144. Side Story 8: Alan’s

{Earlier that morning before church}

"Your boyfriend won’t eat that! It looks like shit."

"Jonathan!! You take that back or I will punch some holes in your teeth."

"What? I’m not lying. What’s with the ugly decorations on the cookies. They look horrible. Although your cookie does tastes good, your boyfriend won’t bother trying them when he sees them."

"He is not my boyfriend and get out of here!" Janey firmly says to her brother with a threatening spoon in her hand, gesturing that she would throw it at him if he didn’t get out of the kitchen. And the boy seemed to get the message as he ran off.

However, her brother’s words were now stamped into her brain, and she could not take them out. She knew her cookies tasted great, but the reason her brother said it looked like shit was because of the chocolate toppings she used to decorate the cookies. He always called them shit. Yet he would gobble the whole thing up.

But what if like Jonathan said, Alan found her cookies unattractive and didn’t even bother tasting them? She could not start scraping the chocolate toppings off each and everyone of the cookies. She’d be late for church.

So she thought of a simple solution.

A letter.

After about six attempts, she finally ended up writing one successful short letter.

Hi, uhm, I just wanted you to know that the cookies might look a little bad but trust me they taste really good. At least everyone says so. So please don’t throw them out because of how they look. I hope you try them first.

And by the way, just in case you don’t know, the dark brown thing on the cookies is just chocolate.

Thank you. Bye.

...

{Back to present time}

Patiently, Alan waited for Champagne to send him the phone number.

Well, not so patiently, he was just trying his best not to call her and demand for the number again so he waited while checking his phone almost every minute waiting and hoping he would receive a message anytime soon.

He’d eaten all the yogurt, even the one he kept in his refrigerator while waiting for her message.

Time and time again he would pick up the cellophane bag of cookies and just stare at them with a smile on his face, then when he remembered the cookies was the reason she got burnt, he’d dump them back on the table.

But then his eyes would move to the small blue piece of paper where she technically begged him to eat the cookies she made and his heart would soften. Then he would think of her and remember again that Champagne was yet to send the number.

At first it was definitely curiousity... Alright, maybe he was just denying it from the very beginning. But after meeting her again and again,, after his curiosity pushed him to that church again even though he told himself he wouldn’t go, Alan had sat himself down and thought about it himself.

When he realized that he didn’t even have to want to think about her for his mind to replay images of her in his head, when he realized that seeing dried leaves on a tree reminded him of her hair, and little brown squirrels made him think of her eyes...

When he realized he couldn’t even call his dear niece or nephew cute any longer because even that word made him think of her. When he found himself listening more intently to Mary and Champagne talking about church stuff just to hear if they’d say anything about the little lady called Janey.

When he realized all this, Alan finally accepted it.

Ah, my preference in women must have changed.

And once he accepted that fact, he decided to pursue it. Slowly, he was going to pursue her slowly. She was young, innocent and sweet, a good Christian girl and God have mercy on him, he wanted to touch that sweetness. He wanted to taste it.

All of it.

He wasn’t denying that any longer.

He was interested in Janey Conroy. Romantically interested.

It wasn’t until past seven in the evening did his phone beep and a smile wove its way to his lips as he picked it up and saw the text.

I’m so sorry Alan, I totally forgot. Here’s Janey’s number, 010*********

Instantly, Alan copied the number and saved it.

Then he was plagued with what to do. Call her or text her.

He thought about that for about one more hour after which he decided on texting her.

"What if she’s asleep?" He wondered then tossed the thought to the back of his head and just texted her. Hey...

Restlessly, Alan waited for a response, but thirty minutes later there was nothing. It was clear that his message had been delivered. It even showed that she read it, but she wasn’t answering. Why?

"Could she really be asleep by this time?" He wondered.

Are you there? He texts again. Again, it showed the message was delivered and seen. So he was sure this time she would send him a response but what did he know, ten minutes later he was still the only one texting.

"Is she busy with something?" He wondered to himself.

"Why won’t you respond, are you busy?"

"Who is this? Why do you keep texting me? You didn’t even tell me who you are, you just kept texting and expecting me to respond."

He burst into laughter as he read her text. He hadn’t realized he didn’t make it known that he was the one texting. Her response was quite interesting though. Now he wanted to tease her.

"My bad. I’m sorry, I should have introduced myself earlier

But at least you finally responded. What are you doing now?"

"Look here Mister, or Mrs, you’re really getting in my nerves. I’m not buying anything, and I’m not giving you my bank details either! So get off my phone now or I swear I’ll forward your number to my dad. He knows a lot of cops."

Alan feared that his bones might rupture with the way he was laughing. So she had such a fiery side to her too. He didn’t realize.

Now he wanted to see how she’d react if the number that’s been texting her irritatingly, calls her.

...

Janey on the other hand just finished having dinner with her family and was in her room watching a movie on her phone. The texts notifications kept popping up and disturbing her peaceful time. She was too lazy to go through the process of simply blocking the number so she thought she’d ignore it but then he kept texting so she replied and now...

"Urghhh!!" She held her hair in her hands like she was about to really lose her mind as a call came into her phone, disrupting her movie and the number on the screen was that of the fellow who’d been texting her.

"That’s it!" She yells as she picks up the call. "You don’t tell me who you are because you’re just a con artist trying to rub me of my little earthly possessions," Climbing down from her bed and matching out of her room in annoyance, Janey yelled louder the longer she remained on the call, not even giving the person on the other side a chance to say a word.

"But you know what Mr or Mrs, you’ve messed with the wrong person tonight. Why don’t you get a life huh? How old are you?" Usually she would give her mom the phone to handle these kinds of spam calls, tonight wasn’t going to be different.

"Can’t you find a legit job to do to make money rather than trying to scam people out of what they worked for?! Do you think you will make heaven doing this? You have hands to pick up a phone and try and scam a person, why can’t yoh use those same hands to work!"

At first Alan had tried to speak up but seeing that she wasn’t giving him a chance, he had reserved his words and was just listening and truth be told, he was enjoying listening to her more than anything now. He’d only heard her talking delicately whenever she was speaking with him. She was always too shy to even make herself very audible.

Even the times she would raise her voice from being surprised she’d quickly return back to that calm babyish voice.

But right now it was an entirely different voice. A voice that sounded like a no nonsense mother of four boys and was scolding all of them together.

And he was enjoying listening to every word that she spewed. He loved the cute voice she always used in front of him, but this was something new. Something he really didn’t expect. The fact that he was liking the aggressiveness in the tone of her voice made him realize once again that he had really fallen for her.
