Contract Marriage starring Love and Revenge -
Chapter 117. Happy that you’re happy.
Chapter 117: 117. Happy that you’re happy.
"Hello, ma’am,"
"Yes, Stella?"
"There’s an Attorney George Languine here to see you."
Just as I had expected. He came.
"Send him in." I say and place the phone back on the receiver.
I knew he would come. I was confident he would, but after waiting for him over the past days, my confidence was starting to dwindle. I was starting to wonder if it would be better if I reached out to him one more time, but I’m glad I remained patient because he’s here now.
"Attorney Languine," I take off my glasses as he makes his way towards me. "To what do I owe this afternoon visit?" I ask with a practiced smile.
"Please, have a seat." I say and he sits himself on one of the chairs in front of my desk.
"Would you like a cup of coffee?" I ask as the hospitable host I am.
"No, thank you." He finally speaks. "I didn’t come for coffee." He clearly isn’t here to chit-chat either.
"Then tell me attorney, why have you come to see me?" I bluntly ask.
"Champagne, what I did to you was wrong, and although a big part of me doesn’t regret my choice, a small part of me can’t let me sleep in peace."
"What are you trying to say, attorney?"
"I’m saying I will provide you with the original will of Robert Aaron Gold and I am willing to testify against Evelyn Gold in court when you need me."
That part of the Bible that says he will go before me and make the crooked ways straight, this is what he was talking about, right? Because the path to my revenge that seemed rather crooked is clearing up and becoming rather straight and soon, I will be there.
Just a little longer. I will have back all that is mine.
...
"Guess what." I say to Duke. As soon as Languine walked out of my office, I picked up my phone and called him.
"Uhh, sales of Hola chocolate skyrocketed?"
"Well, with the adverts and the exposure being created in schools, sales are going higher and higher daily. But no, that’s not why I called."
"Uhm, Let me see, you uhh— you landed another investment deal?"
"No,"
"Pagne, just tell me. The only thing I can think of right now is maybe Languine already reached out to you or your dumb cousin—"
"That’s it!"
"What? Languine or your cousin?"
"Languine, you clown," I chuckle.
"He reached out to you?" He asks.
"Yes. He just left my office about three minutes ago. He said he was ready to testify against Aunt Evelyn and that he’d provide me with the original Will."
"Well, took him long enough. Congratulations dearest, you’re one step away from making your aunt pay for everything she’s done to you, how do you feel right now?"
"Uhm..." I lean back on my seat and rest my head, calmly looking up at the ceiling as I twirl side to side in my chair.
"I feel fine." I say. "I feel grateful to God for placing people who served as pillars in my life to hold me up when I crumbled to the ground. I feel grateful that I have these people in my life as I fight against those who want nothing but to see me cry. I feel happy that soon, it’ll all be over and I’d get to focus all my attention on these special people."
My new family... Duke, the twins, Emily and Fredrick, Alan and even Rey, even Stella... I’m glad God used these people to show me that no matter how bad the world is, there are still good people in it.
"Pagne," He calls me.
"Hm?"
"I’m just happy that you’re happy."
"It’s all thanks to you Duke. I wouldn’t have been able to laugh so easily had I not met you. You’re the biggest and greatest present I have ever received." I will forever be grateful for this man.
"Thank you Duke." I will forever be grateful to God for him and I will never get tired of saying how grateful I am.
"And I love you, bye, see you at home." I instantly end the call before he can say anything further.
This shouldn’t be right! Why do I still feel this way around him?! Why do I still get shy when we talk? We are a married couple for goodness sake. I’ve been married before and it was nothing like this!!
This isn’t normal.
...
I decided to go home early today, so I can surprise the kids and also make dinner for everyone. Emily and Frederick are coming over today too.
I’ve never had a chance to host them properly as Duke’s wife. I want to do well today. I know they are not the type of people who care so much about being pleased, but still... They are Duke’s parents and the twin’s grandparents. They also treat me so nice. I want to try and please them. I want to impress them.
So here I am shopping for fresh groceries. I’m going to make a sumptuous dinner tonight, just you wait.
After paying for my stuff, I make my way to my car parked outside...
"What the—" I say as I walk around the car, "How did this happen? They were fine earlier." I complain as I realize that the back tires of my car have flattened.
"Ah, seriously when I thought everything was going smoothly, this had to happen!" I kick the tyre only to regret it instantly.
"What do I do now? Should I call Duke to come pick me up?" I wonder, but that would ruin the entire surprise though. I’ll just take a taxi.
However something in me is telling me to just call Duke to come pick me... I can almost hear a voice whispering to me saying, ’Call Duke.’
But I choose to ignore it.
"Ugh—" I grumble. I’ll have to tow the car and waiting for the towing truck will waste time! I need to get home early.
So I go to the security at the supermarket and explain ask him for a favor, and at first he seemed hesitant to help me look after the car till the tow truck came, but with a little tip squeezed into his palm, he was beaming and readily agreed to even have it delivered back to me after it was fixed.
After successfully leaving the car in the care of the security guard and exchanging numbers with him, I carry my stuff from the car and walk down to the road.
Thankfully there’s a taxi coming. I stop it and jump in with my groceries and all.
"Geez, the things I do to surprise my husband and kids." I mutter to myself as I stare at the bags of groceries and wipe the beads of sweat rolling down my body.
"Please head to—" I don’t know what makes me pause as I lift my eyes and I’m staring at the back of the head of my taxi driver. Something about th_that back view seems familiar.
I tilt my head and even the way his ears curve at the tip seems familiar. He’s wearing a black nose mask but still, even the side of his face looks familiar.
I look up at the rear-view mirror and our eyes meet and I flinch.
I_It can’t be right? I must be overthinking things, right? Th_that can’t be who I think it is.
I’m just being paranoid. Please tell me I’m just being anxious for nothing.
People can have the same shape of head, the same shape of eyes, even the same slightly abnormal curve at the tip of their ears, right?
It can be—
"R_" I hold my tongue in my mouth as I try to tell myself once more that I must be wrong. I have to be wrong. But then, am I? "Rowan?"
Slowly, he lifts his eyes to the mirror and his left hand moves from the wheel to his face. He pulls down the mask and slowly turns his head away from the road and is looking at me with a big creepy grin gradually climbing up to his face and I can feel chills starting from the tip of my toes, reaching my knees, going up to my chest and then up to my head.
"Chammy my love... see, I knew you still love me. How else were you able to recognize me by just looking at the back of my head?" Oh Dear God, It’s really him. "Don’t worry about anything anymore. I’m here now," he stares back at the road before him. "I’ll take you away from the clutches of that bastard that seduced you." Oh God, I shouldn’t have ignored the voice in my head telling me to call Duke. I should have called him to come and pick me up instead of taking a taxi. "I’ll save you."
I can feel the hairs on my body rise along with goosebumps and a sudden kind of heat mixes with the cold I feel deep in my bones as I stare back at him with my mouth open and my eyes dilating. My pulse quickening and in my head I’m praying...
Dear God, I hope you give me the strength to escape this new trial.
