Chapter 137: 137. Side story 1: Alan’s admirer (Third person POV)

After Alan announced Duke’s presence in the church to Champagne and she ran off leaving the twins and Alan in the children’s church to pack up their stuff, Janey could not just take her eyes off the blond man whose name she finally knew now.

"Uh_Uhm, w_will you be taking Champagne’s things with you?" She did not know what else to say. She wanted to talk to him but was too shy to. She couldn’t even say a complete sentence without stuttering and blushing.

Alan’s gaze moved from the twins who were returning their coloring tools back into the right boxes, to the young lady with short rusty brown hair blushing in front of him.

The brown freckles on her cheek matched the shade of her hair. They were an equal proportion on both sides of her face. Just beneath her eyes. Almost like someone took a thin brush and put ten dots of brown ink underneath her eyes... equally.

Her eyes were big and brown too. Her cheeks were flushed, round and plump. Her lips were pink and small.

She was the exact definition of petite. Very small and round thing. Not too slender, not too fat. Just right.

Cute... Was the only thing Alan could think to describe the young lady with. Like a cute chubby little baby bear. A brown baby bear.

They’d only just met yet he could tell that she was starting to harbor a crush for him. She wasn’t doing much to hide that in fact. And although usually such attention would vex him to a great extent, for some reason, he wasn’t vexed. Not even in the slightest.

Rather he really found her cute. Like a little thing he wanted to pet.

"What did she bring with her?" Alan asked with a soft smile and he hadn’t expected that her face could become any redder but it did and it intrigued him greatly. She was just so cute, this little thing.

"Uhm, s_she br_b_brought her hand_ handbag. I think that is all." She turns away from him and scurries around looking for what Alan was certain was Champagne’s hand bag. He could see it clearly sitting on the desk in front of her but she’s so flustered that she can’t see it. Her actions draw a soft laugh from him as he watches her trembling, making a complete mess of herself in front of him as she stands with her back turned to him scanning the place with her eyes trying to find a bag that was right in front of her.

Something about her made him want to tease her.

"Is that?" He leans close to her, and picks the bag from the table in front of her and the closeness causes her entire body to vibrate. She jerks and screams instantly placing both her hands over her mouth as she turns around and faces him.

"Y_y_yes. That is Champagne’s bag." She nods and staggers backwards.

"Ohhh, Sister Janey, is that your boyfriend?" Someone says and just when Alan thought her face definitely couldn’t turn redder, she turns into a living ripe tomato.

"N_No!!" She screams and runs past him. "He’s Champagne’s brother-in-law. He came to pick them up. Come Maggie, your mom is here to pick you up." She takes the kid called Maggie to the woman who made the remark about Alan being her boyfriend.

"Ah, I see. So it’s Sister Champagne you’re related to." She smiles at Alan and he just stares at her with a blank face.

"Here I thought you brought your boyfriend with you to church." She teases Janey.

"Don’t forget, having a boyfriend is fine, just make sure you don’t do anything naughty now." She winks at Janey before picking up her daughter, waving at Alan and walking away.

Janey remains standing, facing the door, trying to calm her racing heart before she turns around to face him.

However, by the time she finally gets the courage to turn around, the twins are ready to go and Alan with Champagne’s bag in his hand is leading them out.

"Bye Janey." Shelly and Renny both say as they reach where she’s standing.

"B_bye. See you next week." She says.

"See you next week." They repeat her words as they match past her and walk out the door with Alan following behind them.

As he reaches her side, the world seems to pause for a moment as their eyes remain locked on each other at such close distance. Janey could hear her heart beating faster and faster and faster. Louder and louder it sounded to the point that it was the only thing she could hear.

Until... "It was nice meeting you." His voice broke through the loudness of her beating heart. Calm, low, perfectly tuned to suit her racing heart.

And as he walked past her, it was like her entire body, heart head and physical body were in complete sync for once and her heart told her to do it, her brain told her it would be alright. Her body moved and her lips parted, "S_see you next week." She said those words with so much faith in her heart, like a prayer to God and the man whose back was now turned to her.

And when he looked over his shoulder, bright blue eyes stared straight at her and a soft smile formed on his lips as he said, "Bye Janey."

He said good bye to her... He didn’t assure her that he would see her next week like the twins did... all he said was a goodbye.

But Janey’s heart was afire and the joy she felt could not in any way be contained.

...

"What is taking them so long?" Alan grumbled as they waited for Duke and Champagne to come out of the pastor’s office.

"Bye again Janey!" He suddenly hears Renny say and his head almost instantaneously turns to the direction the girl is looking and that little round bear is walking past them, waving at the twins whose heads were sticking out of the car.

She’s walking alongside a slender boy with hair as brown as hers, and a woman who looks to be in her forties. Alan could instantly tell that the woman was the mother of Janey. It was clear who Janey got those freckles on her cheeks from.

Her gaze locks with his and a shy smile coils over her lips and she turns her head away from him.

Alan watched as she walked away until her and her yellow dress faded from view.

"I see someone caught your eye." Gio says and Alan scoffs. "She’s a pretty one too."

"And she’s illegal too." Alan says and turns his head back towards the church building.

"Oh, you asked her age already?"

"No Gio, it’s obvious. She doesn’t look a day older than seventeen. She’s a kid." He says.

"Ah, that means if she were legal you would have gone for it."

"Wha—" Alan just shakes his head. "I’m not into cute girls." He simply says with a roll of his eyes.

"When a man thinks a woman is cute, trust me he’s already fallen hard."

Alan wanted to counter those words but just decided there was no point in wasting his breath. Because anyone in their right mind would know that the girl was actually cute. It did not mean anything special that he thought that way too.

"What’s taking them so long? Tsk." He clicked his tongue as at that moment, Duke emerged with Champagne.

"Daddy! You really came! You came to church!!" Renny and Shelly were saying happily as they saw their father.

"Yes, baby. I thought it was high time I made up with Jesus." He said and Champagne smack his shoulder.

"Alan, take the kids with Champagne’s car. I’ll take yours."

"What? Why? Why do you always take my car?" Alan protests.

"Daddy aren’t you taking us home?" Shelly asks.

"No buddy, your mummy and I have some things to do and some places to be." He says and both Renny and Shelly’s expression becomes glum.

"I thought we’d be going home togwether with you." Renny murmurs.

"Dont worry sugar, your dear uncle Alan promised to buy one big bowl of ice-cream for each of you." Duke announces.

"Really?!" Shelly beams and so does Renny.

"Yeah Duke, Really?" Alan stares at him and Duke nods.

"Yeah, really."

"YAY! Let’s go. Uncle Alan is my favorite uncle in the whole world." Renny is saying and Alan scoffs with a little blush on his cheeks.

"I wonder who you take after to have such a sweet tongue. It must be your grandma." Alan says as he takes the keys to Champagne’s car from Duke.

"Alright! Let’s go get some ice-cream!!" Alan announces as Gio gets into the front seat and Alan walks over to the driver’s seat.

"Uhm Champagne," He calls as his hand touches the door handle.

"Yes?"

’How old is Janey?’ was the question he wanted to ask but then, "Never mind." He says and opens the car door. "You both better return on time." Were the last words he said before entering the car as he rode off to get ice cream with the kids while telling himself in his head, ’She’s just a kid. She’s just a kid.’

But then, "Her freckles were lovely."
