Chapter 145: 145. Side Story 9: Alan’s Call
"Momma!" Janey screamed as she marched down the stairs of their house to the living room where her mother sat in front of the television watching a soap opera while her junior brother washed the dishes in the kitchen. "There’s a crazy person on the phone trying to scam me," Janey instantly reports as she reaches her mother’s side.
"What?!" Mrs Conroy instantly lifts herself from the couch.
"The person was texting me so I tried to ignore them, but then they called, can you imagine that mom?" Janey says with her hands dramatically in the air.
"Let me at him." Mrs Conroy says, "Those jobless, worthless vagabonds who cheat people out of their money using phones are the worst!"
"Hand it to me, let me at him." She says and practically snatches the phone from Janey. "You bastard trying to scam my child, you should have made a video call instead so I could screenshot your face and post it all over the internet. I’m sure you will not be able to show your face anywhere for a while if I post your face on the internet. Get a life you good for nothing fellow! Get a real job that pays and— Hello, hello?"
"What is it momma?" Janey asks and Mrs Conroy smirks. "He ended the call, that’s good for nothing." She shrugs.
The door to their house opens and the father of the house walks in with some pop corn he had gone out to get for his dear wife, "What is going on honey? I could hear your voice all the way from the store." Mr Conroy says in his thick voice as he extends his hand to his wife, giving her the pop corn.
"Some crazy idiot is trying to scam Janey." Mrs Conroy explains as she collects the thing he’s handing to her and the man’s eyes widen at those words.
"What?! Is he still on the call? Let me at him."
"No, he ended the call. Of course he’ll end the call. They all do once you give them a good insult or two, and threaten to post them on the internet, they run away fast. Here yah go honey. He won’t be calling you again." Mrs Conroy says and hands over Janey’s phone to her.
"Thanks momma. Can’t believe he interrupted my movie and—"
*Ring*Ring*Ring*
Janey’s eyes dilated in shock as he phone rings again "Huh!! Momma! This one has guts!" She gasps,"He’s calling again momma. Video call this time!" She announces.
"What?!" Mr Conroy says in shock. Usually those scammers wouldn’t call back after they’ve been caught but this person even has the guts to make a video call. What a shameless fellow. "Give it to me." He says and collects the phone from his daughter.
"How do I look?" He asks and as the phone continues to ring.
"Menacing daddy." Janey says.
"You look like my fierce husband." His wife proudly says. And the man smiles with reassurance now over his face, the his face morphs back to a fierce look as he picks the call just before it ends.
"Alright, listen up you—"
"Daddy, why did you stop?" Janey asks as she takes some steps towards her father so she could see why he suddenly paused.
"Wait, isn’t that? Aha! I knew you were no good for my daughter! So you were just a con artist. You just—"
"Good evening Mr Conroy." His voice sounded out of the phone’s speaker and Janey’s eyes widened as her feet quickened and her head instantly popped in front of her father’s, with her big eyes staring directly into the screen.
It can’t be, can it? "Huh, Alan?!"
"Hello Janey." Her hand instantly slaps over her mouth in shock as she was now realizing what a huge mistake she had made.
"Alan?" Her mother says and pushes her head in front of the phone screen too. And to her surprise, he was really Alan, "You’re the con artist?" She asks with a gasp.
"Evening Mrs Conroy."
Instantly, Janey hit the end button and snatched her phone from her father.
"Oh no, no, no."
"I knew it. That good for nothing," Mr Conroy is saying.
"Handsome boy was bad for my daughter. He had no idea he was talking to someone he knew so he tried to con you. It’s a good thing we found out about his true nature in time. This way you can give up on him quickly."
While Mr Conroy was busy badmouthing him, Janey was busy going through their text and was starting to realize she was the one who escalated thee matter. He didn’t even ask anything so bad but she had accused him of being a scammer without...
"Oh God! Just bring me to you now. You can just take me now. Please God. Urgh!!!" She screams into her hand.
"I_ I asked for his number earlier today but I didn’t wait to see if he’d give it to me, so he must have gotten my number from Champagne so he could give me his number."
"Ohh." Her mother was shaking her head with realization but her father wasn’t still buying it.
"Why did you say he was trying to scam you then?"
"Oh, just because I don’t usually receive random texts from unknown numbers unless it’s spam. So I naturally thought it was a spam text. I_ I_ oh momma what do I do now? I just made a total fool of myself in front of him." Janey wanted to sink into the ground.
"Yes, since you made a fool of yourself in front of him, the best solution is to stay away from him. Just don’t see him again." Mr Conroy was answering. "It’s that simple." He shrugs and his wife gives him a death glare.
"Baby just sincerely explain to him that it was an honest mistake and—"
"Ahhh!!" Janey flinches and screams as her phone begins to ring again and this time she knows who is calling. "Momma, he’s calling again." She says with trembling hands.
"Do you want me to explain it to him for you?"
"N_No." Janey says and instantly turns around and runs back up the stairs, bolts into her room and climbs into bed.
She places the ringing phone beside her on the bed and just watches it ring with a troubled mind.
She didn’t know what to say. She was too embarrassed to talk. What would he think of her now? Having heard her talking like a local female gangster? Having heard her mother talking like the mother of a female gangster.
What if he thought they were a house of uncultured people? People he didn’t want to associate with. What if that was what he was calling her to say now?
The phone eventually stopped ringing and Janey just curled her knees up and rested her head and arms on them. She couldn’t just get over the embarrassment.
But then a text enters and she lifts her head. She picks up the phone and clicks on the text notification. The text page opens and her eyes scans the content of the text.
"Hey, are you upset?" He was asking in the text and as she was reading that one, another entered. "I’m sorry if I upset you." Janey was trying to understand why he was the one apologizing.
"So pick up the call Janey." He texts again and as she reads those words another text enters, "I want to hear your voice."
The ugly feeling that was overwhelming her a moment ago is quickly being overrun by a sweet heat that was rising to her chest and was moving to her face.
He wanted to hear her voice? Even after all that drama she just created?
Like a response to her question, her phone rang and Janey cleared her throat again and again, arranging her hair even though it wasn’t a video call.
"Uhm, Ah, Hello, no, no, Uhm Ahh." She clears her throat again and again and just before the phone stops ringing, she clicks on the receive button.
And she waited, waited for him to say something to her first and he did. "Hello," He said and Janey was once again aware that he was really the one on the call. Her smile was going broader and broader.
"Janey? Can you hear me?"
"Y_Yes. H_hello."
"Ah, there she is. Are you still upset with me?" He asks.
"I_I’m not upset." She shrugs. "I was just embarrassed that it was you on the line and I had said those things to you. Oh but why didn’t you just tell me it was you from the beginning of the call?" She asks.
"Well, you didn’t give me much room to speak, my dear."
M_my dear? Janey’s brain just flew out of her head because of those words.
"Y_you should have told me in the text."
"I’m sorry about that. I just wanted to tease you a little."
"Why do you always tease me?" She asks.
"I don’t know. I also wonder why."
