop overthinking and just tell me sincerely."

Sincerely?

Sincerely she felt, "it’s so beautiful."

His smile broadened as she spoke those words, "So keep it. The diaminds match your eyes. That’s why I bought it in the first place."

Janey flushed. She didn’t know that was the reason behind the brown diamonds. S_so he thought about her eyes when he bought them, she couldn’t help but feel butterflies in her stomach.

"And truthful, I’m not poor Janey, so for me, it’s sincerely not expensive. I promise you. So keep it, hmm, please."

What kind of person pleads that someone keeps an expensive gift? "In exchange, bake me more cookies."

She clearly couldn’t refuse forever. How could she refuse such a well thought gift?

"Will cookies suffice?" She asks and he grins and releases her hands as he sees she’s decided to accept it.

"Well, do you have something else in mind to give me? I can’t think of anything else I want."

"How about this?" Her hands held onto his shirt and with a strong grip, she pulled her down to her level while still stretching and standing on the tip of her toes.

And when that soft plump pink lips he admired suddenly touched the side of his face, Alan felt his soul leave his body. And when she whispered, "Thank you Alan." He felt his soul return back causing a vehement vibration throughout his body.

And even after she let go of him and ran off saying, "Come to my party with Champagne and thee twins." Even after she ran away and he was no longer seeing her, he stood there, completely still.

His hand finally moved and his fingers touched where she had kissed and he now realized how hot his face was and once again he was certain, "Gio was right from the beginning... she got me good. I’ve fallen deep and hard. I don’t think I can ever come out."
