Conquering His Cold Heart
Chapter 468 - 468: Errand Boy

'The more days I stay quiet out of fear for my life, the more days Ruby will have to spend in that cold cell of the dungeon!' Cillian screamed at himself in his head.

He was trying to talk himself into being brave and speaking to the Alpha.

'Get a hold of yourself, damn it!'

He tried to compose himself and gather his thoughts so that he could say something. Anything. But his mind suddenly went blank when he lifted his head and looked at the overbearing man standing by his side.

Cillian instantly looked down. His eyes fell on the warm blanket that he currently had over his legs, and then on the soft mattress that he was using.

His mind took him back to the dungeon where there was nothing except a cold stone floor for the bed.

He felt even guiltier because while he was enjoying the hospitality at the castle, Ruby was being treated like a criminal.

'No. This isn't how things are supposed to be!' Cillian clutched the blanket with determination. 'I should make things right. Right now.'

However, before he could speak, the silence in the room was suddenly broken by Everard. "Cillian, if you have completely healed then I am–"

"I will pay you back for your hospitality by working for you," Cillian restlessly blurted out thinking that he was about to be kicked out of the castle.

All the determination that he had gradually built up in his heart went out of the window.

Everard only wanted to say that he was glad that Cillian had recovered when the latter abruptly cut him off. Also, he was already thinking of offering a job to Cillian even though he didn't ask. Jerome had already briefed him about Cillian's situation.

So, when Cillian expressed his desire to work, Everard just smiled and said, "There's no need to hurry. Rest for a few more days. We can talk about jobs later on."

Cillian immediately let out an awkward chuckle because Everard was being so nice to him. It made it harder for him to shatter the Alpha's trust and confess his crimes.

And instead of sharing Ruby's whereabouts, he ended up saying, "I think I have rested enough, Alpha. If there's any job available then I would like to work starting tomorrow."

Everard looked at Jerome as if to ask if it was okay to let Cillian engage himself in some work.

Jerome cleared his throat and came forward to speak with Cillian. "Fine. If you feel up to it then I can assign some work to you."

Since this was the first time Cillian was opening up after the accident, Jerome took the chance to ask, "Is there any specific job that's in your mind? Anything that you are good at?"

Cillian hadn't given much thought about the type of job that he wanted to do. He had simply thought that he would do whatever they asked him to do. After all, his goal was to stay in the castle just so he could meet Everard. But now that he was given the choice, he lightly touched his chin and thought for a while.

He had been nothing more than a simple errand boy during his stay in the Atkinson Mansion. Now that he thought about it, he liked sparring with Slayer. He had even entertained the idea of following in his teacher's footsteps and becoming a skilled fighter.

'Can I ask them to train me for now so that I can become a fighter later on?' he wondered.

But then again, he wasn't sure if he would even be alive to see another day when Everard would know about the role that he played in Ruby's imprisonment.

'What the hell is wrong with me? This is not time for me to think about all that!' he exclaimed in his head.

He didn't need to go into all the trouble of getting a job if he confessed to Everard right here and now.

However, since things were already heading that way, he nervously gulped and answered Jerome in a low voice, "I um… I don't really have any specific skill set. Maybe I can work as an errand boy?"

Jerome didn't think much and agreed. "Sure. I will discuss this with the others and see where I can place you. I will give you further details tomorrow."

Cillian obediently nodded.

"Alright. Rest for now." Everard took one last glance at Cillian before turning around in relief. He was just happy that he hadn't accidentally killed someone.

Seeing the King leaving so soon, Cillian stretched his arms to stop him. He wanted to bring up the topic of Ruby even if it meant that he would get punished or lose his life. That was why he had been asking for the King ever since he regained consciousness.

However, before he could utter a word, Jerome had already closed the door behind him, leaving Cillian alone in the room.

"No…" Cillian covered his eyes with his palm and instantly regretted not sharing Ruby's location before rambling on about working.

He grunted and scolded himself while grabbing his hair with both of his hands, 'Why the hell was I so scared? What if Regulus causes some irreparable harm to Ruby while you are enjoying nice food and bed? Don't be such a wuss, damn it!'

He suddenly looked at the door with a determined look on his face. 'Maybe I can still catch up to the Alpha if I run.'

With that thought in mind, he dashed out of his room. Everard and Jerome had already disappeared from the view. Still, he was able to guess the direction that Everard had taken by sniffing a few times. And he ran as fast as he could with the hope of catching up to Everard.

When he was about to turn around the corner though, he was suddenly stopped by two patrolling guards.

"You can't come here," one of the guards informed Cillian.

Cillian looked past them and said quite restlessly, "I will only be a moment. Please."

The guards were aware that Cillian was new to the castle. So, one of them kindly let him know, "Beyond this is the King's private space. Only the authorized people can go beyond this point."

Cillian gave a pleading look to the guards and requested again, "I need to talk with the Alpha. Please. It's very important."

However, the guards did not relent to his request.

"We are sorry but you will have to take an appointment if you want to talk to him. He is a busy man," one of them said while asserting dominance.

The other guard stepped forward, blocking Cillian from stretching his neck and looking at the corridor. He didn't want to continue the bickering. They had jobs to do.

So, he looked Cillian in the eyes and asked rather sternly, "Please go back to your room or else we will have to escort you back."

Cillian felt the hostile aura that the guards were starting to give off and finally backed down. He didn't want to create a scene and cause another trouble. That was definitely not a way to attract the Alpha's attention to him.

"I apologize for obstructing your duties." He politely bowed to the guards and finally turned around, disheartened.

He then slowly began to walk back to his room, hoping that he would come across another opportunity to talk with Everard.

'I shouldn't miss my chance if I ever get to talk with him again,' he thought.

He then fisted over his heart and vowed to himself, 'Ruby, I promise I will get you out of that Hell soon, even if it costs me my life.'
